  1. I just started fishing again a little over 2 years ago, and like you, had never caught a bass in my life. I love it now and this is the place I learned. 2 things: Beware of the baitmonkey and if your significant other is like mine her new most oft repeated comment will be "Is that all you do is fish?" Welcome!
  2. Bassproshops sells a carolina rig shortcut. Never used it but have considered getting it next time I order. Looks like it would save a lot of time and effort. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_15792_100010003_100000000_100010000_100-10-3
  3. I had them all except the first one. i couldn't remember it was the silver bullet. I'm old like Sam. ;D
  4. I had one on Saturday that was hooked below his tongue. Never had one there before. The tissue was on the bend of the hook and I just couldn't get the long shank of the hook turned properly in his mouth. I cut the line and turned the hook so the barb and bend were in reach of the pliers, cut the hook then I was able to pull the straight shank out from below. I was getting worried because I had him out of the water for a while but he swam away.

  6. I don't normally fish for cats but I thought I'd give it a try several weeks ago. I got one 20" cat doing this: A catfish rig from WalMart. Has 2 swivels, heavy line a bead and a weight. I put a treble hook on the end, pressed some Berkley blood bait on the hook and attached the whole thing to a swivel on my line. I cast the rig out as far as I could, set the pole in a homemade rod holder, put a little loop in the line between two of the guides and attached a small bobber. That way when the fish took the bait the bobber tapped against the pole and alerted me to a fish. Waited about 1/2 hour and fish was on. I understand some better places are where stream or river channels run nearby flats or pockets of slow moving or backwaters in rivers. It was a blast, I'm going to try it again.
  7. Are you swinging the rod too hard? Easy does it. Every now and again I try to get a little more distance on my cast and swing the rod harder than I should and the bird's nest will start while the lure is still in the air. That is the one thing I had to learn over again, don't swing the rod hard. Try real easy soft casts.
  8. I have the Falcon spinnerbait wallet. Not the best but its ok. The skirts tend to get caught on one another. Sometimes I have to take several baits out to get 1. I'm looking for something better.
  9. I've seen this before but it's still funny as heck (and mostly true) ;D
  10. I'm just wondering, have you spooled your line on the baitcaster correctly? It needs to come off the top of the line spool and over the top of the reel spool. I don't know if that would cause your problem but if you've tried everything else, check it out.
  11. We have grocery stores that give 10 or 20 cents off per gallon up to 30 gallons for every $50.00 you spend on groceries. We frequently get $1 or $2 off every gallon and I buy the whole 30 gal. When price was lower I occasionally got gas free. Of course, many of the groceries are higher priced, you have to watch and shop the deals only.
  12. I've been keeping tabs on it here. http://www.bloomberg.com/energy/ Funny, our gas dropped about 20 cents several weeks ago, when prices started to drop, then hasn't moved since. Also strange how every station in the area has exactly the same price at the same time. Where's the competition?
  13. Wow, I like both of those. Maybe a combo of the two and some tackle. Take no prisoners, that's good!
  14. Doesn't look so bad ;D ;D ;D had one just about like it the other day. Hit a large weed behind me.

    Love it! ;D
  16. So if we started drilling 5 years ago, we'd be seeing the benefits by now. Right! Markets work. Free markets work even better. Who was it that said "That which governs least, governs best". Lastly, I agree with RW's last post 100%.
  17. My local Gander Mtn. has a lot of combos at what appear to be good prices. Fenwicks w/ Abus, Pfluegers, some Gander Mtn reels, etc. Would like to pick up a couple.
  18. Personally when I come across a spider, any spider, it ceases to exist. ;D
  19. The world runs on oil. this country is a major success because of oil. Developing nations are prospering because of oil. The world runs on oil. Why has it become such a demon? You want prosperity, get cheap oil and watch your economy grow. Are we harming the environment with it? No way. One volcano puts more junk in the air than we do in a decade. Its here for us to use. We'll develop something else when we need to. Necessity has always been the mother of invention.
  20. I generally stay about in the middle of what the rod is rated for. seems to work fairly well for me. ie: rod 8 to 17#, I usually spool 12#. However, Roadwarrior has been extolling the benefits of YoZuri hybrid, so I think next spring I'm going to simplify my life and respool most if not all my combos with this line and give it a try.
  21. Don't have that one but I do have several cheaper Quantums I purchased at Dick's (their branded models) and I like them. I'm thinking about getting the Accurist that is also on sale at Cabelas to put on a flippin' stick I'd like to get.
  22. Excellent post. But I have a question. I haven't used jig and pigs a lot but I would like to try them in my local river. Lots of wood and such for cover. But my question involves the weed/brush guard. Do you leave them as is or do you trim them and thin them out? I have a hard time seeing how a bass is going to pick that up without feeling that huge weed guard and how am I going to get the hook set and move that guard out of the way of the hook. I know the guard will be necessary to prevent hangups in the wood, etc.
  23. Are you talking about the double tail hula skirt grub? If so, I haven't used them alot but when I do, I rig on a 1/0 EWG hook, skirt up, same as the Ika.
