I like 60-70 yards of fluorocarbon so I don't feel the knot and have plenty of line to spare. For spinning gear I fish Tatsu #6, for baitcasting Tatsu #12 or #15.

A more useful rod would be something you would like for fishing jigs. This will work just fine to start with. I would recommend at least 7'. We can make specific recommendations depending on your budget.

Jerkbait rod. Mine is 6'10" MF with a soft tip.

Well, technique specific gear is certainly not necessary, but it's fun to fish exactly the perfect rods and reels.

The weathermen get giddy when "everyone's going to die!" So far the storm has been a bust. Trees and viaducts have some icing, but the ground is too warm for accumulation. The rain ends by noon with clearing. No doubt, it's still going to get bitter cold, but the 'crisis' is overblown.

Okay, that's fair. I quit fishing traditional grubs when I found what I consider better alternatives in the same category. First was the Hula Grub. Initially I fished the double tail, but when GYCB introduced their single tail, that was the winner. For a couple of years this was the hottest soft plastic on the Tennessee River. Another GYCB alternative that I still use is the Kreature. I still have a Plano box of Kalin & GYCB grubs. You or the OP are welcome to them for free.

Well, there may be some local tournaments that allow participants to keep fish (kids charity tournaments come to mind), 99.9% are always catch and release.
