We call these high NE winds Santa Anna’s that average 35+ mph with gusts that can exceed 60 mph, very dangerous fishing the canyon lakes. 30 miles towards the beach lakes are not subjected to Santa Anna’s and are fishable. Prefrontal low pressure generally brings rain with lighter winds and are ideal fishing conditions. Tom

I am a few years older but grew up using flashers and reading topo maps, old photos to determine off shore bass locations. Between 1960 to 1980 I had the off shore areas to myself because the “trollers” who fished those areas aged out. My 1st paper graph was around 1975 as I recall followed by “color” Digital sonar. Each improvement caused debate about using sonar was like cheating depending where you fished. I had to smuggle my paper graph to Canada in a converted tackle box so I could use it there! 40 years pass bye until FFS/Live Scope units reset the old bias thinking. Could be the spark plug wires/connectors are arching and your Sonar is picking that up or it’s coupling onto unshielded wire power wire. Tom

No interference running the TM? Ferites are frequency dependent and need to be installed on the wire causing the interference. You might want to replace the spark plug wires and connectors, that is more then likely the interference source. Tom

When I was 18 had at least 2 years experience catching DD size bass, hunting deer and water fowl, driving race cars and boats etc. Todays youth grow up learning how to use computers, why wouldn’t they be advanced using this technology? No state comes close to managing their Black Bass programs then Texas. IMO the reason the bass population continues to maintain it’s big bass population is Share A Lunker program continuously restocks bass with superior genetic fish. California is a ounce and done bass stocking for Black Bass putting all their effects into raising and restocking sterile rainbow trout for catch and eat anglers. It’s been over 60 years now since any pure Florida strain LMB have been introduced into California reservoirs. The vigor of the FLMB population has dwindled into a few giant bass caught each year. Consider FLMB only Live about 15 years we have zero pure or F1 strains in our lakes today. Tom

I thought it was good article. Yesterdays fresh water sonar units for bass anglers required time in the water to get your money’s worth. Tutorial video’s have shortened the learning curve to interpret what the sonar returns are and how to take advantage of the units. Fast forward to today’s units that are very detailed and capable of returning signal inches off the bottom and in cover something you couldn’t do before. Scanning sonar was something we used decades ago for off shore game fish, expensive but so are boats. When Scanning sonar became available for bass anglers was a game changer along with GPS mapping. Garmin has entered the sport sonar along with others and FFS Forward Facing Sonar plus full screen Live Scope has obsoleted traditional 2D sonar of my time period for tournament anglers. What does the weekend recreational angler need? Learn to use your Sonar to take full advantage of what you purchased. Basic HD side scanning and 2D GPS is all you need to catch bass consistently unless time constrained like tournament anglers are. Tom

You have high end tackle but may not imo be suited for swimbaits in general. 7’ fast action rod with 3/4-4oz lures, no fore grip. It will work just not ideal, short and fast action. The Daiwa Zillion HD slightly deeper spool but small, a good combo, questionable for the application. My normal line choice is Sunline Deifer Armilo 25 lb / .016D for medium to larger size swimbaits. Armilo is no longer available in US markets?, still available in Japan. Tom PS, FC use Seaguar Tatsu 22/.015D or 25/.016D.

What rod & reel do you plan to use for the 3 oz swimbait? If you plan on using FC line you should consider replacing the line before every other outing as FC weakens from casting stress. 20 lb Seaguar or Sunline. Tom

I remember when Swindle was the hot rodder of bass pro’s until he was DQ’d doing 70 mph in a no wake zone on camera. My belief is knot tying is a part of fishing and learning new knots is good. Since Fluorocarbon became popular more knots have been developed trying to resolve the poor knot strength. Several knots have been renamed, same knot different name. I learned the Palomar knot long before it had the current name, it was called the Indian knot back in the 50’s for example. The Perfection loop knot back in the 60’s was the Mexican knot, the San Diego Jam knot was the Long Ranger knot etc. Off shore big game fishing the Bimini Twist double line knot was essential to learn. Try learning new knots you may find a knot superior to your current favorite. Whatever knot you choose learn to tie it correctly and under Fishing conditions. Tom
