Cold and Slow, but One Surprise!
I fished two drifts using minnows without a bite, but my partner was catching a few with a heavier weight and catching them right on the bottom. I thought a "craw profile" might work. I fished two different colored tubes without a touch, then changed to a hair jig with a Rage Tail craw trailer, 3/4 cut off so the head and claws were basically a modified chunk. A broader answer is from Rick Clunn, "Catching bass is easy, finding them is the challenge." So, we were on some fish and I thought it was the perfect scenario to try some artificials...I was wrong. I'm not going to be hard headed, I'm going back to what works! 8-)

Fly Fishing for Bass
Welcome aboard! I'll bet a few guys have caught a nice fish, bass or trout, on fly fishing tackle, but I don't actually know anyone that has. It seems like a little fish method to me. My observation is that fly fishermen are all show and no go. It seems to be all about "fishing" not "catching". :

Cold and Slow, but One Surprise!
Fished five hours on the Tennessee River Saturday. We started out early with good water and my partner boated a 4 lb smallmouth, less than five minutes into our first drift. We ended up with seven, but nothing big. I fished artificials for the most part, my buddy live shiners. As expected, I was out fished 6:1. On the other hand, I caught a number of trash fish which included a 24 lb buffalo! Man, that was quite a fight on a smallmouth rig. We had fair action, but never found the right fish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ictiobus 8-)

Spinnerbait rod??
I would always prefer G. Loomis, but for this specific application I fish my "all-around" treble hook rod. This is also my rig for buzzbaits and medium weight spinnerbaits: St. Croix Avid AVC66MF which has a soft tip. For heavier lures (3/4 oz Ledgebuster Single Willow Blade), Legend Elite ES70 MHF. 8-)

are worms and jigs enough or do i need a lot of other lures
There are times when bass are much more focused on "moving lures". When baitfish are concentrated and plentiful is a good example. During these times, minnow type baits will outperform finesse presentations. When a topwater bite is on, they will always outperform soft plastics and jigs, especially in terms of numbers. That said, I fish jigs or soft plastics 95% of the time when I'm after green bass. 8-)

Why so many MH rods?
Great thread! Another consideration is the line you fish. Since the vast majority of my fishhing is on structure in open water, I have a strong preference for smaller diameter lines with low visibility. A Medium Power rod is a much better fit for me when fishing soft plastics. 8-)

Suggestion for a new forum
;D ;D Outstanding! When the net's unguarded, take the shot! We will certainly discuss this suggestion, but BassResource.com is not promoting Shimano, they came to us with a very generous offer to answer questions on a timely basis. For that we are grateful. Although I might be a little bias, I had nothing to do with this. 8-)

We already have one, "Other Fish Species".

Oklahoma vs Florida
Congratulations OU fans! I hated the whooping you put on my Tigers last night, but now I'm a fan! I'm sure your guys will represent the conference well. I'm looking for a lot of Big XII wins in the bowl games. Good luck to all. 8-)

Guaranteed To Catch Bass
Low visibility, better bait action, more bites, improved line management and for the most part, I fish structure in open water, not cover. #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Hybrid Ultra Soft is 11.9 lb test. 8-)

Problem w/ St Croix Legend Elite
I would send it in to St. Croix, include a nice note regarding the problem and request a replacement. I bet they send you a perfect new rod. 8-)

UFO's
Distance is a problem. Even aliens with technology to freeze themselves and travel at the speed of light can't get here very fast. How or why would they target earth? The closest galaxy is Andromeda, 2.5 million light years away. I suspect all UFOs are experimental, next generation airforce prototypes. The Stealth Bomber would be a recent example. Anytime it was seen by non-military personnel, it was reported as a UFO. The top secret classificiation of these prototypes results in "no comment" from our security forces. The SR-71 Blackbird is probably the most famous UFO. Denied for more than a decade, this plane is/ was the fastest ever developed, significantly "faster than a speeding bullet". 8-)

Do You Eat Bass?
** MODERATOR NOTE ** Well now, if you didn't get in this thread in time, the topic pops up every few months. Don't resurrect it now, that's a no-no, but you'll have another opportunity to comment in a few months...9 pages is enough for now. Goodnight Irene -Kent a.k.a. roadwarrior Global Moderator

storing rods
Reel Mech always said to store upright with the reel removed. I store mine upright on a wall rack, drag backed-off, but reels attached and ready to go. Most of my reels have never been removed except for servicing. 8-)

$25 Oil?
Surprize! Just ripping us off for the holiday. We never have figured out why gasoline in the St. Louis area is 25-30 cents higher than KC. I paid $1.36 on the Kansas side of KC last weekend. Highway gas was $1.56 on the way home. We're $1.39-$1.59 here in the Memphis area, but we can save up to 65 cents a gallon with a Schnucks discount card, around 80 cents a gallon! 8-)

Rage Anaconda Strikes New All-Time Heavyweight Record
Well, I don't find any comment that seems "defensive" to me. Those of us that have fished the Anaconda love it and have had some pretty good luck with the bait. In the other thread, I found everyone's hook suggestions interesting. However, even though "You da MAN!" I'm still not going to fish an Eagle Claw!
