  1. I just started using them very recently. The only things I do are this. When you put a new lure on, loosen the casting control knob (i think that's what it's called ;D), enough so that it cleanly in one motion falls to the ground, but you don't want it to fall quickly, just all in one motion. Make sure that once it hits the ground the spool doesn't keep spinning. I release my thumb off the reel when I cast but have my thumb right above the line, and the second it hits the water, I just place my thumb back on the spool and then let out a bit more line so it sinks. Hope that helps a bit?
  2. The bass below is my biggest bass. a couple year old berkley scale was used from the rec center people. Came out 5.6, then 6.1, then 6.0 all different readings. Which one looks bigger? The one I caught last night was longer, for sure, but just didn't have the stomach. I think it's time I just buckle down and get a scale. While we're on topic, any suggestions for an accurate enough scale under $30 or $40?
  3. Thanks everyone. As for the weight, it was on a very old spring scale and the spring was totally stiff. But it said 5lbs exactly, so that's just what I can say. In person I honestly thought 5 1/2 easy. Oh well, weight isn't all that important due to it's not my PB, I'm just happy that this Jig is working out for me!
  4. That's what I like about the jigs, although I've only caught 3, one being 5lbs, and the other being above 2, makes it all the more exciting. Quality goes WAY up.
  5. I don't own a scale, so I too just guesstimate, although when there's a scale handy, I weigh any fish over an obvious 2lbs just so I can re-tune my guesstimating skills. Anything over 4 lbs or that looks over 4lbs I take a few docks away from where I usually fish to the Rec center and have it weighed.
  6. Hey guys, well I haven't been posting pics lately, just a dozen or so 2-3lb bass and tons more under 1lb. I finally decided earlier this week, it was time to throw a jig. I've always wanted to get good with a jig, but always quit after a few casts. First bass. 12in maybe even only 11in. Second bass. 2 1/2 lbs solid. Third bass. (First let me say this, It was 8:30pm, Reservoir closes at 9pm, and I was freezing. I had stopped throwing a jig about an hour or two before and had been throwing a shaky head. Lost my very last hook that I had brought. I told myself, this is my last cast of tonight, no matter what I'm leaving after this cast. I threw the jig out there.) Bam, 5lber hits and put up a nice little fight. (weighed on a junky spring 1-25lb scale that only did pounds and half pounds. oh well) First time that pictures made the fish look smaller. This bass looked MUCH better in person. Oh well. To say the very least, I'm hooked on jigs. Although I don't get as many bites, the fish are quality, and gosh is it fun!!! Thank you BR for the great help!
  7. Congrats on another great fish. They may be getting smaller, but they're still monsters and bigger then anything I've ever hooked into!

The local Res near my house closes at 9pm, otherwise I'd be out there all night long. Fortunately, the past week has been overcast and 60degrees, and yesterday it even rained. Nothing like the Bay Area , raining in JULY.

I use the Powerbait lube stuff. Doesn't smell bad, cheap, and works for me.

  13. Nice catch once again!
  14. I haven't tried the Mullet yet. I have only thrown the regular. If you buy some of the regulars let me know what you think. I just ordered 2 Picasso Jigs, 2 Revenge jigs, 2 Skinny Bear Jigs, and 1 or 2 of other brands. I will let you all know which ones I personally like best. I got them in 3/8 and 1/2 oz. Thanks for the help!
  15. This is exactly what I do as well. I have a VERY over populated Golf Course pond about 10 minutes from me. I bring one sometimes two types of baits that I want to practice. There aren't any fish over 10in or so, but you def get a feel for fishing each technique and how to fish it to get bites. The problem is, this lake is so overpopulated, the fish will eat my finger if I put it in the water.
  16. I've seen you post this in several other threads, so I ordered some Yo-Zuri Hybrid ultra Soft #6 last night. I'm very excited!
  17. Thank GOD there's someone else in the same boat as me with Spinnerbaits. I can't stand them, yet I still have them for some reason. Thank you Matt, you made my day! Man, I was too embarrassed to mention it. Spinnerbaits are at the top of my "lures that don't do jack for me," list. The weird thing is that I catch them on inline spinners, homemade ones to boot. But if my life depended on a bass caught on a spinnerbait, I'd be pushing daisies in not time flat. :-[ Then again, I hardly throw them and haven't take the time to learn to use them effectively. I even caught fish on the flying lure!!! Come on, spinnerbaits, give me a break! ;D I think there's more people that have no luck / don't like spinner baits then we think, they're just too shy to say it. When you hear spinnerbaits you think bass fishing, but I HATE them. I use the Banjo minnow with 100 times more success then a spinnerbait.

  19. There's no comparison. To qualify as a shaky head the front hemisphere of the jighead must be "spherical". Brent's jig is a ball-head jig, but the Spot Remover has a broad flat that tends to steady the lure, making it an "anti-shaky" worm. With all due respect, the flat-bottomed Spot Remover is a great jig with plastic crayfish (yum crawbug, zoom critter craw, paca craw), but a finesse worm is mucho different. Roger I think I may have mis understood something you wrote, or maybe I mis typed something. I have no luck fishing a trick worm or anything else on a spot remover. I fish the ball heads from Brent just as I would in theory fish a worm on a spot remover, and have much more luck. The spot removers hardly ever stand straight up from what I've noticed..
  20. Hey guys, curious to know what you guys think about Stren Magnathin.. I'm looking for a thin diameter line, but not braid. I need it for a finesse setup and the 10lb line is a .009 or .010 dia so it appealed to me. XL and Suffix Elite have a bigger diameter.. Any info on it would be appreciated.
  21. SPINNERBAITS, Period. I have several, but just don't catch fish with them.
  22. Brent, I like your heads better then Spot Removers that say they stand up , in fact, yours stands up when shaking it a bit and does just fine. I've been catching 90% of my bass in the past 2 weeks on your heads that you sent me. The hook is much better then a cork screw or peg, it hasn't fallen off yet. What's most remarkable, I kid you not, I caught 10-15 bass on the same d**n trick worm, and the only reason I took it off, was cause the reservoir closed and I had to leave! Anyone that wants to fish Shaky heads, once * is selling them , get them, they're great!
  23. After looking a bit more, I also found the BPS extreme rod witha Extreme REEL for the same price as the Daiwa Procaster with the Bionic blade.. Isn't the Extreme rod a step up from the Blade? has anyone heard of the Extreme Reel, and is the high ratio good for jigs or is lower better? I posted it below. Which one is better for fishing jigs 3/8-1/2oz and the occasional 3/4 swimbait? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_90343_100003001_100000000_100003000_100-3-1 http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_59162_100003001_100000000_100003000_100-3-1
  24. When using braid on a BC do you need to put a backing of mono or any line? Or can you spool the braid straight on there?
  25. Eh it's only one ML Rod, and it's a slow action so the entire rod is too flimsy for me to fish finesse stuff. I use my M 6'6 for finesse and such. I'm going to use the ML for crankbaits and grubs and such. I have that Daiwa Procaster saved right now I was looking at it last night and wanted to ask what everyone thought about it. I guess it must be good if you posted it before I asked
