Lew’s Tournament Pro Spool noise
Here is an abu swing arm centrifugal spool. See how the brakes are free to swing down and away from the spool? They do that one by one as the spool rotates and smack the friction plate. The abu spool has the hindge mounted on the outer spool rim so they fall out when they are near the bottom of the spool. The lews swing arms are hindged near the center of the spool and fall down/away from the spool and strike the friction plate when near the top of the spool. With the lews, as the spool rotates a new brake moves to the top position and falls on to the plate making the noise. Notice how its tied to spool speed in the video? The time between ticks slows as the spool slows because it's taking longer for the next brake to reach the top position as the spool slows.

Lew’s Tournament Pro Spool noise
You'll never hear this no matter how hard or soft you fish a reel. This is something that is only observed flicking a spool with no spool tension in a quiet environment.

First Foray Into the Dark Side (first JDM order)
I got my tatula elite from them and a bunch of reel color parts. It takes forever for anything to get here though but yeah they are legit.

Lew’s Tournament Pro Spool noise
Shimano SVS brakes contact a center mounted brake drum with the bottom of the brakes. When the brakes fall down from gravity they pull the bottoms off the drum. The brake tops will fall back against the SVS brake holder but that's plastic and are silent. Remove the spool from your TP. Grab it by the spool shaft and slowly rotate it while holding it mostly level but with a slight downward angle. You will see the brakes swing out on top from gravity due to the slight angle and as the spool is slowly rotated the brakes will fall back down and hit the metal rim of the spool making the clicking noise. You can also grab brake on top of the spool, pull it out, and then rotate the spool and you will see it fall back into place and make a noise as it strikes the spool. This is normal behavior for these type of long swing arm centrifugal brakes. The kind that side dont swing so they dont makes these types of motions or noise. Why do you not hear it with your reels with the same system? DO they have the same system? If they do then are you holding the reel horizontal or is the side plate facing slightly upwards? Remember it's gravity doing this. The brakes won't swing out on top of the spool and fall back down on the bottom of the spool if the spool side with the brakes is facing up.

I was talking about the valkaryie. The trap has them with us warranty. They seem like really cool rods.

First Foray Into the Dark Side (first JDM order)
The tackle trap has them. They run about $450 if you use their code. I added one to my checkout once just to see what the damage would be. They look and sound cool but are too rich for my blood.

Wowzers. Can't you get them in the US with warranty?

Lew’s Tournament Pro Spool noise
I have an abu ivcb and it makes exactly that same noise when I do exactly what the op done did. Oiling the brake surface is beneficial but really is only going to stop brake screeching. What we hear are the brakes moving about freely and being smacked around by gravity as the spool slowly rotates. We have discovered gravity.

Anyone have a lews tournament pro lfs
Look at the lews TP noise topic. The guy is being told to return the reel for the 3rd time. Do we not have any astute angers here to settle this?

Lew’s Tournament Pro Spool noise
Spin the spool with the side plate facing up. You won't hear the noise. It's the brakes hitting the friction plate or hitting the side of the spool as they fall back down. That type of noise is normal for swing arm type brakes.

Lew’s Tournament Pro Spool noise
Correct. That is the sound of the bottom centrifugal brakes being pulled down by gravity and striking the friction surface. As the spool slowly spins a new brake moves to the bottom position and falls into the friction plate. This is because the brakes are mounted to the spool outer edge and the hindge point the brake arm swings on is below the head of the brake that hits the friction plate. If you remove the spool and lowly spin it by hand you will see the brakes fall down one by one as the spool is spun. Spin it fast enough and they all fly out. Actually I'm confusing this with abu's swing arm brake. The lews one isn't hindged at the spool rim but the same principle applies and is what is causing the noise as these slow rotational speeds.

Are my Rapala crankbaits ok?
No, they are not ok. They have a weak spot in the bill that grinding them on hard bottom will cause to crack them and break off. I fish soft bottom water so I don't have this problem but it is a problem and it goes way back.

USDM or JDM Zillion?
Yep quality is basically the same between the two but I do like seeing that made in Japan on the reel. As far as warranty goes? The cost savings is so significant (nearly $100) the risk to reward is heavily favored to getting the jdm reel and taking on that risk. I'm highly risk adverse by nature too. Even paying to have it fixed right out of the box and you would still come out ahead. Even more so with the metanium that is over $100 cheaper jdm.

Anyone Frogging/Pitching With JDM Zillion?
I don't remember. I changed mine to a carbon one. I think it was a 90.

Anyone Frogging/Pitching With JDM Zillion?
Used mine for one season so far frogging and it is smooth like new. Daiwa aluminum gears have a good reputation. If mine wear out I'll just switch to brass and still come out way ahead in cost over buying the usdm reel. Made in japan too instead of thailand like the US reel.

Yep, that sounds like a swing arm centrifugal brake to me. Totally normal.

Budget baitcasting reel
Lots of things. I have tried a few of them in that range or even cheaper and some are quite good in performance easily besting the magnetic brake max reels with centrifugal or even dual brakes in casting. The max reels do have a much better reputation for lasting than these cheap china reels. This depends on what you mean by "good". You can get something that performs like a dual brake lews reel for $40-$50 but maybe doesn't last more than a year or two and when it does crap out good luck finding parts. On the other hand you have reels like the black max which perform, in my opinion, very average to bellow average when casting but have a good rep of lasting and are well supported. I'm not posting links but take a gander at aliexpress centrifugal brake reels. Hit me up with a PM if you want my option on a certain reel. Long story short though, just get a sale priced Fuego CT, SLX, Lews, Okuma for under $100 It's worth it.

USDM or JDM Zillion?
I went with the jdm because it's cheaper and made in Japan. If I want to change to brass gears I'll do that if/when I want to.

whats the best long casting reel?
So "geary" instead of "grindy". Same thing but I guess one is a bit less alraming sounding than the other. They work just fine but aren't as "refined" I guess as the zillion. Oh and I do have a tatula sv that does make scraping noise when the handle is spun. It's not super loud but there is a scraping sounds. It's not spool related because it doesn't do it when the spool is spun. Only with the spool in and the handle spun. Never did tear it down to cure it. Goes to show how much I really care about the noise I guess. This same one is also my most geary tatula too.

Lews Tournament Lite LFS
A cursory search shows that they have different braking types. A 4 pin centrifugal with magnets and a 27 pin centrifugal. You might be able to use one brake type in the other if the two are the same frame and you can swap side plate mounted internals.

whats the best long casting reel?
Is that the original zillion HLC or the newer t wing one?
-
whats the best long casting reel?
I think once you fish something on the level of smoothness like the zillion 1000, antares or steez a then other reels feel like the gears are "bad or "wore out" by comparison. That's how I feel after getting the zillion 1000 and alphas 800. All my tatulas feel grindy but they were always that way and I didn't know any better until I touched the zillion. My many tatulas still work just fine. They gears aren't going to fall off.

2017 tatula sv current but should I upgrade.
The usual suspects have great prices on these reels. Its not fair to give them advertising for free but a bit googling can get you to some sites with the JDM Zillion. The difference in the US version is the thinner knobs and aluminum gears. It's also made in Japan too unlike the USDM Zillion. It's also a bit lighter thanks to the aluminum gears. I love mine and it's super super smooth unlike anything I have felt before. If I ever do manage to wear the aluminum gears out I'll just get a set of brass USDM gears. I waited a year after guys had the JDM aluminum gear reels for a bit and zero reports of gear wear or gearnyness from my lurking another forum so I pulled the trigger this year on mine.
