Just canceled an all expenses paid trip to Hawaii

Recommended Posts

Mother in law bought flights and hotel stay for 9 days in Maui. Just convinced the wife that we didn't have time to go with the upcoming move to Kansas. Real truth is that I have a massive phobia of flying and I'm not hip on spending 26 hours in the air within one week. Ain't I terrible?

I would have canceled the trip too, even if EVERYTHING was for free.  I'm the biggest  when it comes to flying. Chances are if I can't get there by boat, car or train, then I ain't gettin there. ;D

Was the wife mad?  Are the in-laws going to be reimbursed?

Have you flown before? I was terrified of planes and heights until I got on one, now I love to fly :) I still think about bad things that can happen, but they don't stop me. Not trying to call you a wimp or anything, but just know it gets better!

Nate, I have flown over 35 times. I hate it and I don't see the point of flying all that way to sit on a beach when I can do the same thing here.

I am with you man, I won't fly either. And yes I have flown before, several times actually, and the flights were fine, I just didn't like. Been 17 years since I have been in the air, and hopefully 17 or more before I go up again.

Tough call... definitely not a fan of flying but I would have to grin and bear it for a free trip to Hawaii with the family. Best of luck on the move to Kansas- that is bad timing.

Man I fly and fly and fly and fly and...

fly, and fly

I'd say I average about 7 flights a year for the past 10 years, and maybe 3 times a year before that, dating back to when I was a kid.

Do I enjoy flying?

No.

Am I afraid of flying.

Not one bit. Been in just about every make and model of passenger jet as well as a variety of single and twin engine prop planes. In fact, the flight part isn't all that bad, aside from the cramped quarters, screaming babies, and the 10-year-old brat kicking the back of my seat. I've even been skydiving - and thoroughly enjoyed it!

It's the airport lines and airline fees that drive me nuts! Way too many inexperienced travelers out there. They take forever to go through the security lines, and don't know how to get loaded on/off the plane.

And don't even get me started on the airline fees! >:(

My advice: take the trip.  Hawaii is awesome.  Have the doc give you some "happy pills" if need be for your flight.  But just do it!

I bet Glenn takes the happy pills just to browse this forum...

Anyway, your about to lose that beach when you move to Kansas so you better enjoy it while you can ;)

I have flown three times and hopefully never again. Here's what happened last time.

A co-worker and I flew from Palm Beach to Mississippi for a class. The plane in Palm Beach to Georgia for lay over was huge and not too bad. The flight from GA to MS is where things got bad. We walked through this long tunnel and onto the tarmac, which we didn't do in Palm Beach. I saw everyone walking towards this miniature plane with propellers on the wings. My co-worker said "that's our plane." I did a 180 and RAN back for the tunnel (Yes, I was 40 years old). I get manhandled onto the plane. As I go through the door and walk to my seat, I had to bend over because my head would have hit the ceiling (I'm 6'2). I sit in my seat, cover my head with my jacket and set up pictures of my kids and wife all around me. I also had my son's teddy bear clinched in my arms. Even though I couldn't see them, I knew everyone of the 12 passengers were laughing at me, but I didn't care.

On the way back to GA from MS was the same scenario. This time, as we were getting onto the plane for home, I developed a bad case of anxiety. I didn't know it was anxiety until I spent 7 hours in a GA hospital while my co-worker cursed me for being a big baby (he's also my best buddy).

Needless to say, short of an EXTREME emergency, I won't be flying anymore.l

I dont mind flying.  Bridges, now thats another story.   ;D

I can totally understand the phobia.  But, a few drinks will get you to a happy place....and a few more on the plane will finish the job!

This thread is amazing.

I bet half the guys on here would not think a minute about going out deep sea fishing in a 22 ft boat yet you couldn't pay them to fly.

Its all because we are fine with the dangers we know and scared of those we don't know

Where's the danger in that, I do it all the time.

Statistically speaking safer up there than down here.  Professional pilots, air traffic controllers, meteorologists and the rest.  Down here amateurs everywhere, on the roads and water.

I'm not real crazy on the nickel diming of the airlines to pump up profit, I'd prefer them to raise the price and include everything the way it used to be.  I will draw the line when I get charged extra for my wallet, calling it extra carry on luggage.

Been up seven times this year(Twice to Hawaii). Never a problem. The wife flies every week. she's up now getting ready to catch a 6:45 am flight back to chicago. We are headed back to Hawaii before the end of the month. Her company sends her out at least once a quarter to work a week at a time. I don't go every time but I'm going back for the third time this year.

Geez...I can't imagine passing up a trip to the islands.

My wife hates flying, but "happy pills" are a safe and

proven solution.

8-)

I hate flying. Not the actual flying part though. Being lined up like cattle to slaughter, forced to strip down to pass through security, being interrogated by a TSA employee with the IQ of a toadstool about why I need 2 laptops, then having to hop to my gate with shoes in hand, and everything I am carrying draped over a shoulder trying to get to a plane that is supposed to take off in 10 minutes.

Then sitting on the tarmac for 3 hours until they cancel the flight send you back and have you sit in the terminal for 2 hours.

All the while being treated like dirt by airline employees. They may dislike their jobs but as they cannot quit (or they would have) they actually need passengers to stay in business, apparently they missed that memo.

Anyway, I would rather take the chance of flying the plane myself.

I'd like to fly the plane myself too. Preferably one with pontoons and a full tank. But they would lock me up cause I don't have one. ;)
