Need to upgrade my spinnerbait rod...
The kid specifies 6'6 and you throw out a 7' rod? : The term he used was "preferably". 7' is a better length for this application, longer casts and more forceful hooksets. However, the rod is also offered in a 6 1/2' version, EC66MHF, and is listed on the same webpage I posted. :

Need to upgrade my spinnerbait rod...
I have exactly what you are looking for, the St. Croix Legend Elite, EC70MHF: http://www.stcroixrods.com/rods/default2.asp?rodname=20§ion=spin Mine is matched with a Shimano Calais 200. In addition to spinnerbaits, this is the rod I use to fish Mattlures Baby Bass. 8-)

Scientific approach to bass fishing
Back to simple: The "right" bait in the wrong place never works, but the "wrong" bait in the right place sometimes does! "Location and presentation", it really can be that simple. 8-)

Re: Need tips using soft plastics
Spend some time in the BassResource.com Library, "Fishing Articles" at the top of the page. Initially, focus on the "Beginners" section. We have material covering everything! Good luck! 8-)

Fishing Deep of SMB
I'm not convinced there is a "magic presentation" and I would expect it to vary from day to day, but what has been successful for me is letting the lure sink to the bottom, lift the spinnerbait with a long draw, then fall on slack line. 8-)

Fishing Deep of SMB
Nice fish! Generally speaking, the larger smallmouth will be associate with structure in current on all of the Tennessee River reserviors. In addition to tubes, grubs and jigs, the 3/4 oz Ledgebuster Single Blade Spinnertbait is a big bass lure that very few anglers employee. Give it a try, you might be surprised! 8-)

swimming pool ?
I test all new hardbaits in a swimmining pool to make sure they run properly. As a matter of fact, for the majority of my lures, this is the only time they have ever been wet! Anyhow, I have never noticed any effect on any fishing equipment from "fishing" in a concrete pond. : 8-)

mbr843c or mbr844c
The MBR844C is the BOMB! Maybe someone else will comment more specifically on the 843, but I think the tip is too soft for the applications you have described. 8-)

Tieing knots on Spinnerbaits and Buzzbaits
I tie a Palomar, but I have been experimenting with the Sixteen-Twenty Knot (also Called Duncan or Pitzen Knot): http://206.210.94.83/assets/recommended_knots/pdf/fhf_knot_sixteen_twenty.pdf 8-)

These listing don't meet your "only five" criteria, but they are suggestions some of our members made on another thread: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1143177139 8-)

New to boards and fishing
Welcome aboard! If you want to get involved in the sport, spend some time reading "Fishging Articles" at the top of the page. We have an extensive library with just about everything you need to know. You will learn much more in a shorter period of time reading the articles before asking questions on the Forum. Now, if you just want to catch some fish "right now", crickets. minnows and worms are dynamite. Hook them up on a split shot rig and a bobber. You and the kids will catch some fish, guaranteed! HSTA vs. STX
Welcome aboard! I have the STX mounted on a St. Croix AV66MF. The reel balances well and can be adjusted "on the fly". I haven't had it long enough to strongly recommend the reel, but every owner who has posted on this forum seems to be pleased. 8-)
