  1. Can you explain? Should a rod not load up at all if you are doing medium distance casts? I feel when fishing squarebills, you are mostly doing short to medium casts into cover...that's when accuracy comes into play. I understand time and practice will help...just trying to learn from all of you
  2. Ridiculous question...it's obviously a hooded 7 iron cut shot...could do it in my sleep ? I would love to spend more time on the water!! Believe me...but at this stage in my life...I can't I'm not asking you to pick a rod for me. I'm just asking, is it normal to have a xf rod load easier than a moderate rod when using a light squarebill? I understand the moderate rod is the typical way to go when throwing crankbaits, but when throwing the light squarebils last night...I had a hard time getting the 705cb to load when throwing short to medium range casts. Now when I switch to a heavier bate, like a lipless or 3xd, that thing performs flawlessly.
  3. jacob wheeler fishing a small crankbait I believe. Any idea what tip/action this looks like? He barely moved his arm...did a very simple roll cast and was able to get the rod to load. What type of rod is needed to do this?
  4. Ok, this may not make much sense, but I was out in my yard last night testing a new rod. I am trying to find a good squarebill rod and unfortunately I just don't have the time to go to the lake to try it out right now. So I was in my yard comparing a few rods. I put a light 1.0 squarebill on 4 rods (dobyns 705cbMH/F, avid x 7M/F, expride 6'6M moderate/fast, and an Avid X 6'8 M/XF). The dobyns is my main crankbait rod, the Avid 7M is my general moving bate rod, and the avid 6'8 is my jerkbait rod. I was thinking the expride would do pretty well since it was so light and the moderate action would help with keeping them pinned. But when I went to throw the light squarebills, the only one that I could consistently get a smooth and accurate cast was from the jerkbait extrafast rod. It seemed like the more flexible tip allowed for it to load easier and took less effort. I was able to throwi all of them pretty accurately, but with the rods other than the xf tip rod, I had to throw a little more smoothly and almost guide the throw to not get backlash...the xf rod i was able to just do a simple roll cast. Does that make sense at all?? The reels were all pretty identical but I did have different line on some of them. So this weekend I'm going to try switching the reels around and verifying my results. I know accuracy isn't everything, but it is nice to have confidence in your rod and know that what lure you are throwing, it can be presented in the way you want. Do my results make sense or do you think something had to be off with my setup?
  5. I'm confused...I thought people preferred fluoro because it sinks and braid doesn't sink...so by using fluoro you can get another foot or two of depth. I would also think that fluoro would get down to depth faster.
  6. Which expride for squarebills? Some say glass and some say not to go with glass due to how it doesn’t deflect as well off of wood. Which rod in the expride lineup would you choose?
  7. Tackle trap has 20% off on lots of st croix rods
  8. What were you trying to use it for? Think it would work good for squarebills?
  9. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with either of these rods and if so, what were your thoughts. I'm looking to get one of these as a squarebill and multi-use rod. I have a gift card to cabela/bps and these two have peaked my interest. Thanks for the help!
  10. Cool so your vote is for the zodias 6'10" MH? I think it's interesting that you are using the MH for squarebills and the M for medium diving crankbaits. Mind sharing why? I would have thought it would be the opposite. I guess I am leaning towards the zodias, but I have an expride spinning and absolutely love it...so I tend to want to trust the expride. But I haven't seen anyone review that particular rod and not sure how it will do with squarebills.
  11. So my staff game me a pretty sizable gift card to cabela/bps. I'm thinking of getting a squarebill rod with it. I'm looking on their site and they unfortunately don't have a lot of the names mentioned here. But they still have several that would work well I believe. Here are my top 4. Which do you think I should go with? Also would love to get some ideas for secondary use for the rod when not using squarebill. 1. St Croix Avid X AXC68MHF 2. Shimano Expride EX166MA 3. Shimano Zodias ZDS1610M 4. Shimano Zodias ZDS1610MH Thanks
  12. So do you have a rod you really love throwing light squarebills on? Sounds like you are still searching
  13. Well that didn’t help lol so do you like them? Have you tried the glass versions?
  14. Also, has anyone used the Shimano Zodias? Thanks
  15. How many rods do you have??! That would be really cool to live close to there...would be more st croix devoted as well if that were me.
  16. Hey, just curious when everyone’s favorite brand is. Are you brand loyal when it comes to looking for a particular rod or just go with whatever is best for that application? I am a little OCD about keeping things the same but it’s hard to do that when you’re looking for a particular rod for a particular lure/application. I love st croix, but Dobyns, megabass, and shimano exprides are hard to resist.
  17. Tungsten. I usually put a glass bead on as well.
  18. How do you fish them? Do you just fish them like normal or change it up to target bigger bass?
  19. Have you had a chance to try your expride? I’m looking to purchase more of those. I picked up a spinning 7’ and love it. For short frog rod, I’m going to try the tatula elite skipping rod but had the expride on the list. I’m thinking about getting one for squarebill.
  20. Thanks again everyone. Always good to keep things in perspective
  21. Has anyone compared the 705cb with the 704cb? I wonder if the 704 would be a little better for light squarebills. Also, is a secondary technique to use your squarebill rod for? (Spinnerbait, lipless...)
