Lipless Cranks And Braid

Do you find it easier to rip a lipless crank free of weeds/grass when you are using braid? Seems that running a lipless crank over and sometimes right through the tops of weeds triggers a lot of bass.

Yes, braid definitely helps. For me the key is to actually make contact with the grass. Ripping it free is what they can not stand. Good luck.

Yep works great. A hard snap of the wrist the second you feel it contact the grass. If anything floro helps with this as well but braid is tops.

I plan on throwing 1/4 ounce traps on 15 pound power pro and a 10 pound fluoro leader.

If you toss out a lipless and a quarter of the way in, you've accumulated some weeds on your treble, bass will still strike? or its gotta be clean after rippin it through?

I was always a little confused about this.

Braid helps free any lure with a snap of the wrists, but I find that having no stretch makes it easy for bass to throw a treble hooked lure.  I sometimes throw deep divers on a mod action rod with 15# braid.  Fewer hooks are thrown with a mod action vs a fast action, but the braid still allows a few to be shaken free.

its not so much that the bait rips "clean" really. its that when youre fishing a trap this way... youre going for a reaction strike.. not a feeding bite. most traps will come through most weeds with stalks rather cleanly. if youre ripping from one grass top though and it hangs the next, many times the next time you rip it is when the bass hits... even though you KNOW that theres some grass on it.

the fish is hitting it just to make sure it doesnt get away. its not taking the time to look at it and say.. "why is that shad toting around that grass? is it building a nest?"

i think of bass alot like cats... if you move something odd or fast away from a cat... they jump on it. not cause theyre hungry... because they are predators.

Absolutely! The rod I use the most for lipless cranks has braid on it, and I've never had a problem with fish throwing the bait either.

braid will hurt hookup ratio, youll have more missed strikes bc of no stretch.. as with any treble hooked bait

Disagree, Ive lost very few fish fishing red eye shads with braid. I havnt seen any difference going between yo zuri, or flouro.

Yes, braid and a lipless plug is a good combination along the tops of weed beds.

Braid also provides an excellent hook-up ratio, but due to its lack of foregivenss,

braid will likely result in more hook rip-outs (can't have it both ways).

Of course..no stretch. Braid rules for everything! And don't listen to that nonsense about Crankbaits and braid, and losing fish to no stretch. You CAN use braid for everything! ADJUST your drag accordingly. I use it exclusively, works like a charm.

I use a slow action rod for cranks and I've used braid with other treble hooked lures and haven't had problems losing fish. I set the drag lighter though.

when people ask how to fish any crank bait, I always say to make it hit bottom, smash submerged structure, pull through weeds, any contact with any structure is great. Most times it will trigger a reaction strike.

for me i like braid on lipless 1/2 ounce to rip grass with, but if the water starts to clear up ,i like to use a 1/4 ounce with either floro. or mono . i think it is just my personal preference.
