How to catch the big one in Texas ponds

Featured Replies

What baits do I use to catch the monster bass in my big pond and what baits should I use?

Welcome!

I'd start with a large plastic worm on a Texas Rig. Color is dependent on what the water clarity looks like. In muddy and stained water, I prefer darker colors like black or green pumpkin.

To really answer your question, we'll need a lot more information. How big is the pond? Fishing from the bank or boat? Is it full of weeds, rocks, stumps? Also, do you know where he hangs out? What type of gear (rod, reel, line, weight) do you have?

It is a acre and a half grassy bottom most of the time it’s dirty to stained water

Hard to say.  There are a million factors involved and it can change from day to day.

But I've done the best in Texas ponds, or really any small pond, with a Texas rigged worm.  It's not always the best option.  But overall, it's probably the most reliable way to catch big bass in small ponds.  So if I just had one shot at it, that would be my choice.

1.) Buzz bait at night.

2.) Wake Rat at at dusk.

I fish numerous ponds to small lakes in Texas. Cover,  vegetation is usually the key for me. swim jigs, chatterbaits, Plastics, buzzbaits and top waters. Punching if vegetation is real thick. Fish the weed breaklines, over the weed or in the middle of weeds. Good luck. Many of the  places have DD fish.

At that size, weightless senko, owner flashy swimmer with a keitech, buzzbait. Maybe a chatterbait.

Don't forget to sneak up on the pond. Those fish are going to be really aware of whats going on in and around it. Slowing down may help you get bigger fish.

I fished a great pond in Texas regularly when Ived there, and they pounded a horny toad.

Sounds like a good place to toss large weightless worms like a 12 inch Jelly Worm.
