Hello, everybody! Bassresource comes up in a lot of my searches with seemingly great information and I enjoy the videos on youtube as well so I thought I would join.

I am just getting back into fishing after not doing much of it over the last few years with nightcrawlers being what I mostly used in the past. My 13 year old son recently showed interest in fishing so we have been hitting the water over the spring and getting into some decent trout fishing. He has really got me back into fishing again and his PB trout is a 17" Rainbow (didn't have a scale with us), and most rare trout species caught is the Gila Trout.  We were trying to complete the New Mexico Trout Challenge with only 2 species left that we will have to travel a few hours to get into.

He now wants to start targeting Bass, but we haven't been very successful. After having no luck on a couple of outings to a local small river we hit the highway to the nearest lake to us that holds bass. He got to land his first large mouth this past weekend and he was ecstatic! We fished for 2 days and only got 3 total. I am attempting to look at lake maps to try and figure out what part of our local lake we should target from the bank. Not sure what areas will prove to be productive. It's tough for us to bank fish this man made reservoir and from what I've seen it has very little cover consisting of mesquite along some of the banks and very few larger shade trees. Brantley Lake near Carlsbad in South East New Mexico if anybody would like to help me dissect the map and figure out where we should try hitting. I have a couple of spots in mind but am so new to this I am unsure if I am applying what I have been trying to learn correctly.

Howdy and welcome.

What have y'all caught bass on?

A little piece of advice that I sort of use is "Fish every piece of visible cover." So if there is a log, fish it, if it's a twig, fish it.

I extend the advice to include non-visible cover and structure such as where I suspect a drop, or brush pile or whatever. That helps me a lot to give me some direction.

The first day we caught 2 on a mini bladed jig with a grub trailer. The second day got 1 with a zoom utale. My son in law is admittedly a better angler than I am and he brought in 5 iirc on a creature bait texas rigged in the same area we were using the bladed jig. Out of pride, I suppose, I was reluctant to use the same bait he was using. Lesson learned for sure.

I think, and I may be mistaken, that my son and I really are not very good at detecting bites when fishing the slower presentations.

Bites can be hard sometimes. Braided line helps with it, but isn't mandatory. I use mostly mono and I don't have any trouble.

Depending on the day, a texas rig with a creature will outfish a bladed jig, and visa versa, just depends on the day how each is presented.

Texas rigs are great and worth the time invested to master. Zoom U tails are good worms. I use them with 1/8oz bullet weights and a 3/0 offset worm hook. I normally peg my weight.

Take the same rig and add a baby brush hog, if they want a creature. If your son in law is catching them on something like that, I'd throw my own on after a few minutes. No shame in that.

You can add a glass bead between the hook and weight, and leave a little bit of room (1/4") for the weight to move, and it'll give your texas rig some sound. Clicking like that might be what they want, and might give you an edge, or not. Just have to try it sometime.

I haven't considered pegging the weight. I will give that a try. Thank you.

Yeah, after thinking about it the next day I realized it was dumb not to throw what they were biting on and trying to get them to bite on what I wanted to throw.

Welcome to the club!

We've all done that one time or another if we want to admit it or not.

Yeah, I've done it a time or two. I like to try to find an alternative that's similar. Like, if my buddy is throwing a creature craw, I'll throw a baby brush hog. Or if he's throwing a ned rig, I'll throw a curly tail grub.

A Zoom Fat Albert grub, texas rigged with a 1/16oz weight is something that they don't see much, and thus, does pretty good. It'll twist your line though if you ain't careful.

I caught this bass on the above rig, using a 1/0 ozark trail offset worm hook. Some ozark trail stuff is decent, including their worm hooks.

I was running braided line, which doesn't show the twist nearly as much as mono. If using mono, I usually use a 2/0 EWG hook to give the grub a bit of a keel.

Welcome to BR. Keep up the good work getting your son hooked on fishing.

Welcome to BR and happy you are taking an interest in fishing as a father and son.
I will guess you and son use spinning tackle. With spinning tackle finesse bass fishing will be your best choice. You cab search using tool located at the top right corner of each forum for specific rigs and techniques, plus Glenn’s video’s are excellent.

My suggestion with shore bound bass fishing with spinning tackle is the “slip shot” rig using Roboworms 4 1/2” to 6” curl tails in Oxblood red flake and MMIII.

Enjoy Independence  Day🇺🇸

Hey. I got really into fishing at Elephant Butte lake.   I just Google Brantley a few weeks ago.  I’m coming to west Texas this Dec to shoot a hog, and I’m towing two kayaks to explore.

I never peg my weights.
