  1. I have one of those and I never use it. I tried it a few times and never caught anything. I like regular Rat-L-Traps, but I think there are better diving crankbaits. Let me know if you have better results.
  2. I haven't used the Core 50, but I have used the high speed Revo STX. I didn't like it for deep diving crankbaits or large bladed spinnerbaits because it wore me out cranking them in. It was fine for smaller bladed spinners and I liked it for burning lipless crankbaits.
  3. I use BPS flourocarbon on all my spinning rods. It does have some memory, but I just don't like braided line for finesse fishing and that's all I really use a spinning rod for.
  4. That reminds me of another story where two friends saw a dog licking himself. One friend tells the other "I wish I could do that". His buddy replies with " well, maybe if you pet him first he'll let you".
  5. I fished a tournament on Sunday. Registration was at a marina and I had to walk past a lot of boats that were tied to the dock. The first thing I noticed was that nearly every boat had a rod on the deck with an orange craw red eye shad!
  6. I wonder how many more people would buy the Skeet Reese rods if the weren't that terrible yellow. Just about everyone I've talked to admitted that they have a good feel, but they're just too ugly.
  7. Thanks for all the advise everyone! I went to an archery shop and checked out a few bows and I'm actually considering a recurve. I know it will limit my range even more than a compound, but I liked the feel and it just seems like a lot of fun.
  8. What? Is that a joke?
  9. Catfishermen do it all the time.
  10. My fishing partner has gotten us permission to hunt a large south Texas ranch this fall. The catch is that we can only bow hunt. I can't pass up the chance to hunt big south Texas whitetail bucks, but I haven't bow hunted in probably 15 years. I don't feel like I need a top of the line bow for this one hunt, but I don't want a piece of junk either. Can someone recommend a decent bow in the $600-$700 range?
  11. Thanks guys! I've actually fished a tournament on Yatesville lake a few years back when I was stationed at Ft Knox, KY. I zeroed. Oh well, I'm still excited about the move. Is there any public land to hunt on out there?
  12. You're probably right. The reel I'm talking about is at least seven or eight years old.
  13. My brother has had a blackmax for years and swears by it.. He doesn't fish often enough to justify buying high end gear, but that reel has lasted a few years. I used it once when I went fishing with him. It casts well and has a good feel. I have used the cheaper Diawas and I think I'd go with the Abu.
  14. Thanks!
  15. I wouldn't hold my breath. Lead shot has been banned for waterfowl hunting for decades and steel and tungsten are still about the only options. There are other, but they are as expensive as tungsten. Crestliner, who told you that swallowing tungsten will cause you to drop dead? Lead shot was banned for waterfowl hunting because ducks were swallowing the shot off the lake bottom while eating aquatic seeds. I don't think they would have legalized something even more toxic than lead.
  16. Msg Al changed his screen name to Top which means he has been promoted to First Sergeant and he's probably a very busy man these days. I remember the promotion. I thought that his username still had his rank involved. "Top" is a nickname for First Sergeants. and for U.S.M.C. Master Sergeants. Al is in the Army.

  18. Lead is more dense than steel and tungsten is more dense than lead. That is the same reason why waterfowl hunters prefer tungsten shot over steel shot. The problem with tungsten is that it is expensive. I use lead probably 75% of the time and tungsten the other 25%. I can't imagine any reason to ever use steel.
  19. I looked at an Omega at WalMart this evening. That's probably the way I'll go unless somebody knows of a better spincaster.

Last week I was offered a job as an ROTC instructor in Virginia. I spent a couple of days weighing the pros and cons and on Tuesday I accepted the offer. Well, yesterday I found out that my assignment manager had made a mistake in his original email. I'm actually headed for West Virginia State University. I sure hate to leave this good Texas fishing and it takes me even further from my children in Oklahoma, but it is an opportunity that I couldn't pass up. I am excited about checking out that part of the country and it will give me a break from the mainstream Army. I started another thread about this in the Fishing Locations (Southeast) section. I'm looking for info about what kind of fishing I can expect out there. If you're a WV angler I could use your help. Thanks, Steve.

  22. I want to get my son a new rod and reel for his seventh birthday. He has decided that he's too old for his spiderman combo. I haven't bought a spincast reel in many years. Is the Zebco 33 still the standard or are there better ones out there nowadays?
  23. No West Virginia anglers out there? Really?
  24. Okay, I was told that I was being sent to Virginia, but it turns out I'm actually going to Huntington, West Virginia. Can anyone tell me what kind of fishing I can expect. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve.
  25. Thank you all for your help, but I found out today that there was a mistake in the email I received from my assignment manager. I'm actually going to West Virginia! I guess I'll start another thread.
