I fish mostly soft plastics and jigs,the occasional spinnerbaits and square bills. I am pretty sure I'm getting the Bps carbon lite and was wondering which action medium or medium heavy would be best for my uses? Thanks

MH, best all around action. Even if you fish treble hook baits, you can just adjust the drag on the reel to accomidate.

Depends on the rod, the power and action ratings between the different makers very wildly.

Not to be over critical, but it is important that you understand that Medium and Medium Heavy are power ratings and not actions. Actions are typically Moderate, Moderate Fast, Fast, and Xtra fast.

Pick the power of your rod based on the weight of the bait you intend to use and enviorment that you will fish. Choose the action of your rod based on the baits you intend to use on it. Slower actions for treble type baits (moderate, moderate fast) and faster actions for single hook type baits (fast, xtra fast) is in good rule of thumb, you can fine tune your preferences for different baits as you become more aquainted with rod power and action combinations. Good all around rods that cover a lot of techniques are med. hvy / fast and med / fast, just match the power of the rod to the weight of the bait you intend to fish.

I have a 6'9" MHXF Carbonlite and it would be good for everything except the squarebills. I like a slower action for them.

Action and power are different. Get a MH power rod with a fast action and you'll be set to cover everything well except for squarebills. You can still do it, but I would recommend getting another set up for crankbaits eventually.

Action and power are not the same thing, L, ML, M, etc are power ratings; moderate, moderate/fast, fast, extra fast are action ratings, rods have a combination of both ( ex: MH, fast ) and it´s that combination of power and action what tells you the best purpose for that rod, regardless of the power rating action ratings like moderate, moderate/fast are better for treble hook baits like cranks, while rating like fast and extra fast are better for single hook baits like soft plastics, frogs, spinnerbaits & buzzbaits.

It doesn´t mean that you can´t use X rod for another purpose, it means that using it will have drawbacks and that you will have to compensate for them, for example, for decades I´ve fished treble hook baits with fast action rods, what do I do to compensate ? I back off my drag, if a fish strikes the drag will slip before the full stiffness of the rod kicks in and that way it won´t rip away the hook from the mouth.
