line removal

Featured Replies

I don’t have enough reels to dedicate one to every technique. When it’s time to switch from something like 18 lb fluoro to braid for topwater, would I risk damaging the line if I hand-spooled the fluoro back onto its original spool to reuse later?

You beat me to it Tom-2.0  !

Or pick up a few extra spools.

Then just load what you need, when you need it,

without changing reels or spooling line.

I do it with spinning reels all the time

which prompted me to bring it into the cast reel plan as well.

This is one of the strengths of fishing braid to leader, built in versatility, in case it's ever crossed your mind.  Multiple spools does sound better than hand winding out old line, but I can't see how that would kink or ruin the floro.

Where do you shop for spare spools?

Amazon, Ebay, Bass Pro Catalog Outlet, the reel manufacturer

I always have a reel on my bench - most often, I'm making shallow-spool mods for BFS braid (PE#1 to PE#2 - 20- to 40-lb X-braid).

When I'm initially setting mag brakes on these spools, I always use the same charge of 5-lb Maxima Ultragreen mono.  I spool it back onto a source spool, and re-use it next time.

On ebay, search spool and reel model.  You'll find a wide range of aftermarket options, from shallow braid spools to deep long-cast spools.  Also, some reliable vendors both offshore and onshore.

You need a 1/4 or 3/8" bolt, around 2" longer than your widest empty spool your line came on. Then you need a bolt, a wide fender, that empty spool, another washer, and finally a wing nut. You only need to be finger tight. Now load that into a cordless drill chuck and you can now slowly strip off the line from your reel with ease. Resist the temptation to go as fast as your drill can spin. Slow and low and guide the line on the filler spool neatly. You shouldn't have any problem.
