  1. This is coming from a guy who owned several. They were very functional and easy to service. Beyond that I found them to be quite geary. Newer platforms (I & K) are superior (IMHO) although I'm also one who preferred the old VBS braking system as @JustJamesmentioned.
  2. I'll bet the original bearings are as smooth as anything you can buy. Just soak them in some thinner or acetone and re-oil. That reel is a great caster but wouldn't be great under 1/4 oz. no matter what bearings you use.
  3. I spook fish off the banks all year long in the small waters I fish. May be different in bigger lakes. I fish the sunward side and if there's a breeze blowing toward me all the better (as long as it's not too cold). Under 40 I need to keep the wind behind me for obvious reasons.
  4. Very sorry to hear that. Never knew mine either. Have to think it impacted my personality.
  5. I experimented with single hooks on several of my lures last year. Owner makes a single hook for lure replacement. Problem is that you need to go a couple of sizes bigger than the treble was and invariably the hooks want to interlock with each other. Adding split rings on a Torpedo will make the problem worse. The stock trebles aren't the best but with lures like this you're left with little choice given the way they're mounted. I'd leave them alone and just keep them sharp. My motive was to reduce fish mortality but the hassle wasn't worth it.
  6. I know this is technically wrong but I just start by getting things open with my fingernail then insert the new hook behind the old one and use it to push the old one out. Bigger split rings need something stronger.
  7. With 832 nothing over 15 and preferably 10. 30 is way overkill. 832 is thick for its stated strength. Also, drag ratings aren't important with spinning and way oversold for BC as well. Single digit settings suffice just fine.
  8. Culvert pattern is key to my success in the HOA lakes I fish.
  9. My wife thinks I'm married to my stuff instead of her.
  10. Sounds like me. I'll get on a decent bite then switch, thinking something else is even better. Eventually I'm back where I started after wasting time. This is one reason some of my best outings have come when I walked out the door with one bait that's already tied on and that's it. (I bank fish and usually close to home). As far as my style I really enjoy moving baits like lipless and wakes but finesse catches more for me.
  11. Depends entirely on where you're fishing and what you're fishing with.
  12. I thought Gliss was going to be my new go to a few years ago but found it to be too fragile even at 24#. Granted I don't use a leader. Something between the 24 and the 40# may have changed my mind if they made it. The stuff cast amazingly far.
  13. Good idea. We've had an IN thread for a good while but it keeps getting shuffled back due to a lack of interest.
  14. I use 832. It's much stronger than stated(more so than other brands). 10# will handle most everything. I use 6-10# on different rigs.
  15. Beautiful fish! Two weeks ago I was bragging like that here in IN. We're froze up good now. Enjoy your weather. We're paying for ours, but we should expect it here.
  16. I came to terms with the broken rod that I had re-tipped last year. What started this topic was the idea that I wanted to do something similar on a lighter action rod. Did so this past week and I'm real happy with the result. I learned one thing by way of this thread. Fast and stiff are two very different things.
  17. Good stuff but guys need to know it's pretty true to test. We get used to thinking braid breaks way over stated. I bought some 30 once for baitcasting and ended up using it for spinning because it was so thin. (And I'm the guy who always preaches to buy line by dia. rather than stated breaking strength). Go figure.
  18. I get home from work before she does. In all honesty she gives me plenty of license for feeding my vice.
  19. I don't argue with mine either. I just don't tell her.
  20. I've been using TSI 321 for a while now. Seems to last a long time. Bought mine in a 4 oz. bottle for 18.00. I believe I've heard it mentioned cheaper since then. I don't see myself using it up for a long time.
  21. Excellent posts by you guys. Would make a good thread on its own.
  22. The difference isn't really noticeable unless you're throwing lighter baits. Besides, you would have to source it from Japan. Casitas was actually discontinued a few months ago and replaced with SLX but is certainly an adequate reel. Combination of composite frame and lack of second pinion support bearing makes gear mesh a bit audible. It does cast well and gets the job done.
  23. They're probably the same parts just different #'s. Shimano is known for that. I'm assuming we're talking about a right handed reel? Just go for the BNT 3822. Also a good idea to get a new pawl (BNT 2150) when replacing a worm gear. Sight shows that as out of stock with a cross reference to part# 3723. Edit; Google Dads Ole Tackle. They've got what you need. I've used them before. Best of luck.
  24. Do you still have saltwater options that are convenient? I recall you referencing that in other posts. I'm only 64 and have some orthopedic issues that limit what I'd really like to do. Best wishes to you.
