Very good read and I love the analogy.  I have noticed that with all my boaters they will not put there lure in the fishes home, I always try to put my lures in the fishes home and I loose allot of lures lol.  My biggest weakness is accuracy I am just not that accurate and time constraints keep me from lots of practice, so for me I only "practice" in tournaments.  I don't know if this is boat educate or not but I always ask first when I see a laydown or structure that I know will hold fish if I can flip/pitch it and 100% of the time the boater says go ahead and 40% of the time there is a fish there.  One of my first tourneys ever boated a 4# doing this, I just knew a big fish was there.

Jt, awesome analogy....  i almost consider the day a failure if i didn't AT LEAST snag a couple lures if not lose one.....

Very nice article, JT.  One never learns how to avoid losing lures in thick cover without pitching into the thick of it and experiencing it.  Having said that, lures will still be lost by the most skilled among us.  All it takes is one big bass to make it all worthwhile.    

 

I look at the outer edge of cover sort of like that front porch on a house. You can roll through your neighborhood and there might be a few people on their porches, but the majority of the people are inside their homes.

I will say this, the more you fish heavy laydowns, you start to see casting points in the tree that have a high likelyhood of holding a bigger fish.  The the crotch of a main "Y" or the crown of a hardwood are good examples.  Also, if it is thick at the surface, it may be clear just underneath and that will always have at least one fish in there.

Yeah I caught the article last week. Liked it very much, nice job JT. 

It is very true with me at least that I tend to pick around the edges because I don't want

to hang up. Being a basser on a budget and fishing with that mindset, I am missing on the big fish.

It is something I am going to work on and just throw the bait in there and see what happens.

There is no single "right" way to do anything, especially catch a Bass. 

Great article! When I snag a crank I will either lose the bait, or pull some of the cover back to the boat.
