  1. My thoughts exactly. Although it would be quite remarkable for a novice to make a safe landing regardless of type, a commercial jet gobbles up considerably more runway than a little Cessna or Archer. To borrow from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, you'd have a better chance at playing pick up sticks with your butt cheeks than landing a Boeing, Lockheed, or Airbus. ;D
  2. You mean the world actually existed in color back then? That blows my whole schema! These photo's are great! It sorta gives folks a different persona when you see them in color photo's. More humanizing, I think. They certainly don't look so grim. Of course it didn't help that no one ever smiled in group or family photo's.
  3. Perhaps I've watched War of the Worlds one too many times but, assuming there is life out there, what's to say it's "benevolent?" I mean, do we really want to be sending messages out into space that says, "Hey, look at us!" Might as well be saying "We taste delicious with a side of mayo."
  4. This is good advice, common sense and common courtesy, and also, personal responsibility. Even if you've never been discourteous on the water or damaged lake property, there are those that have and couldn't care less, and the homeowners have to deal with it, so I can understand why some owners don't want people fishing their dock. Put yourself in their shoes. One time on the lake fishing docks, I spoke to a homeowner that was dragging his boat lift onto shore to replace a nice cover that had a 6 foot gash in it, and a big Poe's square-bill crank still hanging from the edge of the tear. The man claimed that he watched an angler snag it and make hooksets to free his lure. The crank ripped though 6 feet of fabric before his line broke. The whole time, the angler knew that the owner was watching him, and raced away right afterwards, doing a holeshot 30 feet from the dock. After an incident like this, that whole neighborhood is going to hear about it, and you might get a glare or even subtle actions to chase you away, such as walking somewhat loudly out to the dock to grab something, turning on the submerged water pump to water the lawn until you move away, etc. That just goes with the territory, so I try to be congenial to these folks, making small talk and offering accurate advice on what they're biting on or how to catch fish from their dock. I have smoothed a few ruffled feathers this a gift of 2 or 3 Senkos. As a rule, regarding the property of others, I treat it as good or better than I would my own. In general, I personally don't care about little blemishes on things, but they might, so I don't fish close to their boats with hard lures that might chip or dent boats and motors, instead opting for Senkos and light-wire tube jigs that I can free if snagged. I certainly stay away from childrens toys or inflatables, and more often than not, I completely bypass properties where it appears people are frequently in the water. I choose to look at it like it was my boat cover, my dock, my $3000 floating trampoline, or my daughters foot that might need a hook yanked from it. Someone might come by and catch a big fish from that trampoline later, before they leave their crank hanging from the ladder, but that's fine by me, there are plenty of fish. I did my part that day and left the lake with nothing to be ashamed of. Agreed. People from nearly every walk of life like to believe "their" own kind are better than average. Same goes with fishermen. But there are too many who don't give a rip about property rights (or ethical behavior at all for that matter). Just look at how many empty, discarded styrofoam worm containers you find on the shore and that ought to tell you something! I'm not a dock owner but I still keep a close eye on my boat when it's parked anywhere where others can get near it. It's the same as if I had it tied to a dock.
  5. I own a '99 Honda Civic with 148,000 miles on it and apart from a oxygen sensor going bad and a worn out window regulator (hand cranked windows), I've had to replace nothing except standard wear and tear parts (brake pads, belts, exhaust system). I did just recently replace the timing belt and water pump but that was just proactive steps to avoid more serious damage later). Even my battery had 140 thousand miles on it before I deemed it wise to replace (before winter sets in). You won't regret your decision.
  6. I used to fly frequently but my arms sure got tired. : Seriously though, unless you're flying with an african or eastern european airline, you're considerably safer on a plane than you are driving to and from the airport.
  7. You should have walked her over to the lawn mower, placed her hands firmly on the handle, and said, "Get too it!" Unless you are omitting certain important details, my initial impression of your significant other isn't a very good one.
  8. I think I was dropping it too quickly. I'll try slowing it down. I'll try heavier mono too. Thanks.
  9. Hmmm....Nope! Didn't find any landmarks that might tip off this location. Otherwise, it would've been time for a ROAD TRIP!!!!! Those were some seriously nice bass dude!!! What a day that must've been!
  10. What were using as a trailer on that spinnerbait- Crystal Meth? 'Cause that's what this bass looks like she's (otherwise) hooked on. Either that or she's bulimic. Time for some sort of intervention!
  11. How about ice fishing.... Agreed. I'm not one for tipups (am not very good at multi tasking) but with a decent flasher, ice fishing doesn't have to be boring. If you are willing to move around and drill the required holes to find/follow the fish, ice fishing can be rather fun. It isn't just sitting on a bucket staring down at a hole (well, not usually anyway).

  14. My description may have been a little off. What you described is basically what I attempted. Still, I was experiencing trouble. It was on the downward "yo" where I seemed to be getting into trouble.
  15. This summer I attempted some vertical jigging with a Mann's Little George and I was frustrated when the line would become entangled in the treble hook or, sometimes, the rear spinner. I started with braid but thinking it was the extra limp line which was causing it, switched to mono. This didn't help much. I tried to keep contact with the bait so there wouldn't be a lot of slack line but that didn't help much either. What am I doing wrong?
  16. I can't believe I missed this post. Although I said it before, I'll say it again-congratulations! She is beautiful! I hope she is healthy and happy and gets good enough to outfish you on a regular basis!
  17. I agree. I was fishing with a good buddy and I knew that powerbaits were picking up lots of bass (from a previous trip). He experiemented by trying "non-powerbait" equivalents and scarcely picked up a fish. Then he switched and began catching fish. Also, when the bass aren't aggressively hitting and you have to watch the line for movement or feel the weight of the bass on the other end, I believe the bass hold on to powerbaits longer so the hookset "window" is longer. I'm convinced they work better than the average soft plastic.
  18. I hope this is a shad. There were several dead fish floating near the boat ramp of my favorite lake (just off the Illinois River) that looked a lot like this. I hope they weren't Asian Carp.
  19. Any fellow ice fishermen out there? I love to ice fish-especially since I got a flasher. I'm starting to salivate about it already. Anyway, I've been wondering if it's legal to attract fish to a hole by using a fish decoy if you aren't spearing the fish. I imagine the laws are different in each state however I just wanted to get your thoughts/feedback.
  20. Life Rule #5: You either have plenty of money but not enough time or vice versa. Seldom do you have both.
  21. Oh, sorry. Coincidence, I guess. I've never seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre but while some critics say it's rather disturbing, they couldn't deny that it was well made. It was on Rotten Tomatoes list of best horror movies.
  22. my brother makes good head cheese! you like head cheese? Can't say that I've ever actually had it but I'll probably pass. It looks too much like meaty chip board).

Okay, cool. Glad to hear that! I worked at a community college in Illinois where establishing residency was/is more difficult. We had tons of students who would say "but I've lived here for over a year!" and then still be required to pay out of district fees. Just didn't want that to happen to you.

I don't wish to be a wet blanket but you might check on the residency thing. Although I don't know this for certain, you might not be able to change residency if your primary purpose for being there is to attend college. If you haven't already, you should look into this before banking on it. But Montana sounds cool. I'd go!!!
  25. Loved it! I wonder what toppings he ordered for his Pizza? Blood sausage with extra head cheese?
