  1. The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman. It chronicles in expansive detail the events leading up to the outbreak of World War I and the first month of the conflict. This month we just passed 103 years since the guns fell silent on 11/11/1918, and yet WWI left an indelible stamp on world history that still has an incredible impact on world events today. It’s a fantastic tome and I highly recommend it to anyone who either loves history, or wishes to learn how the world we live in today was forged in iron and blood over one hundred years ago.
  2. Thanks. My daughter got me that hat for my birthday in September. Wore it bowhunting when I killed a 5 pointer. I was born in 1960. I grew up watching some great Orioles teams. It’s been painful the last 20 years or so other than a couple seasons under Showalter. I saw the O’s beat the Phils in the WS in ‘83. I may not see another.
  3. Fished over four hours this morning. Two superdinks and this one. All on a 4” #956 Senko on a 3/0 EWG. No bites on anything else.
  4. Everything worked great. Except no bites lol.
  5. How soon do you need it? Academy can ship by 11/28-11/29. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/daiwa-aird-x-braiding-x-66-m-spinning-rod?sku=6-6-black-medium-fast
  6. I was too &^%#! to even think about it. It even warped the Plano box. Goo. Nuthin’ but goo!
  7. I learned not to accidentally put a Z-Man bait into a Plano with Senkos and Zoom Tricks. Whatta mess!
  8. I appreciate all the advice and suggestions. My 1/10 oz jig heads and baits arrived yesterday. I removed all the mono off the Revros 2000 except enough for backing and spooled it with 20 lb. Sufix 832. I had 130 yards on-hand and I’ve been pleased with it so far, so I decided to use it vs buying 10 or 15 lb. braid. I tied on a 7” leader with clear 6 lb. mono (Berkley XL, which I also had on-hand). I had 8 lb. but there’s not a lot of structure that would be an abrasion problem so I opted for the lighter leader. The St. Croix Bass-X MLXF and the Revros 2000 is now set up as my Ned rig combo. Got the jig head tied and ready to get it wet tomorrow morning. I set the drag a little light (2 lbs) but I’ll see how that goes. Looking forward to giving it a good test!
  9. For that $$, an Aird-X is hard to beat.
  10. Third for the Fury 705CB. Great for squarebills, lipless cranks, etc.
  11. Wow! I knew the Yock had some nice walleyes but that’s gigantic!
  12. If it’s on, I watch it. That, Tombstone and El Dorado/Rio Bravo. I love Westerns.
  13. Well, I’ll say the options other anglers use runs the gamut for sure. 10 lb., 15 lb., 20 lb. braid. 6 lb. or 8 lb. leaders, some straight braid, some straight mono or FC. Makes for an interesting game of what to choose lol. My jig heads and Z-Man baits arrive today. I plan on fishing the Ned heavy on Saturday. Just have to decide on the line. Decisions, decisions…
  14. Open Range. Costner and Duvall. One of the truest gunfights ever filmed. Except for Duvall’s shotgun blast lol.
  15. True. Lake trout and a chicken box are Baltimore staples. But it ain’t lake trout lol.
  16. The only rod I find unwieldy is my HF at 7’ 6”. And that’s in my inflatable. If I’m on the bank it casts like a dream. Any baitcasting rod around 7’ is in my wheelhouse.
  17. I see many using braid spool up with 10 lb. I’ve been using 20 lb. braid (diameter of 6 lb. mono). Do you use 10 lb. (or less) for a specific reason? More line on spool? Increased sensitivity?
  18. Jeff, last year I bought the first new rods in almost 30 years (save kid’s combos for my daughters). All my rods were less than 7’. Of my new ones, the spinning rigs are 6’ 6” to 6’ 10”, and the baitcasters are 7’ to 7’ 6”. I have no issues with any of them. Casting baits with a 7’ or longer baitcaster using two hands is much easier than the old pistol grip rods.
  19. Thanks for the comments. I was definitely leaning towards the Bass-X (as it’s a ML vs a M action) and that Revros 2000 is a nice reel. Just not sure about the line. I like mono and I like braid w/mono leader as well. Just not sure which way to go. I like the sensitivity of braid. But in shallow water, I like the way mono sinks more than braid. Just have to decide which feature offers more benefit.
  20. There are some that have already posted in this thread that have way more experience than I will ever have, so I’ll defer to their opinions. All I will add is that I don’t set the hook on a wacky rig. I simply lift the rod tip up 45° and reel in the slack and the fish sets the hook itself.
  21. lol. That is a Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1003 siren. Used to hear that every Monday at 1:00 pm in school. And these were on the auditorium walls. Boomer indeed!
  22. I have not had much success with a Ned rig, but that’s probably due to limited number of baits, only one size of mushroom jig heads and not spending enough time to give it a true test. I’ve placed an order for some lighter jig heads (1/10 oz) and various Z-Man baits. Now I need to set up a combo dedicated to fishing the Ned rig. I have three spinning rods available. A St Croix Bass-X MLXF; a Daiwa Procyon MXF and a Fenwick HMX MF (the Daiwa and Fenwick are 6’ 6” and the St. Croix is 6’ 10”). I have three reels: a Daiwa Revros 2000 and a 2500; and a Shimano Sienna 2500. Currently the Shimano is spooled with 20 lb. Seguar Smackdown with a 6 lb. mono leader and the Revros 2500 is spooled with 20 lb. Sufix 832 and a 6 lb. leader. The 2000 is straight 6 lb. mono. Which reel would you put on what rod, and what line(s)? I’m fishing ponds which are stained water (about 1’ visibility) and a maximum depth of 7’-8’. I was simply going to stay with the Bass-X and the Revros 2000, but spool it with 10 lb. braid with a 6 lb. mono leader. I like both the Sufix 832 and Seguar Smackdown but am open to options. All opinions are welcome, except for buying a new rod and reel lol. It won’t please the BM but that’s not an option at this point in time.
  23. That’s a day on the (cold) water right there!
  24. I have an Aird X MHF and a MF. I also have a Falcon Lowrider MHF and a Dobyns MHMF. They are used for different applications but all cast well. I was also going to doubt that it was the rod, but just saw the OP mention it was the brake setting, so there it is. I love my Falcon and Dobyns, but I still use my Aird X’s a lot.
