Swim Jigs
you dont have to have a swim jig to swim a jig. the difference is usually head design and weight. the swim jig usually has a more cone shaped profile that swims through vegetation and wood easier.they are usually also a little lighter weight. the trailer as others have said makes a difference.some days they like a big flapping claw type trailer others a swimbait etc. for me they work best in clear water with calm winds with sunny skies. those days are almost impossible to get a spinnerbait bite. the more subtle realistic swim jig can shine.

Fluke swivel?
yup. we the trick worm is a good worm for lots of techniques and we use it for them. but thats what they were designed for. thats the reason for the flat bottom. to help it glide in several directions. if you fish shallow weedy water it can be deadly.

Medium Light for River Smallmouth
true all medium lights arent the same. but if you have one with a soft tip but a good solid back bone youll be fine. i use a meium light for lots of things ,ned, weightless senko. light grubs. as long as you have enough rod to get the hook set and play the fish you should be fine. im primarily fishing the susquehanna, so big river and pretty good size fish to 20 inches or so.

Fall
fall is tricky for me too until the water gets to about 60. from there down to about 50 or so the rattle bait and jerkbait bite can be real good. problem is thats usually about the time the whitetail rut starts heating up.ive tried to not hunt and fish all fall but when those leaves are all turned and we get cold nights and that deacying leaf smell.....i cant help it i have to go to the woods. its almost beyond my control.

How much do you spend a month on tackle?
too much. ive actually been pretty good lately , trying to save money for new lithium batteries. but the urge is building. i want a new expride b 76 medium heavy. also some jigs and plastics. the more i get called in for work the more i spend. take out my frustration at tackle warehouse.

what is your drop-shot worm of choice?
roboworms several different colors. xzone finesse worm , the tail floats better. xzone slammer for a minnow style bait.

Hardbaits. i simply suck with them.
i catch probably 4 times the fish on jigs or worms every year than i do on hard baits. ive always been that way.i wish i was better with hard baits because i can cover so much water. it takes a while to fish a grass bed with a jig or worm when you could fish down the edge with a crank or something.i keep working on it though.

Fall Rate
never done it with a wacky rig but this time of year a heavier weighted worm , jig or creature bait can definetely get more bites. same with a faster retrieve , bigger hops etc.

Ned Rig guys - do you find creature profiles like the Nikko Hellgrammite anywhere near as effective as the TRD or do you almost exclusively use stick baits?
if your fishing the classic midwest finesse yes. but sometimes i just want a smaller version of a good bait fished on light weight and light line. after a cold front, or in cold water or just a tough bite then yes id opt for somethimg with less action like the trd, ticklerz, or streakz.

i use several different baits. 4 inch straight tail worms streakz, rage ned bug etc.

Is it true that other than the first and last hour of daylight that river smallmouth are not on the bank but holding to midstream structure?
no. i fish the susquehanna alot and am constantly amazed at the fish i catch in very shallow water in the dead heat of the day in summer. in fact the slower deeper water is pretty much a dead zone this time of year unless it has good current.

How many rods/reels is enough???
its never enough
-
Dropshot problems
i usually reel in any slack and the just smoothly sweep to the side or over my head and reel. its a hook set but not a sharp snap like a jig or big texas rig. your just basically taking out the slack and moving the hook.

SCIV+ graphite?
look i didnt invent the stuff im just telling you what the designer said in an interview i heard. could be bamboo for all i know. lol

Shakey Head weight reccomendation
i carry all those also and find i use 1/8 the most. shakey head is a finesse technique to me. then i go to the other extreme and use 1/2 and 3/4 with 8 or 10 inch worms for deep fishing in summertime.

SCIV+ graphite?
its a little hard for me to comment on that. ive never fished one of the abu rods and sensitivity is subjective to me. i can only say ive fished a good bit of neko and flukes on the rod and have no trouble feeling bites with 15 pound braid and 10 pound flouro.

SCIV+ graphite?
its sc4 graphite which id the same graphite stcroix has used in the legend tournament for a few years. the plus comes from a material they call sc6. they developed it to build rods but although very high modulus and light they found it too brittle to use for a whole rod.what they could do was use it to reinforce certain parts of the rod and replace heavier materials formerly used there. they do the same with the victory line and sc3 graphite. to cut through all the technical jargon i have a current generation spinning rod 7ft medium. its better balanced and lighter than the previous generation and fishes on par with shimano expride and megabass orochi that i also own. as to which rod you like best i have no idea you can only decide that.

Why a Kayak?
i fish from a boat primarily . i do fish skinny water rivers from a kayak. i think alot of it as mentioned has to do with the waters in your area. if you have alot of small waters with not the best of ramps or electric only lakes a kayak may be the best option. if i didnt have a place to store it inside etc and if my state didnt have ridiculous laws on the electric only lakes id probably have a hobie. probably with a torqueedo on the back and a spot lock motor on the front and 2 possibly 3 graphs. total price for this would be about 12k or more. is that less than a 80k dollar boat yeah but it still aint cheap. and i cant use that boat on those lakes anyway.
