  1. At that time period Excell XPS FC was manufactured in Japan by Toray. Tom
  2. Memory come along with line diameter. If you compare diameters vs pound test on the label it becomes clear. What is 100% Fluorocarbon line? Is it 100% or 50% regrind from recycled line or virgin FC processed with high standards of quality control an consistent diameter. Excel isn’t a manufacturer it’s BPS store brand of unknown manufacturing year to year. Hybrid line is mono Nylon core with Fluorocarbon extruded jacket, Yo-Zuri and P-Line offer hybrid line. There isn’t any free lunch when it comes to FC line. Tom
  3. You can always add another 12V Lithium the same size you plan to add in the front for a 24VDC TM. The issue is cost for 2 lithium marine batteries, charger and space to accommodate the equipment. Interstate owns Optimum Blue top marine AGM batteries. Weight is an issue and price can be an issue. Tom
  4. What type group 27* marine deep cycle battery to power your TM do you plan the move foreword? Keeping the group 24 Cranking battery where it is in the stern near the engine is the correct decision and can be used for your house battery to power electronics. The cranking battery should have. 50 amp circuit breaker and if set properly by the deal has it. A mistake charging deep cycle marine batteries without being isolated via a battery switch can damage some sonar units. The front TM battery must be a sealed AGM or Lithium types. Wet cell will cause fumes to corrode everything in the compartment. Deep V hull is different then your Basstracker lower gunnel bass boat. All I can do is caution you, their are reasons bass boat locate batteries in the stern Peace, Tom * group 29 to 31 recommended.
  5. Out in the west coast we had the advantage of Japanese fishing companies introducing new products via pro bass anglers using their state of the art products. My 1st exposure to Gamakatsu hooks was a Phenix rod rep handing out samples at Action Tackle. The rep claimed Gary Klein developed his weapon jig hook with Gamakatsu and was coming out with a Ghost hook for finesse worm fishing. The hand out package was a “Rubber Worm” hook! The 1st Owner hooks Don Iovino was promoting back in the early 90’s. The Japanese hooks were incredibly sharp compared to Eagle Claw and Mustad we used prior to the early 90’s. Game changers! Tom
  6. Welcome to BR. The Dobyns Fury is FR705CB crank bait rod and works for what you listed. Not sure what the reel shown Bass Pro Qualifier 7:1 40# braid applies to; Falcon MHMF for frogs and walking baits? I wouldn’t use this combo for the presentation or lures listed. You can use the FR705CB combo* for top water walking lures. A good frog rod and utility rod for the. Pro Qualifier reel is Irod IRG754F gen 3. Works for lures between 1/2 to 2 oz. Tom * a dab of Vaseline on your finger finger tips applied to about 3’ to 4’ on FC line keeps the line on the surface.
  7. You can Google search my”Cosmic Clock and Bass Calendar”. I published this information in 1974 so it’s and more appropriate to man made impoundments Highland category. Bass behavior doesn’t change much in all ecosystems. I considered the Fall period as a transitional season from warm water Summer Period to Cold water Winter period. Water temps between 68 to 58 degrees at the depth the bass are located and migration starting to move vertically in lieu of horizontal. Aquatic vegetation changing from green to brown signals the critters living in the cover it’s time to move, the bass always follow their prey source. Small Pit lake are deep steep walled and the bass really don’t have anywhere to go. You don’t have creek arms so they don’t apply. You do have prey sources so they do apply. Tom
  8. Any boat that planes the majority of the weight should be located over the planing surface ie; the stern of the boat behind the drivers seat. Your battery area should be ventilated to circulate fresh air not a closed water tight compartment. Tom
  9. So many different type of “rubber” to make broad statements posted above. I don’t know what is used to make a specific primer bulb? Most primer bulbs are black Nitrile that is compatible to fuels such as gasoline, oil, menthol or ethanol gasoline additives. Black color “rubber” has good UV resistance in general. Today nearly everything is coming from China and unknown materials are used to manufacture products??? Vinyl, Silicone, Neoprene are different regarding weather and fuel resistance. The 303 protectant works and so does WD-40. Try to store the primer build out of direct sunlight to protect from Ozone & UV. Tom
  10. Thank you?! I should include The original Charlie Brewer Slider 1/8 oz is ideal for the flat tail craws. Tom
  11. Like any type of fishing the lure weight you plan to cast and line used are a major consideration to selecting a rod and reel. BFS as clarified by previous post cover a fairly wide range of lure and line size. To me BFS in bass fishing is using a bait casting reel in lieu of a spinning reel for light weight finesse presentations. The rod would be similar to a light to medium light extra fast spinning rod in lure weights and rod length. Shallow spool with minimum of 80 yards of .004 to .006 diameter line of choice casting reel, lots of reels fit this goal with after market shallow spools or off the shelf BFS reels. Today more light to ML casting rods are available. If you go into Ultra Light fewer over the counter rods exist domestically because it’s a niche market. I have always used light line for bass fishing then most anglers because my mentor was Jason Lucas who advocated light line. The answer to your question is you need a rod for the BSF reel. Tom PS, Dobyns offer Ultra Finesse casting rods.
