Rage toad

Featured Replies

I have some rage toads and I'm rigging them on Gamakatsu EWG Monster NSB 5/0 hooks. Aren't these supposed to float? They recommend a 4/0-6/0 wide gap. I thought I'd hit the middle with the 5/0 but I think I'm way past left field.

Can y'all help?

Thanks,

Scott.

No floating just reel um fast or slow depending on what the fish want oooooo BTW throw it in the nastiest cover ...and hold onnnnnnnnnnnnn

Here is a link that provides you with alot of info on hook rigging etc.

The Rage Toad is designed to swim over the muck and fall slowly into the holes on pause for reaction strikes on fish that won't come to the surface. Be sure to pause for the fish to load up on the strike.

Hope this helps

Anyone got any tips on how to skip them? I can skip most baits on a casting set-up but this os one I just can't get to go. I don't know if it is the head or because you have to use a heavy-wire hook.  :-/

I believe it is the big feet more than the head....but I can skip'em ok on close shots, the longer ones are more of a challenge.

Make sure the belly is bowed downward.  The greater the bend/bow, the easier it will "surf".  You'll have to fiddle around with the bend 'til you find what suits you best.

Thanks for the help. I was under the impression that they would float. Besides, the cotton mouths ran me off last night. They are there for the frogs also. Tonight, the .410 says it's MY pond.

Thanks,

Scott.

I have a problem with them flipping over on there back and swimming in that way. How do you stop that?

Try using the Gamakatsu 5/0 EWG heavy wire hooks.  This will give it a good keel effect and keep it running rightside up.  I bought some at Dicks and they work well.

Today I was fishin my rage toads with a 5/0 1/8 oz keel hook. The bite was nada so I startin practicing my casting, heaven knows I need it..lol Anyway, this was on my spinning rig...so , I sidearm a very low cast, about 2 1/2' off the water, low n behold, I skippeg my toad 3 times, and it went about 4-5 ' just guessin on the distance. Also I tried different retrives, slow, fast and whippin the rod..make for some great action on the toads.

Also rigged my rt lizard up that way too..like it better than a bullet weight t rigged.

I totally lost a tourney last month because my partner wouldn't give the fish a second on the Rage Toad. He wouldn't even reel down and set the hook. He would just lean back trying to set the hook right away. I saw two 3 pound plus fish come off due to a poor hook set. I tried to let him know in a respectful manner he needed to give those fish some time and then give a big hook set. His response was "I can't it will take me in the grass". I asked "Well don't you have braid on?" he confirmed he did so I told him don't worry about the grass then. We ended up one fish short of a limit with over 16lbs and lost by less then two. So if he had landed just one of those fish we would have won. :'(

i hope your partner is not a BR member...

so he has many problems...haha

I often find myself setting too early as well, can't help it! It is ridiculous how they crush this thing too. I got a chance to pond fish today and after an hour i had zero bites. I went to reel my worm in for another pitch and one hit it as it surfaced! So i though hmmm, Rage Tail maybe. Sure enough, i tied the frog on and it was on! They wanted topwater all along.

I'm getting mad. I still haven't had any luck with these.

Scott.

Glenn, great job with the video.

Big O, awesome demonstration.

Great video, especially the explanation about the bowed belly on the frog and keeping the frog upright. It helps. That said, I found it far too easy to flip the frog or have it spiral and roll over and over. Even with the heaviest EWG 5/0 hook I could find the problem still persisted. I solved that problem by using a Gamakatsu 5/0 EWG 58415 shank weighted 1/8 or 1/4 ounce hook. The extra weight keeps the frog upright at the highest retrieve rate, it casts farther, and can be used very successfully under the water. It's very nice to work over a weed bed that may be in 8-10 feet with the weeds about 4 feet down. Just stop reeling and let it it fall into the weeds. Then work it back up...a slow yo-yo, or just yo-yo it across the tops of the weeds. I will never fish a frog again without a shank weighted hook. It really expands its surface performance and its capability beyond just being a top water gurgler.

I bought a bag last year on clearance and never really had any luck with it. this year my lake is over grown with millfoil so after loosing my two spro frogs I put the rage back on and man what a difference! I have gone through 5 bags in the last 4 weeks! I do have the problem with them rolling over but it doesn't seem to matter. once the hook rips out I rig them upside down anyway. great baits I seem to get better hook ups than I do with the spro frogs too, at least until I started bending the hooks out.

The ragetail toad is the only soft plastic toad I fish.  I absolutely love it.  Big-O's advice about the rigging will keep it running right.  If it lands upside down, just pause a second and then continue the retrieve.  It will turn back over and run right.  A keel weighted hook works great and also makes it easier to throw on windy days.

Before I started using the keel weighted hooks, I would put a small insertable weight in the toad's 'belly'.  This had the same effect as the keel weighted hook, it make it heavier and more likely to run right side up from the start.

I might get cursed for saying this...but there's two words I can't leave out when talking about the toad.

jig trailer  :)

I haven't tried the rage toad yet. I am a big fan of the Rage line-up though. I would recommend trying the Stanley Ribbit if you have not done so yet. For me, it has been a can't miss bait.

Caught my rage toad bass last night. I've only tried using them one other occasion, and was fishing heavy milfoil and decided to throw one on since I have a full pack still. He was small, but it was still fun to pull him through the milfoil. Missed two more topwater strikes :) I was too excited from the strike and set too early haha

Also, it was the same spot that my Rage Space Monkey caught me a couple nice bass
