Gifted a Lowrance Hook 7
Generic box but shows Triple Shot you need to look at the unit for model name and serial number or ask your father! Donn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, buy a Lithium battery suitable for your use and use it. Tom

Gifted a Lowrance Hook 7
For Kayak use the Hook 7 Triple Shot should be good. The 7X model doesn’t have maps but supports Navionic chip, don’t believe this unit net works? Tom

When is a popper the BEST choice?
Any time you see or hear surface feeding activity a surface lure is a good choice. Poppers are generally smaller size less then 3 1/2” long unless you are taking about pencil poopers 5” to 6” long so they don’t make a lot of surface disturbance for bass to key on. Flat smooth water without a breeze work the poppers slowly with longer pauses. Light breeze with surface ripples little more aggressive retrieve stop and go retrieve. Light wind with waves you want to create more source disturbance with splashes and a few pauses and large size poppers. Tom

New to bass fishing... asking for help setting up the right rig
Getting started into any sport today can be confusing. Watching internet video’s can add to the confusion. BR has lots of good video’s and suggest starting watching Glenn’s video's. If you were new to golfing you need to know if you are right or left handed and right or left eye dominate, same with fishing. Most of us had the advantage of a mentor beginning bass fishing, let BR be your mentor. Tom

The Term "Flippin & Pitchin"
Pitching in tournaments would be Dave Gliebe. Tom

Popper
If the bass targeting shad the ‘Spash-It* fast retrieve that Zell Roland made famous works good. The tradition pop and pause like a dying bait fish or critter can and does work. Walking the dog makes lots a surface disturbance with a lot of forward motion can e the ticket. Try them all. Tom PS, feathered rear table adds more strikes with poppers. * trade name Iovino uses for the Japanese modified Pop-R.

The Term "Flippin & Pitchin"
^^^^this^^^^ The term has been hijacked like several others in bass fishing. Dee Thomas introduced “Flipping” to tournament bass fishing using a 12’ long pole without a reel. Rule changes required a reel used and the rod length not to exceed 8’. The since change to 8’6” ? Think of a flip cast as no reel needed. Tom

How do bass respond to a water outlet/intake?
It’s structure element that will use to locate on. Bass are able to conceive being drawn into the current and then over the edge, they simply realize the current offer a feeding opportunity's. Tom

Boat starts up then won't start again
Pull each spark plug and them separated; #1, #2 etc. Look ant each plugs color, should be the same light brown for 2 stroke. If the plugs are dark grey to black the fuel mixture is too rich. Light grey to white too lean. Too lean is dangerous are could fry a piston. Too rich is annoying but usually indicate too much fuel to air mixture or low electrical issue from ignition source. Make sure the fuel source is vented and no air getting into the fuel line. Change the filters, very simple to do. How old is the gasoline? Make sure it is fresh! Tom

Braid: 4 vs 8 strand
I use my reel set with firm rod sweep to set the hook when casting any distance where the lure is out more then about a 45 degree angle. Straight down or more vertical a rod set works OK because not moving much line. Tom

Braid: 4 vs 8 strand
Surprised you could lift 4 lbs off the floor without the full loaded, 5 lbs is close to bottoming out most MHF bass rods. Tom

Braid: 4 vs 8 strand
Put your thumb on the spool if needed. What rod are you using? Tom

Braid: 4 vs 8 strand
Understanding what a strand of braid is might be helpful. Understand what a end is vs a carrier also is helpful. A strand of braid is a strand of twist spectra fiber yarn it isn’t a single filament. A a carrier holds a single bobbin (spool of yarn) called an end or up to 3 bobbins. A 4 carrier braid machine could have 1, 2 or 3 ends. 8 carrier machine can also have1, 2 or 3 ends. What makes a braid tighter is the angle or picks the braid has. 45 degrees will be tighter with more picks and 30 degrees angle would be looser with fewer picks. Too many variables to define a difference is marketing number of ends making a difference in the finished braid line. What is import and is the strand coated, Fins coats thier strands with polyurethane others may use polyester most use nothing making the braid a little fussy in lieu of smooth. Tom

Braid: 4 vs 8 strand
I use a simple method by using 1 pint plastic water bottles in a plastic grocery bag. Each pint of water weighs 1 pound. put 4 water filled plastic bottles in the bag. With your rod-reel-line hook the bad handles and slowly lift the weigh off the floor….don’t high stick lifting over 45 degrees, never 90 degrees to prevent rod breakage. 4 lbs sounds like a light weight but your MH rod will nearly bend and max out. Adjust the dread so it starts to slip at 4 lbs for MHF bass rod or 5 lbs for Heavy. I guarantee you will be surprised what 4 lbs of drag feels like! Tom

Braid: 4 vs 8 strand
The tried and true original braid knot is simply a double line clinch knot. You end up with 3 ends after cutting off the loop end and tag end, no braid not is stronger and easier to tie! Similar to thing a Palomar knot with a loop through the hook eye then tie a standard clinch knot with 5 turns for 15-30 lb braid. I am sure this knot has several new names, but I learned to tie it in the 50’s! Tom

Hello!
Welcome to BR and happy you are taking an interest in fishing as a father and son. I will guess you and son use spinning tackle. With spinning tackle finesse bass fishing will be your best choice. You cab search using tool located at the top right corner of each forum for specific rigs and techniques, plus Glenn’s video’s are excellent. My suggestion with shore bound bass fishing with spinning tackle is the “slip shot” rig using Roboworms 4 1/2” to 6” curl tails in Oxblood red flake and MMIII. Enjoy Independence Day🇺🇸 Tom

Braid: 4 vs 8 strand
Change out the drag washers with Smooth Drags, about $2 plus postage and cost of Carls drag lube. Always set you drag no higher then the rods lifting strength; MH = 4 lbs, H = 5 lbs using a scale or dead weight. Tom

Anyone else having trouble finding the fish?
Summer or warm water period offers bass a smorgasbord of prey options, the ecosystem is alive with offerings to compete with and bass anglers prefer using lures to do this. The key to success during any seasonal period is finding active feeding bass. Summer the bass are active more often then any other period so it comes down to spending time on the water and offering bass something they are willing to strike at the right time and place. Sorry no panacea just lots of fishing time in the right locations. Tom

Best Texas rig rod casting
Any good casting jig rod works good for T-rig w/ bullet weight worms; ie: JWR jig & worm rods. Look at 5 or MH+ fast action or extra fast action rods in length you prefer. Today’s rods are under 4 oz Rod weight. My JWR rods the past 35 years were all customs to get my specific requirements. Consider what type of line you plan to use braid I would go 1/2 power or MHF in lieu of MH +, straight FC MH+. Tom PS, recommending a specific rod for isn’t possible imo, too many factors to consider. I bought my 1st OTC casting in decades a Falcon Cara BSF MLF 7’2” rod. The Cara is very light weight, well balanced with top of the line reel set and guide train and great workmanship. ML power listed should be ML+ imo, perfect for me. looking at the Cara specs for MH+ (lure weight) can’t find a model to suggest!
