  1. Wine experts can taste the same exact wine on 3 different days and rate it different every time according to tests I've seen. I've only used cheap rods so far and I only drink cheap wine unless someone else is paying.
  2. I don't like to talk about how awesome I am - that's for other people to decide. I could be a jerk for all I know But I did have one cool experience so far. I got my truck stuck in a hole, my rear wheel sunk so far that my differential hit the ground. It was 100 degrees, not many people around. It was a dirt road along the Stanislaus River here in Cali. I had a puny jack and a small chunk of 4x4 wood I keep in the truck for whatever reason. I jacked it up nowhere near enough to get it out. Walked up the road half a mile and some guy let me borrow another similar jack. I used the two jacks and slowly inched the truck up, but still, this wasn't enough. I started filling in the hole under the tire when two trucks came up the road. I was hot and miserable. Sweat stinging my eyes. First guy kinda glanced at me and drove on. The second guy was Gary. This guy pulls up "Hey want me to pull you out?" "Dude hell yes" He yanked me outta that hole no problem. What a miserable day it was until then. I guess that isn't a great story but I already typed it Plus these days you can't hear enough stories about good people I think. Too much hate, not enough Gary's!
  3. How about to train a dog not to mess with lures you take an old big lure, remove the hooks, add a 9-volt battery with a couple wires on it. Lay it on deck by your gear. Dog sniffs or grabs lure and get's a mild shock. Once, maybe twice is all it would take I'll bet, depending on the intelligence of the dog. Reinforce it with commands. I'm actually half-serious and I don't think it's cruel at all. I am a big-time dog lover (except yappers) You can lick a 9-volt and it doesn't hurt. I wanna take a dog fishing and she learns very fast. Been thinking about this issue. The other issue is that (so I hear) she will chase casts into the water haha. But I can train her not to do that. She's very smart and may not need such training, but I would want to be certain that she won't grab one, as much as I can be. Just a thought. Any other ideas? ETA: I mentioned this to the dogs owner recently. She thought it was interesting. I thought she'd think it was bad but she said, "Oh like a shock collar" Shock collars can be very mild and she's used one to reinforce her commands at the dog park when she first took her. It's so mild it feels like a finger touching your shoulder. My friend would NEVER hurt this dog. She loves her more than me. But the dog loves me almost as much as her so it's okay
  4. Not necessarily...he also sells bull semen http://www.yamamotogenetics.com I saw an interview on I think a Googan video awhile back. He's raising Japanese beef here in the states, if I remember correctly. They fished his private pond and he talked about it. Come and get it
  5. I've run across some real jerks. I guess they aren't on this forum Of course we are all great drivers too, according to us! I usually fish alone, not always by choice. I welcome anyone who comes along and I will share my spot.
  6. 30-50 boats on a 100 acre lake sounds insane. If those numbers are accurate - well has the bass population diminished over the years?
  7. First time I tried skipping was a crank bait. Miserable failure. Second time was a Zoom Super Fluke T-rigged. Pretty easy to get it to skip. I just pretended I was skipping a rock. If the water isn't super smooth don't bother. I used a spinning reel.
  8. I take it on a case by case basis, depending on how the other guy is acting (in general situations in life). I normally start off cool. I was fishing off my dads dock once. There is a weekly bass tourney there - just a four hour shootout. I was just screwing around. It was almost dark (tourney is from 6-10 pm). They clearly saw me as they trolled near me. I was casting a popper. Sometimes I stop when I see tourney guys wanting to fish my dock but I didn't this time. One guy decided to cast directly on top of my bait. Like within one foot, and he knew it. I didn't say a word, I was shocked for a moment. Total *******. I shook my head and continued. He pulled in his bait and they trolled along. Ten seconds later I caught a nice bass and I let them know it - I was very excited, it was my first LMB ever. That was my first ever encounter with a tournament of any kind. It left a bad impression. Be polite or tick off. I don't care what your name is or how much you want to win. I'll be in that tourney this year and I'll remember what the guy looks like. Can't wait to beat him again I think Latimer could have been a little cooler, but he wasn't an ass about it.
  9. That's how I feel about television, but then one could say that about almost any entertainment. How many people watch sit-coms for three hours every night? Sit staring at Facebook? Gotta git me sum Third Rock! Word. Even a lot of the Googan vids are better (or no worse) than most TV shows, and don't forget the commercials you have to sit through to watch them. Flair is way too hyper for me but given the choice of watching him or almost any TV show, TV will lose. Some of my Favs - Greg Blanchard - Roland Martin - Scott Martin when he's actually fishing and not blabbing. He's getting worse lately. - Some even smaller local channels. - Brendan Miller. Quirky funny kid who loves to fish. - Tactical Bassin'. Almost too much information - I space out sometimes.
  10. I almost bought a Shadow Caster on CraigsList. It just seemed too heavy to drag around for me. But it was a beast as far as stability goes. Watched a lot of videos before the CL post disappeared. Just drove 20 miles to a kayak place. Website said they'd be open They weren't. I knew I should have called.
  11. Thanks everyone for the replies. I have not used a kayak. Definitely need to try it first. I do sit a lot in a position similar to that of a kayak though. I have a low chair at home. Sitting, casting, and holding myself steady will all require use of my back. I think with my back issues I can do it, but won't know until I try. I've even played with a fishing rod while sitting in my chair at home to see how it would feel to cast. I don't know if paddling would help or hurt it. When I work a lot and my back is strong I don't have too many issues. Comes and goes. But it's my main concern with a yak. I looked up some DIY options for foot controls. Some could be as simple as an on/off switch. Say I get a bite, I can have it already in reverse and hit a switch to get moving. But just having the motor at all will solve most of my problems. I will check out all the links you guys supplied in few hours. My other option is an aluminum V-hull, tricked out like a bass boat. I want to do that too, but I think a yak will get me on the water sooner, and more frequently. Maybe I'll go to store today and see if I can demo a few somehow.
