Maryland's Who's who!
Not sure about that far down river but up here in Washington County there are a lot of good spots. Actually some of the best spots you cannot get to in a boat. Try fishing baitfish colored flukes below any dam you can find. Allen

Question For Jig Makers...
While it will eventually rust if you strip the coating the green frame hanging wire from Wal-Mart does work and is cheap. I use it on my 5/16oz finish jigs that never last long enough to rust ( I lose like 75 every year0. Allen

Tacklemaking On A Budget?
I don't think I have ever seen a wooden lipless bait? Topwaters should be easier but I have never made one. Ballast is the weight you add to the belly of a crankbait to keep it running straight. Not adding ballast will make the bait run on its side or roll during the retrieve. Allen

Wooden Cranks
Like others have mentioned these things take a lot of skill to make. Actually I am suprised that they do not cost more than they do? I spoke to Brent Chapman when he gave a siminar at the Timonium show and he showed my the baits he uses. One of the baits was a custom Bagely square bill looking bait that he said cost $50. Not only did this bait cost $50 but he said the guy had a waiting list if you wanted to buy one. Allen

Tacklemaking On A Budget?
Crankbaits are the hardest lures to make IMO as they have so many variables. Besides hooks and split rings you will need lips, hook hangers and something to ballast the bait with. For wood I guess anything can be used but the two main ones I see being used are Balsa and Cedar. Some frugal ways to accomplish this are; make your own hook hangers out of 20 guage wire and use split shots as ballast weights. The lips are not that expensive so I just buy them but I know others have made their own. If you are going to start crankbait making I recommend trying to duplicate another crankbait first until you learn. My first couple were failures as I didn't ballast them, too much ballast, didn't seal so the became water logged, etc. Allen

Making Your Own Soft Plastics
It was going to be the last pour of the night just trying to pour the tails perfectly on some flukes. There is a small lip in my microwave and when I went to pull out the cup I bumped it. Well the cup was full and a wave of molted plastic ran over my fingers. That pic was taken about a week after it happened as my fingers were so swollen it loked like I was wearing a winter glove. Maryland's Who's who!
Are you fishing from the shore or a boat? I have fished just about everywhere there is to fish here in Washington County and can give you some spots. Allen We fish from shore. We have a small jon boat that is not registered to put a motor on right now. We mostly like ponds and the Potomac near Shepherdstown and Dam #4. Can you run an TM without registering it? Cunnigham Falls and Greenbrier are two small lakes you can fish from shore or a small boat. Blairs Valley as well but the wind really blows hard there at times. The only concern with these places is they starting stocking trout. Trout anglers will be elbow to elbow chucking powerbait along ever inch of shoreline. I took my boat to Greenbrier only once this year for about 4 hours and already had a run in with some of them. Allen

Your Go To Crank
RC 1.5, Copper perch is the most producing color but they all work. Bandit 100 in Old Matte light is second. Honorable mention and last years crankbait rookie of the year was the SK silent 5 series in Gizzard shad. While I didn't catch anything big on it I did catch a lot of fish on it. Allen
