Best Time To Buy?

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I'm in the market for a new BC rod and reel. I'm wondering what the best time to buy would be? Should i wait til Black Friday/Cyber Monday? Or should I wait til early spring when they are clearing out last years model? Im in no rush to buy, just want it before next season. Also i would like to buy new so i can fulfill the warranty if need be. Even buying new off eBay sometimes can create problems with warranties.

If you can find what you want on Black Friday that's the time.

If you have an old reel or rod in working condition, you can trade it into BPS Spring Classic and they will give you a discount towards your purchase of a new rod/reel. I usually wait to buy most of my stuff until this because some of the savings are huge!

This is what I did. Three Chrnarch e for $118 each. I got some smoking deals on a couple rods, too.

How much do they allow you for each rod/reel combo?

I don't recall. It had to do with how much you spent. Plus, there was a Shimano rebate at the time.

It is something like if you buy a $40-$80 rod/reel you get $10 off. $80-$120, $20 off...etc.

The thing is, you can trade in a combo that was $15 bucks from Wally world or wherever and get a discount on anything your choice. I traded in rods/reels from when I was a kid, they were old and plastic but worked. They give them to youth programs to give to kids.

Prices around here are best at the Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show in February. Lots of the local and regional tackle shops and even some of the manufacturers are on hand and offer great show specials. Prices can be up to 50% off, even for new product releases.

I expect most areas of the country have similar events.

good idea in theory but by the time i get to a bass pro i woulda spent around 40 bucks on gas. closest one is 2 hours away! also i dont really have any sports shows around. there are a couple, but they definitely dont have good deal like up to 50% off stuff.

Well, it's my reality, not a theory. :eyebrows: And actually, BPS is a little over an hour from me, but a short detour from my trip to Onieda, so I generally stop at BPS after a day fishing Oneida.

I like closeouts. Couple Daiwa Fuegos at $144 (a $250 reel), a Curado 51E at $98 (a $200 reel), a Daiwa V.I.P. Smallmouth $50 (a $125 rod), a Cielo $75 (spinning rod in the $300 neighborhood and a beautiful rod!). Beats sale prices. :eyebrows:

EDIT: I missed out on the Fuego spinning reel closeout. :badlanguage:

Why buy new? I have got some smoking deals right here on BR on gently used top notch stuff. $95 for a like new Curado 51E, $60 for a Citica 201D, $65 for a Citica 201E, $40 and a reel I had in trade for a Curado 51E, $90 for a Curado 201DPV, $75 for a St Croix Avid 7' MH/F casting rod, and the list goes on....

yeah ive got stuff off the site before. i need something with a warranty though. im not brave enough to fix my reels by myself and i have a couple that have just been sitting cause they plain dont work anymore. i figured by the time i sent em to get fixed, paid for shipping and costs of labor, i might as well jsut buy new and have a warranty.

I don't remember times, but each were bought when the manufacturer was dropping that particular model. The Fuegos and 51E were bought in the spring...somewhere around March or possibly April. I'm trying to think back. Best I can recall, they were all bought in the spring.

You just gotta keep your eyes out for them. Same goes for what ww2farmer said about the forums. I've picked up some great gear from here.

Only time I pay attention to the prices are when I'm in the market to buy. I love a deal and will look around a bit, but if I want something I'm not shy to pay the price when I want it.

Try some of the mom and pop sporting goods stores. Sometimes they have to get rid of their fishing inventory to make room for the hunting season items.

Yeah! Got to agree. I picked up 2 used Falcon Originals for $35 apiece at a mom-and-pop store in Deland, FL a couple years ago. Planned on leaving them there for my future visits, so I didn't want to spend much on a rod that would only get used a few times a year. Course it hasn't worked out for me to fish my more expensive rods at home for more than a few days this year. :(
