How Do I Remember What Line Is On My Reel?

Featured Replies

Any suggestions on how to mark or remember what size/kind of line is on your reel? It's hard to remember did I put 6# or 8# on this reel; 12# or 14# etc.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Piece of tape on the bottom of the reel seat.

My method is really simple, b/c reels 12lb yo-zur hybrid, spinning 6lb yz, the one with braid is 60lb power pro.

Piece of tape on the bottom of the reel seat.

X2. Piece of masking tape on the butt of the rod. Write the weight on the tape. Or color coat weight with marker on the butt of the rod. Blue=8lb..red=15..black = 20..etc.

TW sells labels specifically designed for this. Not very expensieve but if you are an organization junky they may be worth it.

You could also create a spreadsheet on your computer or on a piece of paper.

Label maker with laminated labels.  Put the label underneath between grips on split grip or if on a full grip just above the reel underneath.  Easy-Peasy.  I like to use high contrast label colors, works awesome.

I tried the stickers and labels...... they always came off.

and really it you have technique specific rods you can remember by what you have tied on.  or I have been able too and I use 8-25#

I memorize them by putting them in a spreadsheet.

Write it on your hand.

I can usually guess pretty close by biting the line. :)

I use the notes section in my phone but I also have it memorized.

Fishing setups

7'7 mh/mod - 6:3:1 lexa #12 yozuri

7'6 xh/xf - need reel still

7'2 h/f - 8:1:1 tatula #65 pp

7'2 mh/xf - 6:3:1 steez #14 fluoro

7'2 mh/xf - 7:1:1 zillion #55 pp

7'0 m/mod - 6:3:1 lexa #12 yozuri

7'0 m/f spinning - trio 30 #6 yozuri

6'10 mh/mf - 7:1:1 lexa #12 fluoro

6'9 mh/f - 7:3:1 exceler #12 yozuri

this is what I do. Its not something you can just look at but you need to just be able to remember when youre on the water imo. Its type of line, strength, and date it was spooled.

A label of some sort is fine on the rod butt or reel, I don't care for a label on the reel foot, I'd have to remove the reel to look at it.  I'm pretty wired in on what I use, so memory works real good for me.

I write down lb test, brand & date spooled on a little sticker and put it on the side of the reel.  Yeah, sure, it will fall off from time to time, then you just put another one on.  Works for me.

Thats funny - I have dozens of different combo's in my storage racks and I can tell you exactly what line/leader is on each one right now. But I rememeber stuff like that.

I stick a piece of blue masking tape on the bottom side of my baitcasters or the spools of my spinners with the brand, # test, and date with a Sharpie pen.

If your gonna use stickers, stick it on the reel seat and then mount the reel. Only take a second to rake the reel off.

Use the little round price sticlers, you can find them in wal mart for a buck.

I don't do that any more... Kinda flying by memory now

I put it on the reel foot solely for the purpose of having the date it was spooled on it.

I could do the same by memory as well

I have different reel brands for different rod actions. All my Lew's have 15# flouro, all STX have 20# flouro, all Pfluegers have 25# flouro. All braid is 65# etc. easy for even an old timer like me to remember

I use the WHITE first aid, cloth tape. I think it 3/8 or 1/2 in. wide, ang a fine tip sharpy. The tape stays put rain or shine.

I use but 4 different # tests, all braid and usually PP.

Light rods..............................10#

Med rods...............................15#

Mh rods.................................20#

25#,30# and 40# class..........30#

I also use tape but use this sheet I made up as well……..6F43D6B7_zps062a923d.jpg
