new spinnerbait set up question
I think your "set-up" doesn't have any "give" in it. I like a little(or more) softness when I'm fishing mooving baits (crancks, spinners, buzzers ,etc). The reason is the way bass inhales its prey : opens its mouth realy fast sucking in the prey and water at the same time; then closes its mouth and opens its gills and gets rid of the water. Most of the times a bass will attack it's prey from the side or below, sometimes from behind. There has to be a moment when the trajectory of the bait is changed allowing to be sucked in the mouth of the fish. That moment is created by the "give" in the rod and line. You don't need sensitivity for spinnerbaiting. I bet that guys fishing fast/ X-fast rods will feel a couple more "attacks" but I also think they miss a lot of them. I tryed Fenwick HMG, Shimano clarus, Cabelas in 6-6 MH , and ended up using a BPS graphite( $19.99 in sale). I am thinking of getting a KVD Spinnerbait rod( wich is even softer; I should of bought it when BPS had it in clearance ) Overall , the ideal SB rod for me would be 6-6 MH power, mod-fast action(or maby moderate action ???). Just my $.02

Wellcome ! I am a multi-species guy too, but it looks that lately Iam kinda drifting more towards BASS fishing. Lots of good guys with great info to share on this site. Tight lines

What's you favorite
The whole fun /science/challenge is in locating the targeted species of fish. Making them bite is easy with all the techniques/baits availeble today. Setting the hook is no big deal. Reeling them in might present some challenges. The fun is in the hunt, not in pulling the triger !!! My $.02

Drop Shot'n With Super Lines
It's been discussed on a couple other posts regarding rod sensitivity/ sensitive lines/ favorit lines to use with different techniques/ high end rods/ etc/ etc and I posted that for applications that requires great sensitivity I prefer a mid range rod($50-100) paired with braid and fluoro leader instead of going high end rod ($300 & up) with mono/copoly/fluoro. I fished with my friends Loomis & fluoro and I didn't feel it gave me anything above my set-up ( older Daiwa rod & Power Pro). At this moment I don't see justified to spend over $100-150 on a rod. There's plenty of sensitivity by using braided lines.

Help with new rod suggestion
Good suggestions so far. I would ad Fenwick HMX. At about $80, they are great rods. Take a look at Shimano Clarus or Compre; and thumbs up to All Star and Falcon rods

Knots
The same, if the Rapala knot is the one I know as "Loop Knot", and the improved Clinch is the same with the Trilene knot. Sometimes I'll use the "loop" on crancbaits, too

Looking for a Nice reel.
You might want to look at some baitcasters...

Spinning rod advice!
The 1500 Symetre balances out nicely a 6-6 med-light power, fast or x-fast action. I use 2500 size spinning reels for bass fishing whitch I pair with 7' med/fast or x-fast. Oh, go with Crucial or All Star. You could look into Fenwick, Daiwa, Falcon too. They make great rods in that price range.

Is this wrong?
I try not to outright lie, but I do my best to avoid giving out usefull info. If a guy in a nice bass boat comes close and asks me "how's fishing" I'll tell him about the crappies i cought last week, about where to look for catfish, about all the perch I got, "but unfortunately they were on the small side", about the pods of big carp cruseing in the weeds, etc, etc. By that time he's fired up his big engine and is headed towards the other side of the lake. If a dad and kids are strugling to gatch something, i'll point them in the right direction.

X-Mas Rod Help
I am 6'3" and I like longer rods too. I think a 7' M F or XF is a good choice. Try BPS or cabelas, they have good deals on their branded rods (BPS Extreme @ $65).Also look in their "clearane" stuff. Good luck.

Practiced baitcasting yesterday
Great accomplishment! I suggest you look at some "$100+" reels in Dec, Jan or Feb : might find something in clearance @ $50-80. You will be glad you upgraded. It makes a lot of difference with lighter weights. Try using the Shakespeare with 3/16 or 1/4 oz bait/"practice weight", you will see what I mean. Or you could find some good deals on this forum, if you don't mind buying something used. Keep at it !

Line for drop shotting
I am not doing a lot of dropshotting. Due to the fact that the rod I'm using is not one of the high end/pricy, X-fast ,super sensitive, I use 15lb Power Pro with 6-8ft Seaguar fluorocarbon leader. Works for me

bionic baitcaster?
I have one BPS Extreme, use it for 2 seasons. Works good so far, but I havent used it a lot ( I kind of prefer to use my Daiwas) A decent baitcaster starts @ about $100; anything a lot cheaper (unless it's a sale/clearance) it's no worth spending your money on it. Just my $.02

Good all around rod for less than 100$$???
"All arround" rod for bass fishing. There is no such thing.Deppends what kind of bait/lurre he likes to fish mostly. If I'd have to pick one single rod to take with me to an unknown lake, it would be 6'-6" MH power, fast action. It would be tough to fish fast mooving baits /treble hook lures. Definitely difficult to cast light lures, but good with 1/4-1/2 oz baits(plastics, jigs); slow presentation. Some spinnerbait, buzzers, "light" frogging.... Most reputable brand make good rods at that price range.Fenwick, St Croix, Daiwa, Shimano, Falcon,All Star,etc.....Just try to find the best deal. Does he have a "favorit" brand ???? Shimano guys like Shimano tackle, Daiwa guys like Daiwa tackle...you know what I mean !!! Good luck
