I hate spinning gear
That is a strong word, be careful those spinning nazis will come after you ???. I don’t hate but I prefer baitcaster for most everything. I will use spinning not for weight limited but for slow shaking the Neko rig. I found it much more comfortable the way I hold spinning rod and light shaking with wrist than moving the whole palm/hand using baitcaster. To me though it is really old school to tie up spinning with light weight lure and baitcaster for power fishing. Yes is most case you have more control of the bass with baitcaster but spinning will give you a bit more enjoyment when you hear drag screaming. Nowadays a lot of baitcaster add drag clicking into their reel but no way near that excitement of spinning.

Best spinning reels under $150?
Someone that would be me but I said “3. Main gear of this reel is made from Zinc not aluminum like Ballistic or Tatula. Might not different much in beginning but overtime I’m not sure and definitely not the same class.” so equivalent nope, it classed lower than even Tatula. Daiwa is wired change a little bit of reel parts then adjust the price and called it another model.

Best spinning reels under $150?
Who mentioned Ballistic is trash? Man oh man!!!! Daiwa Digigear with Zinc still better than a lot of brand out there. The only miss leading is you said Caldia is JDM equivalent of ballistic. Im not sure if you ever heard of it, spinning reel become loose making more noise over time? Parts of it because of wear from Zinc gear and those hexagon handle.

Best spinning reels under $150?
I have heard a lot of rumors about this reel. I don’t say it is not a good reel for under 150 but buying JDM reel is pretty risky too. 1. Rumors, buying MQ body you need special tool that would set you back 30-50 bucks, otherwise professional service only. 2. The special tool for this model is not the same as Luvias MQ/Kage MQ. 3. Main gear of this reel is made from Zinc not aluminum like Ballistic or Tatula. Might not different much in beginning but overtime I’m not sure and definitely not the same class. 4. New Zaion material, this is still question a lot. Zaion V got used from Ballistic 200 dollars reel all the way down to Legalis 50 dollars reel. Heavier than Zaion that you found in old ballistic/Tatula. The Luvias FC MQ still use old Zaion frame and Zaion rotor. This Zaion V is between DS5 and Zaion. Just IMHO I don’t own the reel.

Interesting change of Amazon Japan
Now though Amazon US offer free shipping from Amazon Japan where you still can find some good deal. The bad part is being Amazon here they charge tax and take longer to ship than order direct from Amazon Japan. I op to order from Amazon US because I’ve been a prime member since beginning, collect a lot of point and gift card. I only carry two credit card with me, Amazon and Costco exclusive card.

Ned rig snags - am I doing something wrong?
It is really undeniable dragging weight uphill is calling for snag. If you don’t have problem with Texas rig, stay with it. Zman plastic float and should give similar action as on jig head. You mentioned tiny child rig, why don’t give it a try, you might be surprised the rate of fish you catch versus jig head you lost. I have some success with tiny child rig in the past as well. For Ned Rig, a lot ppl already mentioned the way to fish with less snagged. Believe it or not at same spot some day I catch 10 other days I loose 4-5 rigs without fish. When I fish Ned rig, the most important for me is tight line so I can feel the weight every moment. Popping Ned on slack line often time calling for snag. Sometimes you have to fish fast just swim it slowly and let the weight ticking bottom sometimes. Once I feel the jig head on top of pebble rock that when I slow down and do the shaking. Dont force it Ned rig not the only way to catch fish. I hate carry too many stuffs why I fish weightless most of the time.

Which Daiwa for chatterbaits?
Chatterbait doesn’t not need a lot of power to reel, unlike big deep crank or big spinnerbait, my .02. I used to use Tatula ct type R as my chatterbait reel before switching to bantam 7.2. Im not sure why some concern about gear ratio with chatterbait. I fish with 6.4 all the way to 8.1 and have no problem with it, unlike when I use 7.2 pulling big Colorado spinnerbait, I feel every inch of it. I still prefer brass gear for that hookset when you need it though. Tatula CT TYPE R XS 8.1, 3/8oz chatterbait and 7lb brass. Pushing the limit? 10lb Copolymer with tiny Chronarch 50e. I think we are concerned too much of what reel best for each technique instead of having fun of what we have?

Which Daiwa for chatterbaits?
Nope he did not get the G. Zillion G is USDM and price at 300 something. The different between both is G come with brass gear, Zillion JDM is aluminum gear made in Japan if that matter to you. Amazon price is cheaper but you might have to pay tax and take at least 2 weeks to arrive. Also Amazon price is varied by model/ gear ratio might not be as cheap as you think. I ordered HD 7 gear for 265 plus 20 tax since 20th and estimated to arrive Sep 8. The HD you just got might be good for chatterbait, why don’t you try it.

Senko on a slider head, is it just a worm at that point
As long as it catches fish, I don’t care what it called or recommended by Gary himself. I’ve seen ppl weighted Texas rig Senko and catch fish all the time.

Daiwa Zillion SV TW
I sold my bantam MGL for Zillion so that I compared Zillion to. I was considering Metanium and Zillion at time. I like the reel for smoothness and control, I lost the distance and comfort. Bantam palm better than zillion in my s-m glove size. For the fact that you fish in SoCal, JDM aluminum gear should fit you well and the price is just right at the moment. I plan to use this reel for 3/8jig chatterbait other MH use. Now knowing you that you like smaller reel just like me, Alphas SV TW should be considered. It as comfortable as Curado 70, a lot smoother and a lot more control in the wind or skipping. Better yet get both and you know what I mean. In this moment I’m waiting for right hand Zillion HD TW (brass gear, made in Japan) to arrive. I hope being right hand I would love it much more than my lefty zillion sv tw.

