Medium Light for River Smallmouth

Featured Replies

I just recently got a new ML spinning rod and was wondering what you guys thought about using it for river smallmouth. I have primarily used a medium rod before but didn't know if a medium light would have the power to pull in a 3lb smallie from current.

I used to fish ultralights for PA smallies, so a ML is more than enough.  Have your drag set properly with a reel that has a smooth drag and you'll be in good shape.

A ML is more than enough for black bass, current or not. The real question comes down to, is X rod enough for X cover and X lures?

Low expectations.

Heck yes, I use medium light for Ned’s for large mouth. Got my  best on that.
6 lbs. great fight! Lotta fun on the lighter stuff

ML spinning gear and #10 mono is my go to for river smallies.

No one knows what ML is until they measure it.  Point Blank calls one of their blanks with an ERN of 19 ML.  A highly respected blank manufacuturer's owner called an ERN of 20 MH.  He markets a drop shot blank with an ERN of 13 as M.

I've taken plenty of big smallies with the ERN og 19, no problem.  I might like a little more power if in a substantial current.

true all medium  lights arent the same. but if you have one with a soft tip but a good solid back bone youll be fine. i use a meium light for lots of things ,ned, weightless senko. light grubs. as long as you have enough rod to get the hook set and play the fish you should be fine. im primarily fishing the susquehanna, so big river and pretty good size fish to 20 inches or so.

Med light is what I prefer for river smallies

ML Xf works great here in Missouri

Sure no problem, as long as the drag is set properly. Just don't expect to winch them back with brute force, or boat flip them.  This was caught today with a ML rod and a 1/4oz popper.
