  1. Probably 42 years. When I was very young my dad would take me and my siblings to a paylake. After he died, a few years later, I was pretty much on my own so I fished from a bridge for bullheads. I didn't even use a pole. Just swung a spool of line with a garden worm baited hook and sinker into the deep holes and pulled the bullheads up. When I got my drivers license opportunities increased considerably. Still, it took a long time to really build up steam.
  2. The price wouldn't surprise me in the least if it was a required college text. Extortion.
  3. Don't you just love breaking a slump! Nice catch! And using a new technique, too! How sweet it is!
  4. Prior to this year (astonishingly I caught two six pounders), catching a five pound bass would've made me wonder what deal I must've made with the devil. And I've fished a lot of years.
  5. Glenn, Nice interview despite the potential language barrier. I could PM you on these questions but I thought others might be curious too: It appears you try to "stay with the script" in terms of what you ask and that you have a finite amount of time to complete an interview. I'm curious to know how that helps and hinders the interviewing process and what you do if someone strays off topic? It doesn't appear like there's much, if any, editing on these interviews. Also, although I don't know know how much freedom you have in the interviewing process, what, if anything, would you like to do different?
  6. It seems a code of ethics only works with people who give a darn. >:(There is, evidently, a certain percentage of folks who think that being in a tourney or have a fast, expensive boat gives them certain "entitlements." Fortunately, they are the exception rather than the rule. But like the one piece of trash that's thrown on a lawn, it's that trash that catches the eye rather than the other 99% of the lawn where there isn't garbage. "Garbage" is a good word for the folks you've described. I think I would've asked if they were finishing a tournament and, if they said yes, asked what the club/tourney was and who the president was. If they refused to say, a lot of lakes require tournaments to register and you could find out that way. Anyway, I wouldn't do anything unethical (though I'd be tempted) but I would make their actions be known to their peers.
  7. Holy Schneikies! That's one heck of a good haul! Nice going. I'm jealous.
  8. For awhile I liked using braid on my spinning gear but more recently I am finding I have as many problems (or more) than with mono. Don't know if it's too whispy or what but it tends to give me fits. But that might be the reel I was using too.
  9. An allowance? :-X (Sound of whip cracking) Just kidding....sort of.
  10. In most states, aren't parents responsible for the care and protection of their under age 18 children? I just wonder about the legality of the dads actions (or omission to act).
  11. Do the worms you use have a brighty colored tail? Or lots of tenacles? Bluegill are notorious for pecking at those. As an experiement, try a thicker bodied soft plastic that doesn't have any appendages. I can't guarantee the bass will hit it but at least it'll take away anything for bluegill to nibble on. And if you aren't hooking/catching anyway, what have you got to lose. Also, rather than going weightless, you might peg a bullet weight on it just to see how that configuration works out. Just a thought.
  12. except for using frogs/rats in lilly pads or slop, and with the exception of early mornings and evenings, about the only time I use a topwater is when it's overcast. I rarely use topwaters on bright days in the summertime. There are always exceptions but not many.
  13. When you say you hear scratchy/crackling noises, it suggest to me that there are loose/shorting wires with some arcing going on somewhere inside the "control module". That would explain why the unit is cutting out intermittently. Check that. It might be an "easy" fix. Just a thought.
  14. I give the toad shot a blue ribbon!
  15. You can hardly go wrong with a small floating Rapala.
  16. Update: Can't say for certain it was the same bass but tonight, in the same area as before, a larger bass stole my rapala from a smaller bass. There seems to be a crime spree in the neighborhood!
  17. I'm surprised no one has commented on this. Well, I will. Pretty funny! I especially like the leaning chair one. Those moments when you're pretty sure you're going to fall backwards but are even more convinced that if you make any effort to prevent it, it's a sure thing you will. So you just kind've "hang in space" anticipating whatever is going to happen next. Sort've slow motion like.
  18. A friend of mine lives in Neoga. Nothing much usually happens there so I guess it has been quite a stir. You have to hand it to the kids, though. Pretty funny/creative.
  19. Ditto. Is that a Spongebob bandaid on her forehead? That's what all the stylish fishergirls are wearing these days.
  20. It still amazes me how different their attitude was toward the bass popper and how badly the one bass wanted to steal the tiny morsel (bluegill popper) from the bluegill. Seems he could've eaten 3 or 4 small bluegill in that timeframe. They were everywhere.
  21. Funny site but why did the creators choose to use a gray font over a duct tape background? A major pain to read! Silence is golden. Duct tape is silver.
  22. Unless, of course, you fall into the trap of becoming a slave to your job for the sake of a lot of money. Like most things, there is a law of diminishing returns with money. I've found that throughout my life I've either had plenty of money but little time. Or plenty of time and little money. Sigh! Oh, for a happy medium! But if Ohio feels like home to you, than welcome home!
  23. You're daughter knows a good fisherman when she sees one. Good story!
  24. The other day I was out at my favorite pond. I could see bass swimming lazily about but could not convince any of them to bite my standard offerings. After awhile I gave up (or almost did). There were tons of bluegill around so I got out my fly rod. Before I tied on a bluegill popper, I decided, what the heck, I'd tie on a large bass bug. It didn't take any time at all before I landed and released 5 bass. They behaved as though they'd never seen an artificial bait in their lives. No trepidation or hesitation whatsoever. Eventually the action slowed so I decided to tie on the smaller popper for the bluegill I'd originally expected to pursue. Almost immediately I hooked an average size bluegill. As it spun and cartwheeled around, a nice bass came out of nowhere. It began chasing the bluegill around-more or less right in front of me. At first I thought it was pursuing the bluegill and wondered why it was waiting so long to gobble it up. But after 7 or 8 turns I realized it was trying to steal the popper out of the bluegills mouth. Apparently, there was enough of the hook point sticking out that it snagged the bass' mouth and for a few seconds I had two fish on my 5-weight flyrod. The bass quickly shook himself loose but not before destroying my popper. Although I've heard of bass trying to steal bait away from another fish, I never witnessed it before then. It refused to quit until it got hooked. Hungry/greedy/lazy beggar!
  25. 1) Floating Rapala-minnow pattern 2) Panther Martin spinner (better than Roostertail IMO because they always spin). 3) Super Fluke or Fluke Jr 4) Senko or other stickbait 5) Manns 1 minus and 5 minus crankbait 6) Brush Hog or baby Brush Hog
