The Fat Ika has been my most productive lure for the past two years and accounted for my biggest bass at Lake Fork last week. I fish the bait tentacles forward, weightless and weedless on a Gamakatsu or X-Point 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook and Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6.

You don't need any new equipment to fish a jerkbait. However, if you are looking for a new spinning combination that is perfect for all medium weight and lighter treble hook lures, this is my suggestion: Generally, 6 1/2' or 7' Medium Power/ Moderate Action matched with a 2500 series reel. Specifically, Fenwick Techna AV AVS70MM/ Shimano Stradic 2500FH/ Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6.

Well, Lake Fork was an eye-opener for me. No one EVER cuts in on the lakes and rivers I fish, sometimes there aren't any other boats on the water! At full pool, Bull Shoals has 1,050 miles of shoreline encompassing 45,000 acres of lake surface. Except for some concentration of boats near the principal marinas, I rarely see anyone on the lake. On the Tennessee River, 99% of the recreational boat traffic is within a mile of Pickwick Dam, the rest of the water is mine. Lake Fork was fun, but I couldn't (wouldn't) handle that crowd on a regular basis.

At that pricing point I would suggest taking a look at the St.Croix Avid and the Fenwick Techna AV.

Well, why not alternate with the Fat Ika. I switched back and forth last week at Lake Fork and caught the majority of my bass on the Fat Ika, including my two best fish. I fish it just like the Senko, but sometimes the bass just prefer a different action and/ or an alternative profile. I think you would find the GYCB Kreature to be another bass magnet in the grass. Same topic, different angle: I fish some small ponds close to the house. I like to fish different lures and techniques on many of these short trips. I don't take soft plastics with me if I'm fishing a shallow crankbait, spinnerbait, top water, etc. I fish 1 lure only... Forced discipline!

Welcome aboard! I think the most appropriate size spinning reel for bass fishing is the 2500 series. I would suggest looking at the Shimano Symetre ($79) or the Stradic ($120). Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 is around 11.9 lb test and perfect for spinning tackle.

To become a member of the Shimano Posse only requires one reel. We have a "big tent" and everyone is welcome... even if you sometimes fish the "wrong" brand! :

Welcome aboard! I generally like 7' Medium Power rods, but that is just personal preference. I think Power is a function of #1 the weight of the lures you are throwing; #2 the cover or structure you generally fish and #3 the size of the fish you target. So, with that in mind, my suggestions are: For crankbaits: 7' Medium Power/ Moderate Action (soft tip). For heavier and deep running lures, Heavy Power/ Slow Action. (I recommend these same rods for all treble hook lures, depending on weight). For soft plastics: 7' Medium Power/ Fast or Extra Fast Action (firm tip).

Great buy! I have the ES70MF which is my soft plastics rod. You will not be disappointed.
