What Is Wrong With My Albright Floro To Braid Connection

Featured Replies

I'am beside myself. I have been wanting to use a fluorocarbon leader for sometime for my peacock bass trips. I finally bought a spool 20# fluorocarbon. I use 15 #@ power pro main line. I doubled over my floro and made my 10 wraps with the braid and back out like I have done a thousand times. Four out of five of my knots failed on hooksets and or cast. What the heck. BTW I use a lot of spit. Any help would be great.

15 pound braid is really thin. It's cutting into your thick Fluoro. 40# braid that I use is around 10 pound mono diameter. I use that with 20# fluoro. You need to match diameter closer. 15# braid I would use no more than 8-10 pound fluoro.

This would be my hypothesis as well. I never use a heavier # test leader than my main line and always try to keep the size/diameter close. A little give or take either way shouldn't be a big deal as it never has been for me, but that's a large gap between 15# braid and 20# fc.

I just checked and 15 pound PP is 4 pound diameter.

^^I use the alberto as well. The only time it failed me was when I did not have the tag end going out the same way it came in. The Albright looks very similar. Could that be your problem as well?

Well, I use 10 lb braid regularly with leaders from 8-15 lbs and rarely have failures.

May I suggest doing a modified Albright where you wrap up 10 times and then back down 5-8 times before finishing the knot. Cinch it down slowly and see how it goes.

If that fails, try a simple uni to uni knot. I use it when I'm in a hurry, or in the mood for a change up from the Albright. Used it with 10lb PP + 10lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid leader when I caught the 6.6 lber in my avatar last Saturday.

When you said it failed, did it break and slipped? I had problem with Albright when I started using braid with leader, but never failed once since I switched to Alberto.

wrap up 20 times.

fluoro and braid is a slippery combo and needs the extra wraps.

my modified Albright slips w/ 10 up and 10 back. but 20 single wraps up never fails.

I think the set up is fine except the f/c leader, never liked my knots using it and never caught any more fish. I've caught hundreds of peacocks on fast moving baits, I don't see any advantage in using f/c over a mono leader.  The most line shy fish I know of are spanish mackerel and kingfish, gave up on f/c leaders for them and do just as well with mono leaders.

Peacocks are great fun on light tackle ,15# braid and 20# mono leader IMO is heavy enough for them.

I was thinking the same thing. I stopped buying fluoro and switched to Yo Zuri.  Stuff is amazing--same sensitivity, strong hook sets, much more forgiving with knot tying and way cheaper!

If one has ever caught a peacock (or just about any saltwater fish) sensitivity is of little or no issue, you get slammed.  In most cases the fish hit hard enough to hook themselves without the need of a hookset, just raise the rod.

When I am using 20 pound braid or less, I find that I have to add additional wraps. It appears like he braid is cutting through the leader material. When using 10 or 15 pound braid, I tend to make 7-10 turns down, then 10 turns up.

May I suggest doing a modified Albright where you wrap up 10 times and then back down 5-8 times before finishing the knot. Cinch it down slowly and see how it goes.

I'd try this^^^^^^^^^^ I don't use the Albright, I use the Omni, sometimes I have to twist it more to stop it from breaking.

I think the braid cuts into the leader and more twist helps preventing it from doing that.

Try going opposite and double the braid and wrap the floro around it with 20 wraps

I did this today and had no issues. Thanks fellas! I do believe the braid was cutting the fluorocarbon leader into.

This right here...dealt with trout and snook all the way up to sharks and tarpon with a 20 wrap albright to flouro

Try doubling your braid.

No point using 15# PP.

No point using 15# PP.

Fits pretty nicely on a 1000 spinning reel.

Yep............I like 10# PP even better on that size reel.

You know it's not the knot.

You've tied enough knots to recognize a good one from a bad one.

It's the Fluorocarbon - You didn't mention the brand; as It does matter.  Some brands are notoriously bad especially for knot strength.

Switch to Maxima Ultragreen premium copolymer monofilament and Stop punishing yourself -

It's a little $$ but not as much as the top shelf fluorocarbon.

The manufacturer claims Ultragreen is virtually invisible to fish because of it's ability to match the color of the surrounding water. Light is absorbed by the line rather than reflected.

I can only attest to it's effectiveness and it has excellent abrasion resistance.

It's a little stiff making it a killer leader but might not be as good a mainline.

The point you might be most interested in is the very good and Predictable knot strength. Tie some knots and test it - see for yourself.  Your mystery break-offs will be a distant memory.

This leader line was recommended to me by Dwight H.  He uses it exclusively.  I made the switch a while back.   After seeing it in action in and around the zebra mussels of Lake Erie and then the Line Shredding trees of Lake Baccarac, I'm a believer.
