  1. I am using braid but why would that matter? I'm not following you. With the drag set as tight as it will go, I can still pull the line and turn the spool, or fish could run and still pull line. I posted the above and then went back and checked the spool. Marty, you're a genius. It's not the drag that's slipping its the whole spool of line. Thank you. I will now strip off that line and either secure it with tape or put some backing on the spool. I appreciate everyone's help!
  2. I went back and checked everything in the reel again, including those drag spring washers (even before you posted ddigit) to make sure I hadn't missed something. I did orient them as you suggested. Maybe the reel has always been this way and I just never noticed it. Frankly, it isn't that old and I have only used it a few times. I initially took the reel apart because the thumb bar was difficult to push down and release the spool. That problem is fixed but I still can't get the drag right. Correct me if I'm wrong but at some point in the tightening I shouldn't be able to pull line off the spool, right?
  3. I have an Abu Garcia 5600 round reel and i can't seem to get the drag tightened sufficiently. There is always some slipping. I took the reel apart to see if there was any grease or moisture on the drag discs and I wiped them off. I put the reel back together and its better than it was, but it still slips. Any suggestions?
  4. I've never done any ice fishing but I'm now seeing a lot of combos in the stores again for the season, and I'm wondering about these rods. How do these thin little short rods handle a fish of any size? Can someone shed a little light on why these rods are what they are?
  5. Just stumbled on this by accident. Interesting. Not a good way to die.
  6. Still 2.659 here in Pennsylvania, land of taxes
  7. Oh yeh. The grocery stores around here have been doing that for a long time. You have to watch because the grocery prices are generally higher to offset the gas. Shop the sales. I take 3, 5 gal. gas cans with me and buy a full 30 gallons, the max. When gas prices were lower, I sometimes got 30 gallons free.
  8. I took my wife to the movies the other night and she said she needed to use the restroom. I said the sign on the door says ladies, but go in anyway.....and then the fight started.
  9. I've been keeping my eye open for a rod to use for bigger pike and bass, and possibly muskie if I get the chance. Something capable of launching 1 oz.+ lures. I ran across this Fenwick GoldenWing 7'0" MH model GWT70MHMC at Gander Mountain. Rod is rated for lures from 3/4 to 3 oz. and line 17 to 30 pound. For a stout rod, seemed fairly light in weight and well balanced. Regular price was $100. Got it for $49.97. Good deal???? Anybody have any of these rods? Will this work for my intended use?? Any suggestions on a reel?

About the only time I use a swivel is with an inline spinner. Palomar knot as stated above
  11. Never get the shot and can't remember the last time I had the flu.
  12. I have a few white ones, but I've never used them. Under what conditions are they good?
  13. Have you thought about trying to find people to adopt them after you trap them. We have had many cats and some have gotten pregnant before we could get them fixed. We never had any trouble getting rid of the kittens. Always people who wanted them. We just rescued two from the pound last March, (which brought our total to 5) and they are two of the most loving creatures we've ever had. BTW, our cats are excellent mousers, keeping the rodent population down. We have little dead bodies everywhere.
  14. Still around $2.89 here in Western (redneck) PA. Too high considering the price of a barrel.
  15. IMHO OPEC needs to be careful. Cutting production to raise prices in a worldwide recession could prove to be counter productive and only serve to depress demand more. This is not where they need to be! Like it or not, oil drives economies, and forcing consumers to spend more on necessities, like gas, and raising taxes, only removes money that could be used to stimulate a recovery. Anyway, they might not have the clout they think they have. Market forces can be difficult to overcome. And if memory serves, in the past when OPEC has tried to cut production, other countries figured out that there was a void that needed filled and they could sell MORE oil!
  16. Buying opportunity!
  17. I'll second that. In fact, 99 44/100% of the guys on this board could do a better job that those currently in power and bleeding us dry. When you send in the clowns, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
  18. "TOWANDA!!!!!" Remember the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" and the parking lot scene?
  19. Way too much work. Any tone/song I want, I just play it on the computer while holding the phone up to the speaker in the record mode. Then just set that file as a ringtone. You can't tell the difference.

  21. As a bonus, you'll have some new fish attracting structure. I gotten several lures out of trees by using a homemade grappling hook made out of coathangers. Strong enough to pull the branch down but can easily be straightened and released by giving a hard pull should the grappling hook get snagged.
  22. You can tie a Palomar, you just need a reall big loop to go over the buzzbait. I tie a hangmans noose but some people have told me that isn't a good knot to use but I don't ever think I've lost a buzzbait to that knot except once. And that was when the line got snagged in a bush behind me, I didn't check the line and on the next cast the buzzbait kept right on going. But I do like that knot. It pulls tight and does not slide up and down the arm of the bait. BTW, are you sure it's your knot that's letting go and not just your line breaking. Check for nicks or maybe you just have a bad spool of line. If your knot is letting go, slipping, the end of the line would probably be all kinked and curled. If breaking off, it would be straight or maybe a little hook
  23. I find it's easier if I take the hook and split ring off the lure together first, then the hook off the split ring. Then put the whole thing back together in reverse order. Trying to take the hook off the split ring while still on the lure, I find the lure gets in the way.
  24. Sounds like your tactic was just right, the impression of a fleeing bait fish not wanting to snarl in weeds. Another question, what color did you use? Not that your success might be what works for me, I'm just curious.