  12. Now I'm thinking instead of a foot controller (expensive) I could rig up the existing foot pedal/rests to steer the motor - I've seen people do this. Then I'd just need a foot switch for speed, or at least to turn the TM on and off. I could rig that up I think.
  13. Looking to possibly get a yak. My issues are lower back problems off and on, and tendontis that I am working on but it's a slow process. I don't want to paddle too much. I can't afford a pedal drive. I'm thinking I could get say a Predator MX and put a trolling motor on it. This would hopefully limit, if not almost eliminate my need to use a paddle. Is this a realistic expectation? A foot pedal TM would be best so I could operate it hands free while I fish too. In this way it would be even better than pedals as I could also steer. I don't know how much a TM with such a pedal would cost yet. I've watched a ton of Youtube about trolling mounts, batteries etc. for different yaks, so I'm somewhat familiar with the whole idea. Are there any problems with this? I know I will need to paddle sometimes but I'd like to rely on the TM for most of it. Thanks!
  14. Greg Blanchard has a great channel. I've seen him and his buddies in some bad chop before when he was concerned. Clear Lake I think. I was surprised he launched in this latest video, but he wants to deliver content to his fans. Good move by Greg to turn around. Sometimes you don't know until you try I guess.
  15. When I started fishing last year one thing that motivated me were videos on Youtube. I quickly bored of the hyper kids, but at the same time the enthusiasm some of them show made me excited to fish. Some of them do enjoy fishing. Greg Blanchard has an excellent kayak fishing channel. He fishes in almost every video, whether he catches or not, and not much BS. I don't watch vlogs, gawd how boring. I like watching some of the fishing contests and challenges, but not all of it. Mainly who can catch the most fish, stuff like that. I'm not interested in watching the Googans play basketball though. Roland Martin has a Youtube channel - how awesome is that? I can watch him not fish, he's entertaining no matter what. He fishes from his Jon Boat sometimes with a homemade plywood deck and sitting on an ice chest lol. Love it! I even have a channel, along the lines of "I'm learning to fish, come laugh at/with me" I just think it's fun and a good use for my otherwise unused GoPro. Plus I want my greatest catches on video, screw photos!
  16. Throw out a humongous saltwater swim bait just to make people wonder.
  17. I use 14 pound mono but I probably don't know what I'm doing and have yet to get bit with a jerkbait I do wonder if it stretches too much for good action, or if I'm doing it hard enough for the amount of line in the water. I will try braid on this reel next.
  18. Or having them do it before you wake up. Pick your poison. I hate when it gets dark at 5:00. Who does that help? Criminals? Car accidents during rush hour?
  19. For your cigar to ignite gasoline you would have to have a very hot cherry and be pretty much unconscious from the fume concentration. Even then it probably wouldn't ignite. Pretty unlikely in a boat. Lighting the cigar with an open flame could do it, but again, you'd smell the gas and would probably be unconscious already. You can extinguish a cigarette in a glass of petrol. Do your own research of course, but I wouldn't worry about it one bit.
  20. Got a link? I can't find anything under $5 on their site. Not sure saving $5 is worth being screwed one day when your cheap scissors break on the water.
  21. This. Be upfront, get the knowledge you need and fish stress free. No surprises.
  22. I'm pretty new to fishing. I can remember two instances where I dropped fish after grabbing the line - one I lost at shore but retrieved, the other that fell on the dock. Didn't actually lose either. I have both of these on video and I think thats what happened. I will look at them and see. Interesting.
  23. I went this week and nothing I bought was on sale!!! Idiot. I wanted some jigheads for Ned rigs but the BPS version was all sold out and I'm cheap. I'll try again.
  24. I've barely been fishing a year so I don't have many stories. BUT a few days ago I got a jerkbait stuck in a small offshore "tree" and I put a lot effort into getting the stupid $4 hunk o' plastic back, including chucking a bunch of rocks at it. Oh ya and I have it on video so you don't even have to read it! I don't know how to embed videos here, so here is a Youtube link. I'm not making money off my little channel so not trying to spam. The whole video is just me fighting with this lure, except maybe the first 60 seconds of it. (7:34 video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q71GGKtgHxY&t=3s Oh ya, my new Lady President reel is also seen in the video - if anyone saw my thread about that. It's pink but it's a d**n nice reel!
  25. Never used a guide. Not yet. For me it might depend on a few things. Is the guide the owner of the business? If so I see no need to tip, UNLESS he goes way out of his way somehow. Then maybe. I like to tip when it is deserved. If it is not the owner running the boat then I will feel more sympathetic, as I don't know how well these guys are paid. But if the guide is also the owner (maybe they usually are) then I feel they have priced it according to how much they feel they deserve, period. I went on a snorkeling trip one day in Hawaii. The guides took us into some cool spots and I tipped them. They also did not own the business so I had no way of knowing if they were properly compensated. Everyone has their own criteria. I'd be happy if tipping was not a thing at all. Everyone wants a tip these days. I even saw one at a drive-thru window in my town. I do tip well at restaurants and that kind of thing, but I don't consider it my responsibility to help the owners of a business underpay their staff.
