With that size screen, you would be better off having a separate chartpotter so you won't use up display real estate for a particular tecnlology with a split screen view. I use a 5" display unit for GPS beside a 10.0" display unit so I can have full screen Side Imaging to see stuff better if I need a navigation aid.

If you put the LSS transducer at the hull bottom level, it needs to be to the right or left of the diameter of the prop so it won't cause aeration of the water going to the prop and water intake. If you have it above the hull bottom, then you can have it as close to the engine as you want as long as the lower unit does not hit it when trimmed all the way down. The proximity of the LSS to the 2D transducer is for the DI overlay on the 2D image. Otherwise it makes no difference.

Lowrance units already read the Sonar Charts data. It is Navionics that has to process Lowrance data so Lowrance uses can participate in the Sonar Charts program. I suppose that will happen some time in the future. The sonar companies use different data formats and are not interchangeable without translation. There are no Lakemaster products available for VIrginia. Tennesse is the closest to Va that Lakemaster has coverage currently. The AutoChart software won't be on the market until Spring. No schedule has been announced for any new regional cards other that the most recent for the West. Lowrance units are not Lakemaster compatable. The company that owns Humminbird bought the Lakemaster company and now Lakemaster is exclusive to Humminbird.

The Sonar Charts program is not available for participation with Lowrance products yet. Just Humminbird and Raymarine now and Garmin soon. Sonar Charts can be viewed with Lowrance units by selecting FIshNChip. That is the setting to view it on Humminbird units too. Any Humminbird unit that has GPS/Sonar and a card reader with a record function in the menu can do it. The only data that is utilized is depth and location. An imaging unit is not needed and no, an imaging overlay is not part of that software function. Lakemaster will be coming out with computer software that will do the imaging overlay somewhat like Dr. Depth and Structure Scan overlay on Lowrance units. That product is called AutoCharts. It will do contours like the Sonar Charts and can be used on a Humminbird unit. That data is not shared like Navionics Sonar Charts is. Check with a marine electronics dealer for a deal on a Humminbird SIde Imaging unit for less than $1000. There are several available now. With Humminbird Side Iimaging, it is all inclusive, you don't need to purchase addtional parts to get full function of 2D sonar. Side Imaging, Down Imaigng and GPS/mapping. As far as I know, I am the only one that has recorded Hunting Run Lake to create that map. I still have a few places to record to improve the accuracy of specific bottom features. I have mostly done general data collection to get overall coverage. My first few uploads didn't have coverage in some of the coves like this, so after that was applied, I recorded the blank areas. Hunting Run was not even an outline on the Navionics data file until I sent in some recordings. They added the lake name later after I sent them a message with it. I had already been using my own outline I created with Googe Earth a few years ago:

That is a good price and has more than the description indicates. It states it has Uni-map and it actually has ContourXD background mapping which is 3000 locations with contour lines. Plus it is Ethernet capable. They used an old 798 model description.

The Web App has the data that you get when you purchase a new Navionics map software card for a GPS or GPS/Sonar unit that reads Navionics software if you update the card after purchase.

The Navionics web site has current contour maps for viewing with their Web App. That app is updated daily with Freshest Data and it also shows the customer generated contour maps know as Sonar Charts. When you visit that site, select Products and then Web App. There is a circle at the lower left when it is Grey, that is the Navionics data. If you click on that circle in the 1000' zoom range or closer,the circle turns Blue and that is the user generated data. Navionics also has the Mobile App for your smartphone or tablet.

I would not recommend the 698ci HD SI Combo, The discontinued 798ci HD SI Combo or 598ci HD SI Combo would be a better choice. The new 600 series units have narrower dispays which is exaclty what you do not want with the Side Imaging technology. BIGGER is better with Side Imaging or Structure Scan, smaller is worse.

If you want the opportunity to catch numbers of bass, go to Hunting Run Res. near Fredericksburg. It will be open starting the first Sat in March. It is closed during the winter. There are rental boats available or you can fish from shore or a fishing pier. There is a fee to fish there and launch personal boats. It has a very high population of bass and catching 50-150 bass a day is very common. My best numbers day there in 2013 was 184 bass. Pick whatever presentation you want to practice with.

That is different than the snell hook you posted a picture of. That hook is a flat eye jig hook without the lead head. The Strike King Denny Brauer jig has that hook style. It is used in a Do-it mold for making jigs. Check the Jann's Netcraft web site. That is a source for making lures and they carry those hooks. I just got the 2014 catalog yesterday.

That is a snell hook. I have not seen that hook style in any sizes larger than 2. The only similar hooks in larger sizes are jig hooks with some extension before the eye offset.

The HD in that 898 Humminbird model only means it has LED backlighting and the other one without HD has CCFL backlighing. The model number is the screen size. 800 series is 7" diagonal and 900 series is 8" diagonal. HD has nothing to do with image quality unless it is the 700 or 500 series which have the highest pixel density in the industry. But in the case of the 798 ci HD SI, the HD just means it is Ethernet capable--that's it, nothing else. The earlier models of the 798, (798c SI and 798ci SI) have the exact same display and backlighing, but are not Ethernet capable. The most important thing with either Side Imaging or Structure Scan is screen width. Get the biggest you can afford. That is because image size is determined by the range setting which you adjust. Image sizes with regular sonar and Down Imaging/Down Scan is determined by the depth. Basically HD is just two letters of the alphabet that may or may not have any reference to what you think High Definition is. BQ, AZ, MR, KX, ect could be used instead of HD

If you want GPS/mapping and 2D sonar in that price range, you have limited choices and that would be a gray scale display and a small display size--technology has a price. Pretty much any product produced by a major name brand mfg is a good choice--Lowrance, Humminbird, Raymarine, Garmin You don't have to have used one to know its capabilities as compared to a higher price unit. For a new unit, do you shopping at a marine electronics dealer instead of a big box general sporting goods place since they typically sell below MSRP and the big box stores do not unless there is a special sale going on. The only current model that meets your requirements is the Lowrance Mark 4. Add another $100 and you can get more choices in a dual technology unit. I'll send you a PM with more details.

It certainly will. All the new Navionics mapping cards are now microSD in an adaptor. I have several microSD/adaptor cards for recordings and screen snapshots with my units. Get a SanDisk class 10 card for the best performance. The unit can use up to a 32 GB size.

I use a superline with a mono equivelent diameter of 10 lb test. Typically that is 50# superline. I like the stiffer types like Spiderwire Stealth in most cases.
