That Weird Purchase That Makes Life a Little Better
Someone needs to figure out how to make one of these that would serve as a push poll and a lure retriever. Shouldn't be hard to do unless the push poll is too heavy.

Trickster Wanna Be
They look great. I’ve noticed all of the great spinnerbait fisherman do a lot of tinkering with their baits. Rick Clunn has done okay. I’ll add A-Jay to the list of great tinkerers.

Transducer question
The following links to Humminbird’s website states ”Testing your transducer while out of the water can damage the transducer, the unit or both.” and in another place “..it is not recommended to test your product in this manner. Doing so can damage the sonar circuit in your unit. This would not be covered under warranty.” If it caused immediate damage, mine would have been fried long ago. https://www.humminbird.com/support/faqs/DepthReadings https://www.humminbird.com/support/faqs/OutOfWaterReadings

Ambassadeur c4 vs Revo Beast vs Cardif A
I’ve seen that term used before. I do think a few of their reels like the C3 are made there. Tackle Warehouse says “Made In Sweden” on 5 round models.

@WRB you said what it better than I can. There is a difference between a brand and a company. I have some Abu reels that my grandfather owned. I don’t use them but I pull them out occasionally and admire them. I don’t think the Abu Garcia heritage is completely dead. I know some of the old style reels are still made in Sweden. People tend to be very brand loyal when they should be loyal to the people that built the brand. The new owners of Pure Fishing are under no obligation to maintain the Swedish tradition of Abu Garcia.

And I’m not suggesting that everyone should make their purchasing decisions the same way I do. I just hope that the CEO of the company that made the product I’m fishing with likes to fish. In most cases I have no idea who the CEO is or what they like to do. I know Lew Childre and Forest Wood liked to fish when they were running their companies and I know it made a huge difference in the quality of their products.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying everything made by Pure Fishing is bad. The new owners might be the best thing that has happened to the company. It just troubles me when a company I love is bought and turned into a brand. It doesn’t always end badly. Humminbird has changed owners several times and they are making the best products in their history in my opinion. But to answer your question, I avoid all of the brands you listed for these reasons with the exception of their fishing line brands.

Shimano is a company with a long history of building quality innovative reels. Abu Garcia was a company with a similar history that was bought by Pure Fishing which was bought by the company that makes Rubbermaid products and was recently sold to a company whose greatest success is in Cold Water Creek women’s clothing stores. History is important to me so I buy my reels from Shimano and my panties from Cold Water Creek. ?

Anyone throw Pink Worms or baits as a first choice or consistently?
Works in Tennessee also.

Can I run a sonar unit without the transducer connected?
I don’t know what brand you have but you should have a demo mode. The Huminbird demo mode gives you recorded data so you can learn all the functions and see maps and sonar readings while you learn the controls.

No problem man. We all enjoy a good can of worms. It's what gets us through the winter. Good discussion!

What would you change?
It's a good idea but you're gonna make a lot of sponsors VERY unhappy ?.

I would use a points based scoring system that rewards catching bigger fish. I like the fact that there's not a limit in MLF but I think it encourages numbers over size. Every angler values a ten pound bass more than ten one pound bass but in MLF they count the same. Here are two possible scoring systems. 1) For each fish you get one point for each ounce over one pound. A 10 lb fish would be worth 144 points. A 2lb fish would be worth 16 points. 2) Take it even further and square the weight of the fish in factional pounds. A 10lb fish would be worth 100 points. A 2lb fish would be worth 4 points. A 1.5 pound fish would be worth 2.25 points. A 1 pound fish would be worth 1 point.

@MIbassyaker you made a lot of good points. It seems like every thread that mentions Buck Perry becomes a thread about Buck Perry. That say's a lot about his influence on the sport all these years later. I would say generally, Buck presents a model of Bass behavior and movement. His model is far from perfect but can be used to find quality bass. It doesn't explain why all of the fish in the lake are doing what they are doing but we don't need for it to. We can't catch all of the fish in the lake. If we can just locate and catch a few of the bigger fish in the lake on a given day, it's a good day. Buck Perry's book can help.

Yeah... I guess you're right. Let me try to explain my thinking on Buck Perry. Buck Perry's teaching have had a profoundly positive impact on my fishing. I know that much in his book has been proven wrong by science. I can learn from the things in the book that are true. I can reject the things in the book are not. I do not have to accept or reject the man's teachings in their entirety. I've known people that felt like they have to accept it in its entirety. Those people have been well served in their devotion to his teaching. You are better off accepting all of it than rejecting all of it IMO. That's why I highly recommend the book. Explaining why I think reading the book is important would take more words than I'm able to type right now. It even goes beyond structure fishing.

I know guys that are rabid Buck Perry followers. They believe that if Buck said it, it has to be true. I think those people lack critical thinking skills and are naive. That said, they were always the ones I was worried about when I competed against them in tournaments.

I agree with A-Jay's choices but not his source. You can get used versions on amazon but they are usually not much cheaper. You can get a new copy direct from https://www.bucksspoonplugs.com/ or from the same folks through ebay with cheaper shipping depending on your location. Compare the cost of the book plus shipping on all three sources to get the best deal. Buck Perry is a must read for any serious fisherman IMO. Pursuit of Giant Bass by Bill Murphy is also good and based on many of the same concepts.

Do longer rod butt ends help left handled casting reel users?
I usually wait till Friday to switch from last weeks left /right hand thread to the latest left/right hand thread but I'll make an exception. I don't know what the person who told you this was talking about. Maybe if the handle was really long, it might get in the way as you switch hands. I cast with my right hand and use left hand reels for slow retrieve baits keeping the rod in my right hand. For fast retrieves I use right hand reels and switch hands after the cast. I have long handles on all of my rods. The long handle is more important to me on fast retrieves because I'm holding it against my forearm or my side for leverage against the pull of the lure. That would be the case if I cast with left and switched to my right so I don't see the issue. For some reason this reminds me of a time I was playing golf with some buddies. We had a guy convinced that his slice was due to the fact that he was hitting right handed balls with a left handed driver.

Amazon coming to Nashville is all well and good but the really big news just came out today. Icee is moving from LA to the Nashville area. I LOVE ICEEs. Especially when you swirl cherry and cola flavors together. https://www.bizjournals.com/nashville/news/2019/02/27/icee-leaves-california-brings-hq-to-middle.html

What’s your favorite style reel seat, Spinning Rod.
I'm with @Mobasser. The Lew's Graphite Tennessee Handle was a great rod. Still have five of them and managed to get one on ebay a couple of year ago for $280. I've worn out, lost, or broken the three heavy action rods I used to have. They were classic rods. I may have to move on soon.
