  1. Great info! In regards to the taper aspect what types of fishing presentation would you want what option?
  2. When trying to evaluate the differences between different rods I see terms like "action" and "taper" and I have always thought they referred to the same thing and the terms were interchangeable. Recently I heard that is not true and I am confused, can someone educate me?
  3. I've been thinking about getting a composite rod for crank bait fishing. Does anyone have a "budget friendly" option they would point me to? What length would recommend?
  4. Was given a nice present from a customer I did some work for the other day. I was actually thinking about getting a setup specifically to use as a frog/jig/pitch soft plastics rod and I was given a Daiwa IM-7 7’6” heavy graphite rod. I’m a real big fan of 832 Sufix but I’m not sure what strength to go with. I have 40 on most of my rods and was leaning towards either 50 or 65 test. If it matters I live in the Midwest so while I may frog in some juicy areas it’s not like I’m going to be punching through a lot of thick mats and such around here. TIA for the recommendations!
  5. Hmm, I was all gung ho about this idea but after reading people talk about you really need a different colored lens based upon the water clarity/color on that day and the sunlight conditions I am starting to rethink this. If I could find a nice universal pair I'd do it but this is starting to seem to complicated and expensive.
  6. Been thinking about getting some glasses for fishing. Was hoping someone could suggest a good “budget friendly” pair that does not look too dorky. In regards to what is best for me does it matter what color water I fish normally or species of fish? TIA for the recommendations!
  7. That's kind of what I was thinking, about frogging. So you are saying this thing is so buoyant that it would prevent a rod and reel from sinking if it feel in the water?
  8. Yep, that is it. What is the point of this item anyway?
  9. Who makes that rubber red "ball" Shaw Grigsby uses at the base of his fishing rod?
  10. Can you explain the reasoning behind putting different sized hooks on?
  11. I have a couple of 1/2 oz Strike King Red Eye lipless crank baits that need to get their hooks replaced. What is the correct size? Any specific model you would point me towards?
  12. I need a little help as to what kind of rod/reel I should go with. Pretty much fish for LMB exclusively. I've got a new 7' Lew's Mach 2 combo that I use kind of as a universal rod for a lot of lures/techniques. I also have a 6'9" spinning set up for more finesse stuff. I'm looking for a rod/reel setup that I can use with a frog, pitch a jog/soft plastic and even use with a crank bait from time to time. I certainly understand ideally to have a specific rod for each of those techniques but the budget currently does not allow that. For a single rod that can handle those 3 techniques I was thinking about something 7'2" to 7'6" heavy rod, not sure if I want it to have a fast or slower action, not sure if I want a graphite or composite rod or what. Braid or fluoro for this job?
  13. Dropped my hook remover in the lake tonight and need to get something new to do the job. Just curious if anyone has one they really like or have had good luck with?
  14. I went up to the local Bass Pro at it really looks like the baby size is a better fit.
  15. I have a question about a soft plastic trailer for 1/2 oz jigs or chatterbaits. I want to try out the Missle D-Bombs but can't decide which size is more fitting. The normal size is 4.5 inches and the baby size is a bit thinner and 3.5 inches. I am kind of leaning towards the baby for the size lures I will be using but I am interested in others opinions. Thanks!
  16. No, I want something with more room and again we would be on ponds and small lakes. No boat waves I need to worry about and if rough weather was near we would be off the water anyway. Again I've owned boats like this before and am perfectly comfortable with the stability issue.
  17. For some background I've got a pontoon that I keep on the water year round so I am not a complete boat rookie but I never take it off the water or have to put it back on. Anyway, 10 years ago I had a pickup truck and a 10 foot pond hopper that I would take wherever to fish. I would just slide it out and then slide it in the water and go. Getting it out was more work in that I would have to pull it out of the water, empty it out then wrestle it up and in the truck bed. Now I am looking at getting a 12 foot aluminum or plastic boat for me and my 7 year old son to be able to take to random lakes and ponds to fish after work and such. The problem is this boat will be a bit bigger/heavier and I am not as young as I used to be. My 7 year old is not strong enough to be any kind of help and I know have an Astro van and will need to get some sort of trailer. I'm not sure if I should go for a boat specific trailer or a generic one and get use out of it doing whatever else. I have never put a boat in or got it out at a boat ramp but the concept seems easy enough. Most have a rope and winch you attach and once you kind of get things lined up you attach it and pull it up and secure it, right? I guess I would not have that with a non boat specific trailer. Also I envision lots of places we would want to fish (like ponds or small lakes) that do not have a ramp where I would easily put it in but I would probably have to wrestle it out of the water then figure out a way to get it back on the trailer by myself. I guess I am asking for opinions from your small boat veterans for advice, suggestions or ideas to do what I want to do here. THANKS!!
  18. Hmm, that is a good question. I will have to reflect and post my thoughts and see if you more experienced boat owners can point me in the right direction. For now can someone educate me about the whole double hull situation?
  19. I'm in the market for a small plastic jon boat for me and my son. Saw one advertised locally saying it had a "double hull." I'm assuming this just makes it more durable, correct? Any real advantage or disadvantage to this design? Does it increase the weight of it a lot?
  20. Is it more "efficient" being in front and pulling or in the back pushing?
  21. LOL, I told you it was a stupid question but I just wanted to make sure. So in other words no matter whether I want the trolling motor upfront or in the back it will work as I'd expect and there is no different model or anything I would need to do to the prop to make it work as I would expect, correct?
  22. Pretty amateur question but I need to make sure of something. A few years ago I had a 10 foot jon boat with a trolling motor clamped on the front. Looking to buy a 12 foot jon boat this time around and I think I will need to clamp it on the back as that is where I will be sitting in the back with my 7 year old up front. Being that it is the only source of transportation will there be any disadvantage to having it in the back versus the front? Do I need to do anything to the motor or prop to make sure when it is in the back of the boat that when I put it on a forward speed it actually goes forward versus reverse?
