Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
He got me again... This time it was the "better stock up on red crankbaits for early spring" being whispered, and then shouted into my ear. 6th Sense Flat 75 and Curve 55, LC 1.5 and Wiggle Wart to name a few. Now that I have them I'm curious if there's a certain water temp that they excel in? *I'm in PA where it's 50 one day and 15 the next, but we currently have open water!

That's a steal! Paid $109 for mine and it's been worth every penny. Use it primarily as a pitching stick for anything 1/2 - 1oz range.

Favorite Polarized Sunglasses?
For $60 Eye Surrender ESE work well for me. Grey for general purpose and I like the copper lense for sight fishing. Mine came in a hardshell case and if you break them they replace them for $20 S&H fee. ***Note that I have never paid more than $100 for sunglasses, so I'm not trying to say these are the best available. But, IMO these are much better than any budget eye wear I've ever used.

Just took mine out for the first time on Saturday. Fun little rod. Not sure what you were planning to use it for, but you won't not like it.

What has helped you improve the most as an angler?
YouTube is a good resource, but nothing beats time on the water.

Reel Pairing
Maybe it's "Limber" like, "The rod has good backbone but the tip is nice and limber." But seriously... I'm very biased to Shimano so chose what fits your budget in their line up and that's what gets my vote.

Spinning Reel Suggestions
Thanks @Randy Price I picked up a Sedona during one of the TW sales and I'm pleased with it. My fault I forgot to post that I had made a purchase but I appreciate the input!

The one lure fisherman
I remember times when my dad would take me to the local sportsman's club lake. They stocked it with trout, and a lot of them. The guys to our left would be catching fish. Same with the folks on our right. We wouldn't get a bite. So, we would ask what they were using? We'd go buy the same bait, but have similar results the next time out. What we failed to ask was how they were presenting the bait. There are endless lure options and combinations, but knowing where, when and how to present them all is a near impossible task. Frank's success is no surprise as it sounds like he mastered the plastic worm. Confidence, knowledge/experience and skill with such a versatile lure can absolutely produce consistent results. As for myself, I'm too far down the rabbit hole to keep it that basic. But, I do make an effort to try and learn something about each lure I use and presentation I make every time I'm on the water.

Rods and the lure weight ratings
Came across this as I just put together my first A-rig. I'm throwing it on a rod that's "Heavy" rated up to 1-1/2oz. In all, the rig weight about 2oz. I'm really interested to see how this goes, and ready to assume full responsibility. I'm guessing it will be ok (or I wouldn't try it) as long as I don't try and load it up and sling it like a crank bait ?

X2. It's still free, but you have to work for it lol. Doesn't automatically populate as a line item like the sticker. Could be wrong but I think you can upgrade to long sleeves for $5.

I had them in and out of my cart for a while, then when my local gander closed they were 70% off and I snatched them up. But, I agree and would gladly pay full price. They're deadly.

Wait until you catch one that's shorter than the worm. Then your head will really spin!! Got to go out Saturday to a small farm pond that has a creek running through it. It's my only hope when everything else is ice. Anyway, long story short I tore them up on a 5/16 oz War Eagle finesse spinnerbait and a Fat Albert. Not sure what happened after that, but apparently I have an SLX XT and a Dobyns 703C on the way....?

Line for Texas Rigs and Jigs
50# on casting gear for me. Strong enough that I can get away with froggin it, but it also ties well to a variety of leader sizes 12-20# mono and fluoro.

Dick's Sporting Goods what are they thinking
X2. We just lost Gander, and it looks like DSG isn't far behind. Certainly not my first choice when buying tackle and gear but if I needed something in a pinch I could find something that would make due until my online order arrived. The closest Field and Stream seemed to be taking all the DSG inventory and it is also now a Sportsman's Warehouse, although the only change was the sign on the building. Either way I have to make arrangements to get there, or Cabela's. 90% of my purchases are from TW, but sometimes I just like to see something/have it in hand before buying. Maybe that's just me.

YUM Flash Mob Jr.
I'm about 3 years late to the party, but I'm looking at the flash mob jr. as my first rig. Curious, is a specialized rod really necessary? I'm considering using my frog rod while I'm getting a feel for the lure. 7'4 H rated to 1-1/2 oz. I've got 50# braid on it. Probably go with 1/8oz heads. Anyone think this is unreasonable?

Heavyweight Thermals
UA cold gear base crew is solid. I prefer the 2.0, but they offer 3.0 and 4.0 based on temperature and activity level. Easy to layer, but not as snug as some of their compression fit stuff.
-
Black crankbaits
I throw the 6th Sense when the fish move up early with stained water. Gives them something different to look at when most people on my local lake are throwing bladed jigs. Offers a faint rattle and decent stock hardware.

Single tail or double tail Curly Grubs
What size double tail does everyone prefer as a jig trailer? 5" sounds giant to me, but it seems like 4-5" is a pretty standard size.

Hook Bonnets
I would reach out to Owner and see if they can do anything for a bulk order.

Jig Fishing Questions
If I were a fish, I'd eat that ?. I have a couple of Mike's minis and mudbugs. Got the baby bug and Ned bug for them. Thanks for the suggestions!

Jig Fishing Questions
Isn't that the truth. I keep it pretty simple when it comes to jigs... Rage bugs or beavers 90% of the time depending on how much action I want. The other 10% are various craws. Pretty limited experience with finesse jigs. I've typically thrown a double tail grub, but now that I have about a dozen of them I want to start to experiment.

Jig Fishing Questions
My buddy got me a pile of the Z-Man Crosseyez Finesse jigs for Christmas in 1/4 and 3/8oz. It looks like both sizes have about a 2/0 hook. Looking for trailer suggestions for compact jigs... Twin tail grub size? Smaller craw/beaver options? Thanks, and Happy New Year!
