Pitching Weeds - Braid With A Fluoro Leader?

Featured Replies

All,

I am reflecting on the tactics which I used last year and how I might improve on them.  One of them is pitching weeds (in and around them).  Last season I used straight fluorocarbon and felt like I missed a few bites because of

1 - stretch

2 - sensitivity

I was wondering if anyone leverages a setup which includes braid with a fluorocarbon leader to do this technique.  Something like 40lb braid with a 20lb leader to use with weights like 1/2oz all the way up to 1oz.

My thought is that the braid would alleviate the stretch and sensitivity issue.  The leader would help with visibility and provide at least a little give.

Thoughts?

Don't worry about visibility.  I use straight braid in #40-#65 in low Vis. Next year I'm switching to HI Vis purely for easier line watching and I'll sharpie the first 2 feet of my line. Frog Turds and I recently discussed this and he catches more bass than KVD. :hahaha-024:  Your bites are going to come usually with in the first 5-15 seconds of pitching so clearly line isn't going to be a factor.  I see no reason to mess with a leader when pitching in heavy grass and cover unless you're in mess of stump and wood too. Besides it's one more factor of possible breakage when tangled up in the gnarly junk.

If i'm pitching a spot where I'm going to have a lot of trouble getting fish out i'll use braid. anything else that I can get by /w fluoro, i use it. i would never use a fluoro leader if ii'm pitching a spot where fish are going to be able to get any sort of leverage.

If you are pitching into weeds the bass can not see your line!

I pitch with my spinning outfit in scattered grass with 20# braid and a 10# floro leader all the time,

but never tried it with as heavy of a rig as you're asking about.

Thats something to think about.

Thanks

Mike

When I am pitching weeds in clear water, I use 30 and 50lb braid with fluro leader 20lb.

I use 15lb braid with 10lb fluro leader on my spinning setup for Wacky or Fat Ika.

I have gotten so the only time I DON'T use a fluorocarbon leader is when frogging, punching mats, or topwaters.
