I'm trying to learn a variety of techniques and try them all to see what styles of fishing I like the best. I ordered all 6 seasons of the Bass Pros and have recorded Classic Patterns on TV. I think the content is good, but you soon realize these shows are nothing but 30 minute infomercials to push products (Bass Pros is owned by Bass Pro Shops and Classic Patterns by Pradco). I also read Bassmaster, Bass Angler and sometimes Bassin.

 

How did you learn bass fishing techniques? DVD's, magazines, books, etc? I know there's no substitute for time spent on the water, but these DVD's help with cabin fever in cold KY! I want to spend my time on the best resources available and cut out all the crud!

 

 

I bought the first season of the bass pro's i really like the show, but wanted to see the older episodes, good stuff in there.

These pros productions are much better than the Classic Pattern productions although I must admit I have lots of Classic Pattern DVDs and enjoy watching them from time to time.

 

Ike and Houston are outstanding productions. VanDam, Parker and Brauer are also very good.

Woo is outstanding! Wish he would do more.

 

Also check out non-pro productions like the Bass Hog guy. He is great! You will love him and you can ask him questions. Get his DVD on frog fishing. John is a riot!

I just purchased an autographed copy of Denny Brauer's 1991 book on tournament fishing. It is packed full of information that I have forgotten. Great refresher course and super for anyone wanting to learn more about bass fishing. Of course Brauer is the flip and pitch pro so get his book and DVD and you will learn a lot.

 

Read, read and read some more. Ask questions. Join a bass club. Ask questions of us on the Forum.

 

The more you know the better you will be prepared for the changing conditions we all face when we go fishing.

Larry Nixon has 3 DVD's that helps you find fish in spring, summer, and fall.  They helped me a ton!

I've enjoyed Lindner's Angling Edge productions. It's clear which companies he has commercial interest in,  but still there's much good information here. There are many seasonal techniques covered and the underwater photography is extensive and fascinating.

Like Minkota and Rapala? :-) Actually, I enjoy them as well. The two brothers always seem to be having a good time and they are good communicators.

 

The Classic Patterns are generally pretty good. I just ordered some of the old Bass Pros seasons so hopefully they'll be good. I also enjoyed Robert Montgomery's Better Bass Fishing. It is a good intro the subject.

I really liked the Glenn May (BassResource) You Tube videos.  Unlike alot of the free videos online, he provides good basic information rather than selling a particular product.

Glenn, thank you for taking the time out of your life to plan videos, teach, film and edit. I like watching your videos. Even on techniques that I feel good about, its good to get a refresher or reinforcement when you do a video on them.

It's good that you want to learn all you can to make yourself a better fisherman. That's a great attitude to have. I know some, whose pride keeps them from learning to improve from others. They figure they are smart enough to figure it out on their own.

Pride makes us blind to keeping an open mind. An open mind will feed it self and grow, a closed mind will remain in the dark and will become frigid and irratated to new thoughts.

Our sport is always growing. And techniques come and go and products change, its good keep an open mind of both the neww and the old and an understanding of why they work.

the learning process is not a destination that we try to get to, but more like a life long journey to become a better fisherman.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet,

 but there is a huge upside from spending a day on the water with an experienced Guide.

 

It's one thing to watch a video and read about something - however, working for 6-8 hours with an angler who can Show you certain techniques - is a very good way to learn.

Bassmaster has a good series out,Pretty informative.

Good choice on the "Bass Pros" , IMHO it's one of the most educational shows out there and not and endless stream of product plugs. I'll also second BassResource videos, very good stuff. Lindners angling edge series of videos are also another good choice, they do there fair share of plugging products, but they are not tripping over there own lips to do it, like certain other hosts that will go nameless..............son............
