  1. get yourself a GLASS rod!!. You'll never regret it. I have a ST Croix Mojo Bass Glass rod in medium that launches 1/4oz baits. Just make sure you have a good reel that can throw lighter baits without backlashing all over
  2. Id personally never buy anything with his name on it just for the fact that he seems to think he is Gods gift to mankind. The guy has a serious ego problem and wants everyone to look at and admire him. The rods may be fine, but its a big no for me
  3. agreed. This is great mono that can take a beating. Id personally step up to Seaguar AbrazX fluorocarbon though...but the mono is so much cheaper. If you can only afford the Mono right now then a spool of Sufix Siege will do you right.
  4. It would be for lake fishing only. Ill look into the Ascend Thanks for all the replies. Ill keep an eye out on craigslist for a good used one
  5. I have the old Mojo Bass in SCll and have absolute faith in it. Its a very good rod...why do you say this about the SCll blanks?
  6. Its an inshore/ocean rod so a ML in that series would be like a MH or even a heavy in a normal bass rod. The MH/extra fast model was very stiff..too stiff for swimming baits. I went ahead and bought the 7'11 ML fast model, I couldn't resist, its so dang nice looking/feeling. I can tell this thing is going to fling 2-4oz baits a mile.
  7. I have a reel spooled with Seaguar invisX 12lb for crankbaits. The stuff is excellent. Its not too pricey either
  8. Im thinking of getting a fishing kayak but am a complete newbie when it comes to this. Id like one that I can stand up in every now and then and make some casts. Any recommendations that will keep me under a grand? Preferably under $800?
  9. Sports Chalet is going out of business and everything is 20% off. The fishing section is almost completely cleaned out already. But the location by me has a couple Phenix M1 Inshore models that look and feel extremely nice. I was thinking of picking up the 7'11 ML fast model for swimbaits in 1.5-3oz and heavy swim jigs. Its rated for 1-3oz and feels like the tip is more like a moderate fast. They also have the 7'3" MH ex fast rated for 2-6oz but being ex fast I think its too stiff for treble hook lures Anyway Im wondering if it would be unwise to let this deal slip by (its not a super deal but 20% is still 20%. Its normally $189)
  10. Yes the Avid X is basically the same price but you get better guides. I would have bought the Avid X over the E6X but they dont have a model like the swimbait model of the E6X I was looking for. I wanted something in a heavy power but moderate/fast tip for swimbaits up to 3oz and the Avid doesn't have one. I would bet though that their 7'4" heavy/fast would do it even though its not rated that high on the lure weight.
  11. Lots of good reels in this category: 7:1:1 would be good. Lews tournament MB Lews BB1 Pro Abu Garcia Revo models Daiwa Tatula Okuma Helios
  12. I use Suffix mono. I like the Suffix siege. Use any kind you like. Don't let anyone tell you that you shouldn't use mono. I don't know about black, Ive never seen it. I fish clear waters so I like the lowest vis possible
  13. I bought some and I seriously can't tell any bit of difference. I think its just a gimmick but as you can see some people swear by it but not me.
  14. I just got one and fished it today. I got the 7'4" Heavy Mod'fast swimbait rod and I absolutely love it. Its fantastic for small/medium swimbaits. Its rated 1/2-2oz but I was throwing a 3 oz swimbait on it just fine. I was also throwing a 1oz Picasso shock blade (bladed swim jig) and could feel everything with it. Very light and very sensitive. People complain that they used Fuji Aluminum Oxide guides instead of a higher grade like Alconite but the fuji aluminum oxide guides are fine. Now having said this, I also picked up a Powell 3D Max 7'5" MH moderate/fast rod and I might even like this rod better than the E6X. I am extremely impressed with the Powell rod. Its $160 vs $200 for the E6X and the Powell has upgraded Fuji Alconite Guides but the only downfall is that they are made in China but you would never know by the quality. I have several other rods and the E6X and Powell 3D are going to easily be my two favorites. I own some of the ***, St Croix Mojo Bass and Okuma which are all great rods, but the E6X and Powell 3D blow them away. I may sell all my rods and buy all Powell 3D Max and or Loomis E6X
  15. The FG is a pain to tie until you get the hang of it. I can see how guys wouldn't want to try it while out on a kayak. I tie it at home before I go out in the boat, but Im able to tie it while on the boat now doing it the way shown in the video. I used to only use the Alberto knot (shown above in video) but I like to tie long leaders that roll up into my reel and the FG is thinner and goes through everything cleaner. The Alberto still goes through the line guide on reel but not as good as the FG
  16. St Croix Avid X are amazing rods, Im sure you'll be happy, but 3/16oz is pretty light and might be hard to cast. 3/16 is lighter than 1/4 which is their lightest rated, but Im sure that 7' medium fast would be able to cast it (3/16 is only 1/16th lighter than 1/4 so its pretty dang close). Just let off spool tension and turn up the breaks. You won't get super distance but it is what it is with light weights and casting rods
  17. The FG knot is going to be the strongest and also the smallest profile knot you can tie. It feeds through micro guides as well as the level wind into your reel. The others mentioned are also good but not as good as the FG Knot. Here is a good video on the easiest way to tie it:
  18. Mike Iaconelli is one of the worst when it comes to this. Its all about greed first and foremost. These types of guys will do absolutely anything for a buck
  19. Does anyone know if Abu Garcia discontinued the Revo Toro Winch? I don't see it listed on their site anywhere.
  20. Nick S is right. They are very different. Ive had them both in hand and Id be able to tell immediately which one is which blindfolded. (maybe just because of the Winch's longer handle and bigger EVA knobs..but I wouldnt be able to tell a .4oz weight difference at all) The Lews BB1 Pro does not have a duel braking system like the Revo Winch. They both feel like very well made quality reels and are priced the same and both come in a 5:X gear ratio for cranking which is why I can't decide on which one
  21. If you want to spend a little more money than the guide select then look at the Phenix M1 swimbait Rod. Phenix makes some awesome rods.
  22. St Croix Mojo Bass Glass $130. Excellent cranking rods. The 7'4" "crankster" model is the one Id get
  23. I already have the rods just can't decide on the reel, thanks
  24. The Okuma GS IS a tried and true swimbait rod. I honestly don't see anyone finding a better rod for $110. They are stout, look great, comfortable/durable split grip handles and come with Fuji reel seats and Fuji Alconite K series guides.. This is seriously a great swimbait rod. People call it a "beginner swimbait rod", but that just makes it seem weak or not very well built. I consider it a "pro" swimbait rod. You absolutely can not go wrong with one.
