Prevention is your best technique, pull off any loose line before starting retrieving the lure after each cast. Be aware of anything behind you the lure can snag during the cast. Putting your thumb pad on the backlash line and put pressure on the spooled line then reel slowly over the backlash serval turns. Slowly pull off the reeled in line on top of the backlash until reaching the 1st loop, pull slowly until the loop comes out ( do not yank on the line) and repeat until the backlash is gone. May take 2 or 3 attempts to get out a deep backlash. Tom PS, I put the loose pulled off line in the water to prevent tangling the line.

To start up a small business making custom soft plastics consider contacting a mom & pop bass fishing tackle shop to develop a name for yourself. Sunlight penetration depth into water depends on the angle of the light rays, generally greater than 30 degrees above the horizon. Waves change that angle deflecting sunlight rays into multiple angles. Water clarity and suspended particles factor into depth of light penetration. Bass don’t avoid bright sunlight they avoid low oxygen hot water and move under green oxygen producing weed beds to increased dissolved oxygen and cooler water. Keep in mind bass are sight feeders so good depth of light and clearer water is to their advantage. Flat claim water creates greater depth of light, light wind and surface waves decrease depth of light but help camouflage the bass due to their coloration. Bottom line you are missing about 6 hours of catching bass everyday. Tom

Thermocline is just that a fast change in water temperature within a few feet regardless of depth.. Smaller shallower waterways often developed severe thermoclines requiring aeration fountains to mix the water to aid in oxygenation. Tom

Spinning reels shouldn’t be causing a mess, close the bail by hand Don’t use the reel to close the bail, that often creates loops in the line. Closed face spin casting reels are limited by the line choices, suggest 8 to 10 lb mono only. Straight longer handle bait casting rods are not a good choice for spincasters, the older style pistol grip handles work well. The UnderSpin (Trigger) Spincast reels work good on spinning rods as they hang down on the rod like a spinning reel. Tom

Yes it does! You don’t use electronic so simple use a digital thermometer with probe* that reads instantly with about 10’ of cord attached and a weight. Lower the probe down into the water until you see a 2 to 4 degree cooler temperature in a few feet indicating a thermocline. The bass should at or near that depth! Tom * ElecBee w/5 meter probe.

Being an old gymnasts my shoulders are held together with screws and Kevlar, casting a bait caster shouldn’t involve shoulder stress, it’s should be in the wrist and some elbow stress, depending on technique. A fishing rod isn’t a baseball bat or tennis racket. Vintage reels how about 1940’s Langley Target* or Lure Cast reels that can cast just as far as today high end reels! It takes casting skill and trained thumb but 50 yard cast as easily within the old reels capability. The tuned 2500C is a 1970’s vintage reel, sweet casting reel! We all tend to believe casting distance is our goal and it should proper casting mechanics and accuracy. Casting distance will come as you learn proper technique. A moderate action rod is more forgiving to achieve the correct release point when casting with a bait caster. The problem we all face is finding rod / reel / line that fits our needs. What is good for me may not work for you, we have different needs and skill set. ”Crank Bait” rods tend to be more moderate action and good to develop your casting skill with. Medium to Medium heavy power is another bag of snakes as no standards exist to make good comparison. The average casting rod length currently is 7’, any rod between 6’10” to 7’2” within your budget rated moderate-fast will work for you. Berkley Big Game 10 to 12 lb test or Sunline Super Natural 12 to 14 lb test mono works good. Tom

Using bright colored floating braid as a strike indicator resolves detecting strikes with weightless soft plastics, the line must move before you can feel a strike. IMO you are trying to reach an impossible goal as it’s impossible to detect every strike, even visually watching bed bass in clear water. Tom

With extended cooler temps than normal it’s hard to acclimate to sudden high heat periods. Heat exhaustion or worse heat stroke sneaks up on you before you realize it, acclimate slowly and keep hydrated and cool off in shaded areas! Tom

The early 90’s Bomber bass boats may have have glassed over wooden transom, 1994 is questionable. Check out the transom closely for any wiggle when flexing the OB side to side or any stress cracks, deal killer! Tom

you need to test drive the boat to see if anything is broken and the OB runs good. The boat looks like it was garaged and well taken of! The engine needs a compression check and new water pump installed at a minimum. Budget in new trailer tires, batteries, TM and electronics that you will need. Tom

you can expect summer winds in the afternoon to increase as the inland eastern valley heats up over 100 degrees with the cooler bay air pushing NE toward the hot valley areas. Tom
