  1. I backlash my DC reels more than any others that are not my skipping reels. To be fair I mostly cast spinner baits and frogs with it, but still....false confidence isn't always your friend and when that confidence fails it FAILS
  2. I would have a custom rod made for my favorite presentation. Best thing you could add IMO....but beware once you do that you will want to do your 2nd favorite.
  3. I said I was done a month ago...but the classifieds here got me. Bought 3 reels yesterday. BM be damned.
  4. https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-advanced-anglers-ii-super-magnum-tackle-system?ds_e=GOOGLE&ds_c=Shop|Generic|AllProducts|High|SSCCatchAll&gclid=CjwKCAjwi6WSBhA-EiwA6Niok41vufgZTB-xPXftbCZuOZgqhdqnp8l9ePETjDbnUPM_T93elH5KCxoCybYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds This works well for that then.
  5. Thanks to you both for not taking that out of context. It is foreign compared to my normal sticks and being so different I wanted to comment. Definitely not saying my way is right for anyone but me. A-Jay your insight and presence here is appreciated always so I am particularly glad you read that the right way. That and I have to say that I am mad I don't like it. Not because of the recommendation but because the replacement isn't going to come cheap.
  6. I bought one of those used (for a song) based on your love of them and am thoroughly confused by your love of it. The action of the rod is fine, but it is super hard to cast. The butt section is super short which completely gobbles up distance and the rod weighs a ton. I also find it has almost no feel compared to the rest of my locker. That all being said, I don't bring this up to argue as obviously it works great for you but that we all have different expectations and needs. In my case it was my first foray into a non lightweight graphite only rod and the only rod I own that isn't custom built to my really long body. My current problem is replacing a $40 rod may cost me $500 so perhaps it would be better to just grin and keep using it. Oh, it definitely keeps fish pinned great though.
  7. I've caught a couple bass ice fishing, but cringe everytime I do as it means others are and they are eating them. Can't say I take any enjoyment from ice fishing. The lack of casting makes it completely unfun for me. That being said, drinking a few beers with friends on the lake is fun and if there happens to be a rattle reel on the wall I am totally ok with it.
  8. I basically never throw a lipless on a crankbait rod and much prefer a MHF for them. Normally I am fishing them near grass though and a moderate rod just means fouled casts where the heavier fast rod lets me rip them through cover.
  9. I only count what is my intent. ie, if I want to take the hook out with the fish in my hands, if I want to shake it off right at the boat, if I want to unhook it in a net in the water...etc. Whatever it is that makes it a catch. For instance, a bullhead is a catch when I shake it off as soon as I see it...not that I want to even count it as a catch, but the idea holds.
  10. This. I have a couple of them and they are perfect coangler boxes...in particular if you assume all the tools you need are already onboard.
  11. A MM sounds awful to me for everything but small crankbaits. My least favorite action and would abhor it in spinning.
  12. We've been together 27 years and the key for me is making sure she is physically satisfied and then she is ok with me doing whatever. At the moment though it is attention for my boys that causes me to not go. I refuse to miss out on their games, concerts and other such things. I love the idea of the tube behind. My wife loves to read and would dig that. On the 521 she would just lay on the rear deck but with the tiller the tube trick would work. She likes to pick up the rod when I find a good spot but wants me to do the hard work.
  13. Blades on a good ball bearing will provide the same input force onto either type of wire. The reaction of the wire is however different. Break two different thicknesses of hangers at the same length and attach a 1oz weight to them and whip them back and forth. You will feel the difference. Now whether that difference is a good thing or bad thing for attracting fish I have no idea. Btw - change the speed and frequency that you wobble said wire. Then realize for different baits that motion will be imparted at different retrieve speeds.
  14. It better. Have another guide setup for Monday
  15. Had a redfish guide booked today and the winds were so high he cancelled.
  16. It will overload the rod casting perhaps....but you aren't casting per se so I wouldn't hesitate to see how you like it.
  17. Lord you should see my wife deadstick a tube. Something about reading a book can make her more successful than the rest of us on the boat. I've been blaming it in the estrogen scent on the bait, but perhaps it is her "I give up" behavior that truly wins.
  18. If it is the same diameter wire, the longer wire (ie without the loop) will have a lower vibration frequency and more amplitude at resonance. Not all things are equal though so you can kiss that all out the window. No reason for a study as it is rather simple mechanical behavior to predict.
  19. The other fact is that as a new caster you will birds bknest bad enough to have to cut off the line. It will happen. Start with cheap line. Take off what you have and learn and then put it back on.
  20. I'd go up to 17lb. Thicker is easier to clean up when you mess up and retains more strength. Big game is cheap and costs nothing to respool when you screw up your whole spool. Crank your brakes to max, overtighten the tension knob and cast the same for every cast. You adjust the length with your thumb, NOT your effort. Learn that and the rest will get easier.
  21. I have an 844 GLX and a MH Legend Elite blank both built at 7'10" that I'd pick for those presentations. The GLX is slightly heavier action so if you favor larger baits it would be better, but if you are using lighter ones I'd pick the SC blank. Either way, both are way better for that than ANY stock rod as they are fit to me and the extra length is great for those style baits. I would totally recommend a custom. As an aside, I built those when my rod lockers were 8'. I'd probably go a bit longer if I remade them.
  22. That is one of my favorite blanks. Built mine up slightly different than the Extreme, but it is one of my favorite rods to hold and use.
  23. I could add. I grew up living in lake front...and fished ALL the time.
  24. Taking my wife and kids to do the same next week. Can't wait. So done with hard water season.
  25. I give up on my cast and rip it back the instant before a fish swipes at it and misses because I gave up. Seems to happen way too often.
