Curado G - Castability ?

Recommended Posts

Ok, here's the question. Does anyone have castability issues with their Shimano Curado G. I know the G sucks in comparison with the E but I've always wondered why the hell my curado G only casts about 30 feet at best. I thought it might be a problem due to the fluorocarbon I had on the spool so I switched it out with some monofilament and it's not casting any better. I have the same monofilament on one of my Lew's reels and that thing casts like a dream. I cleaned up the reel a bit and it still doesn't cast well. Anyone have this issue?? Or has anyone had this issue and changed the bearings and felt a difference? I kind of don't see the point in changing the bearings out with boca bearings for $50 dollars when I have cheaper Lew's reels that perform way better than this G

How long have you had it? Maybe got a dud or something. 30 feet is pretty bad. Make sure your brakes and spool tension are set right. If all is OK, and you haventhad it that long, trade it back for another one.

I've had it about a year I guess. I need to go search for the receipt. Everything is set right on it.. I only have two brake tabs pulled out, three on a really windy day. I know it's not the rod because I had it paired with a Veritas and then changed it with a Kistler Micro Magnesium and still casts the same. It casts farther with heavier baits.. Sometimes I throw a sammy 100 on it and it casts well, but t-rigged it doesn't go anywhere!!

I had an Abu Pro Max 1600 that would not cast. I sent it in twice and they could not fix it. It was something to do with the "Race plate" whatever that is. I bet you got a dud.

Good luck. I know thats frustrating. My Curado G will cast plenty far for me, so you may have just gotten a lemon

Mine will cast equal distances with my Lews TP and Okuma Serrano, my two farthest casting reels.

Have you tried taking a cotton ball with a little alcohol and cleaning the metal brake race, then put a small drop of oil on a cotton swab and wiping the brake race?

PS: turn all the cent brakes off and and make few cast. If it casts fine (and you get the backlash from hell LOL) it's the brake race.

What do you mean by "cleaned up the reel a bit.."? A deep cleaning and proper flush and lube of the bearings will most likely solve the issue. The design differences between the E & G series shouldn't affect casting at all really.

The G casts just as far as any if set up correctly, cleaned and lubed properly. The G does not suck compared to the E either. I find that 9 times out of 10 it's operator error.

I own several Curado E7s and decided to get a slower reel for cranks. I bought the E5 and that thing outcasts all of my E7s. It is the throwingest reel out of the box that I have ever seen. You must have a dud or wrong setup.