  12. The broken back J11 Silver is pond bass killer lure. Wacky Weedless rigged 4” or 5” Senko #301 will catch those pond bass during the summer. Tom
  13. Swab the guide rings with a dry cotton Q-Tip to see if any fibers stick to the guide ring. If you like the rod overall then replacing the guide train isn’t too difficult. Tom
  14. Rust vs rust stain are 2 very different issues. Rust is iron oxide as a result of base metal corrosion, the metal is weakened. Rust stain is a result of the hook coming in contact of something else corroding, no base metal or hook coating damaged. Throw away the corroded rusty hooks. Clean rust stained hooks after determining it is stained, not corroded. Baking soda mixed a table spoon to a cup of warm water removes stains without damaging the hook coating. Coke Cola is an acid that removes rust from corroded metal but you shouldn’t use corroded hooks. Tom
  15. Do you plan to use braid with a leader? What size reel? Tom
  16. The history of soft plastic worm hooks would a interesting read and Tean9nine is the ideal member to write this article. Keep in mind plastic worm hooks are constantly evolving. #1 is a round bend off set hook. #2 is a Extra Wide Gap off set hook. Missing on both hooks are barbs to hold the soft plastic worm head end to prevent the worm sliding down onto the hook shank. The EWG hook adds space to accommodate the extra plastic that fills the #1 hook gap. Anglers have been trying to resolve the worm sliding down the hook shank for decades, as it prevents a good hook set with plastic covering the hook point. The 1st I recall was using a round wooden tooth pick inserted through the worm head passing through the hook eye then trimmed off. Using large diameter mono line in lieu of the wood tooth pick followed and rubber Peg-It’s are used. Recently pins were added the the off set hook bend to hold the worm head in place. The off set bend shape has changed in an effort to help hold the worm head. What gets over looked is the off set hook point being below the line pulling force. #1 you can see this particular hook point is slightly above the hook eye line of pull. The straight shank hook the entire hook bend and point is above the line pull force, therefor increasing successful hook sets. Straight shank hooks require skill to rig properly. The hook bend is another consideration. Most popular is the round bend shown #1. The modified Sproat EWG bend #2 has 2 negative design flaws; weaker and the extended bail shape cams over flat when a bass crunches down during the strike. Advantage of #2 is accommodates more soft plastic of equal hook size ie; 3/0 vs 3/0. Over coming hook design flaws is ongoing with dozens available to the bass angler choose. Tom
  17. SoCal reservoirs are highland lakes built for water storage. The dams are built across the mouths of steep rocky terrain with brush and a few scrub oak tress native to SoCal. Vegetation is very sparse and rocky terrain dominates the structure elements. The lake are generally clear water depth of light exceeding 10’ to 15’ sometimes over 25’. We learn to catch bass in rocky structure lakes with spares cover and reason finesse bass fishing was borne in our local lakes. Tom
  18. Rent a small inexpensive boat slip. A plain aluminum boat and small OB can be safely stored at a dock. Your kayak has all the equipment you need to fish out of, the aluminum boat ferry’s the kayak to your destination and anchored safely. You can tow more the 1 kayak for your buddies. Tom
  19. The 1st bass fishing I joined was Bass Insiders and enjoyed the community feel, good bunch of members until B.A.S.S. Merged the forums into the Bassmaster forums killing entire legacy posts and grouped members with a bunch of idiots. A new site was created by Insider member The Bassholes forums. Most of the original Insider family joined and the formate was nearly identical to Bass Resource unknown to me at that time. Good site until the owner ran into financial problems selling that site. I ran into Gary Dobyns at the Bass A Thon event and asked Gary what sites do you use and he mentioned 2 a Western site and Bass Resource site, so I joined both. The Western site slowly became Northern Cal dominated content and I still check in about every other week for any SoCal content but the members rarely share anything useful....PM me. The BR site however has grown in membership with a community of caring, sharing members with Glenn May at the helm. Don’t think I will ever tire of enjoying being a BR member. Thank you Glenn and all the BR family?? Tom
  20. The OP has already made the change so the bolt hole must have been 5 hole pattern. Know one is going to suggest you use different size / diameter tires on the same trailer. The question about is it possible and it is if the bolt pattern is the same. In an emergency the smaller spare drive at under 35 mph a short distance should be OK. The 13” tire will spin faster then the 14” and over heat if the speed is too fast. Tom
  21. Too subjective or broad based question to objectively answer. Bass locate at a depth where they are comfortable and abundance of prey is available. Example spring the spawn the bass ( Largemouth, Smallmouth, Spotted and all other Black Bass species can be found anywhere from a 1’ to about 12’ or deeper in gin clear water or off color water. During the spawn prey isn’t an issue, procreation is. During the cold water period when the water drops below 50 degrees and no thermocline exist all bass species can be found in the warmest water wherever it's located from 1’ to 80’. Post spawn (after it’s over) through the fall before a turn over occurs and a thermocline is developed all the bass species can be found in 6” of water to around the thermocline depth is, every lake is different but around 35’ is considered average depth. Rivers or impoundments with current thermoclines are not a major factor so depth vary more the lakes or ponds. Depth of light into water is so variable from particulates to wind conditions no general rules can apply. Tom
  22. Major Craft of America Nanoce NAS-WJ71MH, 7’ Fast, 3/16-5/8 oz is $120* direct from Japan with free shipping 5 day delivery. I owned this and it fish well above it’s price point. * check sale price. Tom
  23. Why not buy a 14’ aluminum boat with 15 hp OB and tow you Kayak to far away destinations or fish out of the tin boat! The Delta only/has 1,500 miles of shore to explore. Tom
