Line Help For Topwaters And Jerkbaits

Featured Replies

Can this be possible? I'm on a budget and hoping that my 6'7 MF ***/T3B can handle top water lures like poppers and spooks while be versatile enough to use jerkbaits also. Normally mono is used for top waters and flouro used for jerkbaits.

What would you guys do? I really don't want to spend anymore money on another setup. I was wondering if hybrid lines will be the best to compensate for such different actions. Any thoughts on this is appreciated. This is my last of 5 setups and then I'm ready for opener.

Generally, I like a similar rod for hard jerkbaits and topwaters.  It sounds like the rod you have should be adequate for both.  As far as line, you're right about fluoro for jerkbaits but it's definitely a no go for topwaters.  I would get a mono or copoly that you like and go with it.  I would personally use 10lb test in a good copoly.  I suppose braid would also work, if you wanted to go that route.

You asked what would "you" do? Well this is what I do.....Braid....20lb tied direct for top-waters, and with a fluorocarbon leader for jerkbaits, usually 10 or 12lb. My topwater rod, is also my jerkbait rod.

With all do respect, I would give thought ot using mono for both topwaters and jerkbaits.  You don't want a line that sinks in both applications.  Fluro works fine for crankbaits, but when you want a suspending jerkbait to suspend you don't need a line that sinks.

You should be fine.

20# PP s8s with 3ft 15# FC leader for topwater and Jerkbait.

Using leader for topwater result to less tangle on the hooks compared to straight braid.

My topwater rod is my jerkbait rod. I kind of like it that way. Like it was said above, I prefer just regular mono for both applications. I also use my frog rod for my heavier topwater baits like big spooks and lunker plunkers. It is lined with braid. Last year i had 8lb mono on the topwater/jb rod, but decided to go up a notch.

Topwater jerkbait rod 6'6 M Daiwa T Rod, 10lb Sunline mono

Frog rod 7'2- H Powell Endurance 725, 50lb Spiderwire ultracast

I use 30# braid for my topwater/frog rod and 12# flourocarbon for my jerkbait rod.

This is definitely possible. Choose a nice 10lb mono and it is perfect for jerkbaits, topwaters, spooks etc. You really won't be sacrificing anything, that is my line of choice for those techniques.

This!!

Until I can get more confidence in Jerk Baits, I'm using my top water rig for them. I run 40 pound braid though. Mainly because I bought a giant spool of it and love it. I do switch up to copolymer for jerk baits too.

I'm running a Shimano Clarus 6'8" M/F. It has a lot more bounce in the tip than most mediums. Perfect for what I need

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I guess I will use mono for this setup. How would Yo Zuri Hyrbid react to these two techniques, jerkbaits and spooks? I will not be using it for frogs since I saw some people mentioned it. I have someting heavier with braids for that.

I use either mono or a copolymer line for both.  The rod you have should be fine for both.

Im using 20lb braid for topwater, and 8lb flouroclear leaders for jerkbaits...

The yo zuri will be perfect for you. Go with 12lb

I use 10-12 lb. P-Line CXX for both.
