The jig head and line are lost in bottom clutter. I think the fish focus on the trailer. That's not necessarily the case with soft plastics. I like a leader on weighted presentations and copolymer (Yo-Zuri Hybrid) or fluorocarbon with spinning gear for weightless rigging. 8-)

The remaining oil “will weather, it will break down naturally. Mother Nature will do her part.” An estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil leaked from BP's Macondo well between April 20 and July 15, according to government scientists. BP was able to capture about 800,000 barrels of crude from the well before it entered the Gulf. Browner said the government will “continue to be vigilant” on cleaning up oil in the region. BP's successful effort to control pressure in the well yesterday by forcing drilling mud into it is “good news,” she said. About three-quarters of the 4.1 million barrels spilled directly into the Gulf by BP's well has evaporated, dispersed, been captured or otherwise removed from the environment, The New York Times reported, citing a government study it said will be released today. “I find it very hard to believe, impossible actually, that they have three-quarters of the oil accounted for,” Samantha Joye, a professor of marine sciences at the University of Georgia in Athens, said today in an e-mailed message. Joye was among scientists who discovered plumes of oil under the water's surface and has been continuing to survey and analyze the results. ‘Invisible' Oil Some of the oil has probably dropped to the seafloor, “where it is also invisible to our eyes,” Joye wrote in her blog on Aug. 1. “The fact that this oil is ‘invisible' makes it no less of a danger to the Gulf's fragile ecosystems. Quite the contrary, the danger is real and the danger is much more difficult to quantify, track and assess.” Earlier today, London-based BP reported a “significant milestone” toward plugging the well permanently, as engineers carried out the “static kill” to inject drilling mud into the well over a period of eight hours yesterday. BP said it will consult with National Incident Commander Thad Allen on whether to pump more mud and whether to attempt to plug the well from the top with cement. BP fell 3.6 pence to 412 pence at 1:16 p.m. in London trading. The cost of insuring BP's debt for a year with credit- default swaps dropped below five-year premiums today for the first time in two months on speculation the bid to close the well will succeed. Browner said completion of a relief well, begun May 2 and now within about 100 feet (30.5 meters) of intercepting the damaged bore, is necessary to permanently plug the well. The relief well will be done in 10 days to 14 days, she said.

I tie several knots, but this has become a favorite: Sixteen-Twenty, also known as a Pitzen or Duncan Knot http://www.orlandooutfitters.com/knots/knot.asp?id=12 For braid, San Diego Jam; copolymer or mono-filaments of equal size, Blood Knot; leader to braid, Alberto's Knot. Still, the Palomar Knot is easy to tie and bulletproof! 8-)

I still hate braid. However, switching to braided line (PP 50/12) has improved my jig fishing dramatically! Direct tie for me with jigs. Fluoro leader, Alberto's knot for weighted soft plastics. 8-)

I haven't fished the Anaconda on this water, but a general comment is that the Thumper is more subtle. 8-)

I think you would be VERY pleasantly surprised with the versatility a Medium Power rod offers. Specifically, the St. Croix Avid AVC68MXF or G. Loomis GLX MBR842C (my favorite rod). 8-)

Over the years, the GYCB Senko has been my #1 producer. Since the introduction of the Fat Ika several years ago, it has been a close second for largemouth and my #1 soft plastic for smallmouth bass. (The Rage Tail Baby Craw is coming on strong!) The Fat Ika is best suited for shallow water or more generally, <12' deep. Always weightless and skirt forward. Thin wire Gamakatsu 3/0 or 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook. I have been fishing a new (to me) lake a few miles from my house. It's a reclaimed gravel quarry, 57 acres and 60+ feet deep in the middle! Before filling, the perimeter was rebuilt so that shallow water extends out from the bank about 20 yards, then drops off dramatically. The shelf supports grass and other vegetation in clear water. The main forage is threadfin shad, bluegill, crappie, crawdads and bugs, especially dragonfly right now. Some of the regulars, neighbors really, have told me big bass are being caught on 12" purple worms around dusk. I have only fished this water a few times and caught nothing but dinks. The previous weekend I attacked with the 10" Thumper among other things, but came away with nothing worth reporting. Yesterday I brought a couple of Swarming Hornet presentations to mimic the shad, but the results were the same at first. I arrived at the park a little after 5 o'clock and it was still black dark. Drank some coffee and smoked a few cigarettes waiting on first light. Started fishing with the Hornet, trying a number of different retrieves, but the results were the same: numbers of small bass. Around 6 o'clock I rigged up my first 7" Thumper on a 4/0 Moaner Stroker Hook (first time) http://www.moanerhooks.com/ ; 1/4oz tungsten bullet weight, black; spooled with #12 fluorocarbon on a baitcasting rig. Surprisingly, I caught a better fish on the first cast. Nothing very special, but better. For the next two hours I caught bass on nearly every cast. I caught a few more dinks, but most were tournament keepers, 2-4 lbs. Amongst the many, two received the "bout 5 lb" designation. All of these fish were caught on ONE 7" Thumper. I know Big O designs his soft plastics for his loyal following, but he's going to have to tweak the composition on these baits. My worm was torn up almost as bad as my fingers, but I just wanted to see how long it would last in battle. All and all, I caught around 40 bass on this one bait. Amazing!

I'll post the whole story later...Around forty bass, at least 100 lbs in two hours and a couple of what we all "5 or 6lbers". 8-)
