My first one was a small single tray, made of brittle bakelight plastic. The only contents were split shot weights, Eagle Claw hooks, a fish scaler, and a spool of Montgomery Wards mono line. I received this box as a Christmas gift in 1966. When I got seriously into bass fishing, I bought a large three tray box made by Rebel. This box held a lot of stuff, but had a poorly designed latch. I lugged the heavy box up and down the bank wherever I fished. After spilling the contents a couple of times due to the bad latch, I retired this one. Eventually, I bought one of the gold colored Plano suitcase models. This was the best one, with solid dual latches, plenty of compartments for various baits, and a good design overall. I used it for several years, and my grandson is using it now. These days, I carry two flat Plano boxes in the boat, and for bank trips, a much smaller 4"x6" flat box. These are made by Plano, and have worked well. I add and subtract baits as I need to. Now, when I look at any tacklebox of any size, I always look at the latches first. I want latches that snap shut firmly and stay shut until you want to open them. I'm thinking that most folks use a tackle bag of some sort now. This seems to be a good way to go. I may look into getting a tackle bag at some point. I know we have many members here who started with a tacklebox, way before the modern tackle bag was invented. What type of tackleboxes have you used over the years? Did you have any particular models that seemed to be better than others?
  3. Shimano Sienna spinning reel. Hard to beat for 30 bucks
  4. Spinnerbait and t rig plastic worm are up at the top too.
  5. I can't fish from usually mid to late November untill mid to late Febuary. Once things get started, I usually bank fish 2 or 3 times a week on weeknight trips. Launch the boat on weekend trips for half a day.
  6. I sometimes fish the smaller Zoom Critter Craw with a splitshot rig, when the water is clear. I used to like the Guido Bug years ago, this one is similiar, and makes a good jig trailer also.
  7. My two favourites have always been the Mr. Twister Phenom and the Culprit ribbontail. Sometimes the bigger Culprits work good weightless. These are both classic worms. You really can't go wrong with either one.
  8. I'll say Shimano for reels, Zoom for soft plastics, and Creme, for innovation years ago.
  9. I sometimes experiment, but after all these years, I stick with a few that work best. Through most of the season it's my plastic worms.
  10. Mostly always t rigged, slow hops on bottom
  11. Well said A-Jay. Use what works best for you, and Fish Hard!
  12. In my mid 20s, I belonged to a bass club. I remember being a little bit dismayed, and dissapointed when I saw that the best fisherman in this 25 member club carried a small two tray tacklebox. At that time, I thought ALL serious bass fisherman carried a giant tacklebox, filled with every bait possible. It took me a few years to realize that a huge box full of baits doesn't always mean a successful bass fisherman. Now, I carry less tackle than I ever did, and, my catch rates are as good, or better than they've ever been. Have any others here come to realize this too?
  13. I recently made a post about removing the old dried out grease from an old French made Mithcell 308 I've been working on. Thanks to the tips from all of you, I was able to remove all the old grease, and lube the reel with new grease. It worked out great. It's things like this that make me like BR so much. Thanks again!
  14. I did a side job for a guy in Blue Springs Mo installing a new storm door. Blue Springs Mo was the home of Mar Lynn bait company years ago. We started talking fishing, and it turns out he worked at Mar Lynn when he was in high school. He had boxes of 2" Puddle Jumpers in his garage and gave me several bags when I finished. Its always good to talk fishing with someone, and, you never know who you'll meet along the way. Agree. My wife usually finds something at yard sales, but I rarely do. I don't need any vases, dishes, or flower pots. I'm on the lookout for tools or fishing gear.
  15. 20 bags of Lucky Strike plastic worms in the clearance isle at Wal Mart for .25 per bag
  16. Fenwick HMG med/fast spinning rod for 40 dollars. Usually sells for 100 dollars. Huge box of assorted bass plastics( worms, tubes, grubs, craws, and creature baits) for ten dollars at a yard sale.
  17. Not sure. I've tried green pumpkin baits with poor luck, so have given up on the color. Purple and grape are old favourites here in Mo.
  18. I can't catch anything on green pumpkin. I like purple, blue, grape, and junebug. Watermelon/ red flake has worked at times also
  19. I think creature baits could work anywhere. In hot weather, target the shady areas, and throw them up under the docks if you can.
  20. A 3/8 or 1/2 oz single spin was my favourite night spinnerbait. I liked a dark skirt, #11 pork frog trailer, and a large copper blade.
  21. Mepps also has a weedless inline spinner with a Mr. Twister grub as a trailer. When the grub gets worn out, you can use almost any grub or a tail section of a plastic worm. These fish through weeds and wood much better than the treble hook models.
  22. I've never cut off a rod intentionally, but have replaced a tip on rods that broke. 2 " to 3" inches. Seems to stiffen the rod slightly.
  23. If you can, ditch the cheap inline spinners and buy some Mepps Black Fury, Panther Martin, or larger Rooster Tail spinners. They all work but the only time I can use them is in spring before the weeds get thick.
  24. My grandson got me started on Lews reels. Two years ago, Aiden bought a Lews G Spin at Academy for 39.95. I was impressed by the feel of this reel for the cost, so, I bought a Lews LFS casting reel. It's been a very good bass reel. Not too heavy, good casting distance, easy to set up, and smooth feel. This spring I picked up the black Lews Speed spin spinning reel. Some things I've noticed about Lews spin reels are that even the less expensive models have a thick bail wire, and all still have an AR switch , if you prefer one. They have a little different " feel" than Shimanos I've used, but they're smooth, have a wide drag adjustment, and good line lay on the spool. As for the Lews LFS casting reel, I'm convinced its one of the best reels you can buy for around 100.00 dollars. It has just enoupgh features to make it work well, which makes it easy to dial in. So far, I've enjoyed fishing these reels. I'll be sticking with them for a while. For the Lews reels folks here, what models are you using, and are you happy with them? I think they're a great value for the dollar.
  25. The only ABU reels I've got are old. 2 4600c casting, and one Cardinal 4 spinning. One 4600c is 24 yrs old. These have been great reels. I still run one 4600c, but have moved on to Shimano for spinning, and Lews and Qauntum for casting. I havnt fished any of the newer ABUs.
