  1. The palomar produces such a small knot with fluro, which makes me question its overall strength. Maybe I'm doing it wrong or thinking too much.
  2. So i've been experimenting with knots that are fairly simple to tie. Something my son can learn. I was hoping to get votes on which you guys think is the best: 1. slip knot 2. palomar knot 3. uni knot Trust be told, I've had a few slip knots fail but it is also what I've used them most when I started out fishing. Palomar is very simple, but haven't tried it yet on the waters. The uni knot looks very durable as well, but again I haven't tried it yet while fishing. Thanks
  3. Congrats. These stories of you guys catching 20/30/40 fish on one trip has me feeling very jelly...
  4. If I get skunked, which happens a lot, I can only assume the fish were not there. At first I though I plain suck at bass fishing, but I've been to smaller ponds and were able to catch several fish. I tend to get skunked at bigger bodies of water because it is a lot harder to cover ground and I often stick to one bait for far too long.
  5. I was timid about buying my first baitcaster. Been using it for about 7 months now and prefer it everyday over spinning now. I have a lot more control over a baitcaster and all the cool guys are using them these days. I use spinning for super finesse stuff, but finds myself going right back to the BC. Each set up has it's place.
  6. Sorry this actually had me laughing a bit. I'm glad you are safe though. Btw, what was she throwing? My worst days on the water normally start with my son getting an expensive lure stuck and then finishes with him backlashing the crap out of his baitcaster. Normally, 4 hrs of fishing is cut down to about 2 hrs because of all this. Wouldn't trade if for the world though.
  7. Thanks for that. I'll let my son know all of this information and he can decide if he wants to keep it or not. His first baitcaster was an abu garcia black max combo, which he learned on. The reel is ok, but the rod feels like re-bar. He got the xt for christmas and now on to the the curado K. Probably the heaviest thing he throws is a baby bull shad. We are both living through youtube videos right now. Haven't dropped a line in over a month now. Major withdraws.
  8. How light are we talking? Would a weightless senko do ok or better for heavier jerkbaits and crank baits/jigs?
  9. Funny you say that. He was looking at a st. croix to pair the curado with. We have the dobyns fury 6ft6 on the slx, which is a great rod as well.
  10. Thanks for the feedback guys. My kid had several bass pro shop gift cards and bought the reel without really consulting with me. I guess he did some research on his own and pulled the trigger. He already has an slx xt, which he likes a lot. I was thinking of having him exchange the reel for the tatula 100 primarily for size. He has all this great gear, but can't get out on any lakes right now. So sad.
  11. For those that own this baitcasting reel, how do you like it so far. My son bought one for himself as a 10th b-day present. Was considering exchanging it for the tatula 100, but may end up keeping the shimano. He bought the 8.1 gear ratio model for some reason. Thanks for opinions. He doesn't have a rod for it yet so its still just sitting in the box.
  12. and I thought we are friends
  13. Given the current Covid-19 crisis, I'm curious if any lakes in your area are closing. Similar to golf courses, I would think lakes would be one of the best places to be in open air and automatic social distancing. I was talking to a local guide this morning and he thinks it is a real possibility here in California.
  14. My son has caught a few gluegills recently here and there, but not many since around June/August of last year. In the summer, literally they will bite everything and anything you throw into the water. The day I caught the trout, I saw some small LMB swimming by the boat rental area. They wouldn't bite anything, including a live nightcrawler.
  15. Anyone try those z man slingbladez yet?
  16. I think I have at least one of every type of bait except a spinnerbait. I'm looking for something under $10 that produces for you guys in small ponds/lakes. Thanks for any recommendations.
  17. Looks like all 3 have been recovered. So sad. https://www.wbir.com/article/news/state/body-recovered-from-tennessee-river-believed-to-be-1-of-3-missing-pickwick-lake-boaters/51-a0562005-4c7f-42db-b138-e141cfab6159
  18. I've been there a handfull of times. In the summer you can catch about 30 small bluegill. I've seen several bass caught out of there too, but only finesse baits work. I caught a trout there last week on a baby bull shad. I was floored.
  19. Catfish are fairly easy to catch, but are the last resort for me. They are just hard to look at let alone handle. Tough to say, but I'd rather just get skunked.
  20. What? you bought that rig for about $340? I'm floored. Thats cheaper than a driver my son plays. I better not show him this lol
  21. How safe are those kayaks and do both of you share one or each have your own? Unless you are fishing a very small lake/pond, the kayaks look sketchy with almost no room to maneuver. I've never been on one yet
  22. Luckily, or unlucky we don't really see those species at all around here. How about Carp or Talapia?
  23. Every time my son and I fish, we just gawk at the guys on the water in their boats, float tubes, kayaks, etc. I'm just curious how most of you guys started on the water? Did you start small and slowly graduate towards larger vessels? My son wants me to get a small boat that is easy to launch, safe, and requires very little maintenance but not sure we are ready for that yet.
  24. Might sound odd, but one of the most enjoyable parts of catching bass is being able to safely lip them after the catch? Just curious what are some of the other fresh water fish you shouldn't lip due to jaw structure or teeth etc? I know for sure you can't and shouldn't lip a trout. I've seen guys lip cat fish, but never want to try that.
  25. Glad you are back out there and fishing. A few weeks ago my son slapped me right on the face with a smaller swim bait as he attempted to set the hook close to shore. You should of seen the look on my face as I wiped my cheek to check for blood. Luckily it was a clean slap and the hooks didn't gouge me.
