Livewell Additives - Which One Works For You?

Featured Replies

There are a few out there.  None more popular than "Please release me".  I just came across an angler who swears by the U2 formula.  Oxygenator U2 formula is the full name I believe.

Are there others?  Which one do you use and why?

Thanks

Please release me is the only one I use because it is the best.

Sure Life Catch and Release is what I've used for years.  Great stuff.

I was using please release me until I put a little too much in and it killed a 4lb'er in a tournament.  I have stopped any additive and instead make sure to run the fill/recirc in my livewell on a regular basis throughout the day to keep fresh water and oxygen in my livewell.  I have lost 0 fish since then even durning tournaments with 90's heat and fish in the livewell all day long.  Additives are pointless if you just keep the water fresh.

I run the pumps all day and don't put anything in the well until weighin, unless I have to. Sometimes there may be an hour wait to get to the scales. Catch and Release and some hydrogen peroxide at the dock if I have to wait. I cannot stress enough, keep checking the livewells during the day. I check every half hour. I've heard adding Sprite or 7UP is good for bleeding fish, but have no experience with those.

Check out their website:  http://www.sure-life.com/

Their website has a lot to be desired There is no information posted about their products

It didn't used to be like that - lots of videos and stuff.  Looks like it's under redesign.

I found a 3rd, Rejuvenade.  Seems like all the sites leave a lot to be desired when it comes to information.  Let's hope this site (this post) helps change that.

Rejuvenade will make your fish go crazy in the livewell.  Not good for holding fish.  Might rescue a dying fish, but makes them too hyper.  You want to calm them down, and protect their slime coat.  Catch and release, or please release me.

Wow ... sounds like an adrenaline shot for fish!  Maybe good in the short term but not long term.

This came to mind as soon as I read your post ...

Agree with you ... sounds contradictory to what you want to do with a caught fish.

I've sen it 1st hand, a couple drops in the holding tank, and the fish go nuts.

I use catch n release. I've heard that "Rejuvenate" actually irritates the gills of the fish causing them to be agitated and appear lively for a short time.

Firm believer in C&R. Tried rejuvinade, with mixed results, more bad than good. Used please release me for a while but catch and release seems to work better for me. It's not like you just sprinkle it in and forget about it. You need to pay attention thru the day and monitor the conditions in your live well. I add frozen ice bottles thru the day as needed and try to maintain a temp about 10* below the surface temp.

I've been using Catch & Release Formula and Please Release Me for well over a decade now, and never had any issues.  Both are terrific products.

Just a reminder - use Catch & Release Formula for "every day" use, and Please Release Me for injured or bleeding fish (not soda pop!).  Use ice and hydrogen peroxide sparingly and only when needed (which is less than most people think).

Here's a few videos on the subject that contain more detailed information and instructions:

Hope that helps!