Need a hook for Pointer 48
Changing hook on pointer is a little bit tougher. It is not just the size of hook but weight to be considered as well. You want the action of pointer to suspended the same. Lucky craft said #12 and #12.

Shimano SLX making weird noise when reeling.
I think you pay only shipping cost to Shimano after the claim has been done. Shimano will ship to you free of charge.

So what the heck is "infinity drive?"
Yeah it is kind of started from new Stella FK, infinity revolution of everything ???. The only infinity I’m interested in is “Infinity loop” or the simple word “slow oscillation”. It is hard to find in bass size spinning reel these days.
-
So what the heck is "infinity drive?"
Same as Daiwa with dual bearing support on pinion gear which exists since original alphas 103. Now Daiwa call it hyper double support with Alphas SV TW.
-
So what the heck is "infinity drive?"
You made me wonder even though I’m not in market for Shimano anymore. I watched this guy compare old and new bantam, the new bantam have infinity drive. The guy compare main and pinion gear which is almost the same. The two bearings support pinion gear still there and both have bearing spool shaft (new bantam with spring). Finally the guy swapped new gear set onto old bantam and it fits and works. Go figure. I guess ppl with new 2022 bantam can show how pinion gear seat onto spool shaft and those spool shaft bearing with spring might do the trick of fitting into pinion? Otherwise it might just be a new name Shimano give to reels with connected spool shaft support bearing.

Opinion on The Free Rig
All the link under water I’ve seen the action just similar to unpegged Texas rig. Even some of the big name fish the techniques like hoping Texas rig. I do short hop or drag them like Texas rig when closers or shallower. To my understanding, the best effective way is too lift rod tip higher then immediately drop the rod tip let the weight pull slack line while the lure fall down slowly on it own. Why a lot of creatures lures work really well, another option would be slow sink rate plastic with flat side would work well. Dont quote me though, but next time when I’m on kayak and fish target area, free rig might be my choice. My plastic choice would be hand pour worm, dropshot worm with flat side, rage claw baby brush hog and hula grub.

FC leader vs. “whole spool” FC?
In most reliable brand YES, (I don’t trust cheap brand to use better quality line and advertised as leader material). The leader material will benefit the most of abrasion resistance for rock or those toothy fish while maintaining diameter compare to mainline. Do we need those for bass absolutely not but if you have money and wanna use the best of the best go ahead. When my friend target barramundi fish in Thailand we always use 30-40 lb leader material to deal with those teeth while using braid PE 0.6-1 as main line. The problem with leader material is stiffness which would effect the natural movement of some type lures. Using just mainline no leader you don’t have to deal with connections knot.

Shimano SLX making weird noise when reeling.
I believe it has to do with thumb bar not fully engaged. The thumb bar location is pretty high and once you rest your thumb on spool might put a little pressure on thumb bar. It happens with mine when my hand wet. I have to manually engage the thumb bar. You might be able to fix the issues by increasing spring pressure on pinion yoke. I cannot confirm yet since mine doesn’t happen a lot and I don’t see the need to adjust it. You shouldn’t reeling the handle when pinion gear is not seat properly, that will damage both gear permanently.

August Fishing
Cleaning your reels, that what I do every summer. I can catch fish year round though but over 100 degrees SoCal heat is unbearable. If I fish I choose late evening through night if your lake around. Another option is to go light or ultra light and target those smaller aggressively bass. I normally see those 1-2lb wolf pack roaming around shallow in the morning for bluegill this time of year

How many bass do you guys usually catch in SoCal pressured ponds i.e. El Dorado, Legg, etc.
One bass every two hours is pretty good for city park lake in SoCal. Don’t compare those who fish farm pond out there, totally different animal. I used to fish a lot at Cerritos Park 15-20 years ago. It was really tough since then. I fish pretty much every park lake around the luckiest I got was trout limit on a stock day with nobody on the lake. There are a few ppl here that fish local community pond in your area. You might be able to hook up with them @ghost @Jonas Staggs @skekoam

will bass eat something they are not familiar with?
Or even a moving bacon strip, true story though, I was targeting bullhead with bacon on bobbers rig while moving the bobbers, 2lb bass inhale it.

have you met up with any forum members and fished with them?
I used to fish with a few people from here and a few more from local fishing forum. They were great some I fish with more than once. We exchanged experience tip and techniques. My 3-400 acres lake (Canyon Lake) pretty well known and a myth to have big fish and easy to catch. Too bad fishing now is not my primary, and I only fish short hours. One of my day off is for the wife and another for Golf, luckily I can access to the lake 24/7 and I only want 1-2 fish per trip.

Favorite fishing knot
Trilene knot is the one that I can get the shortest tag end <1” but hard to clinch properly with FC line. I switch to uni and never be happier and still get pretty short 1-2” which sometimes I don’t even cut the tag end off. I use uni knot for most everything, terminal knot for all type line, connection knot for every combination of line. Just for once a while especially with stiff FC line I will switch to Palomar knot.
