It happens to the best of them.  Kudos for Gerald Swindle for video taping it.  This is the first solo-removal video I have seen.

 

Well if you're gonna hook yourself, at least looking like a pro yanking it back out haha wow man that was smooth!  

Good trick for everyone who fishes to know. I've heard some pretty gruesome hook removal stories and thought to myself, "Had they only known the right way to do it...". Maybe this will help to enlighten them.

Ahhh...Luckily (knock on wood), I've never had that happen to me. I did hook a fella in the ear one time though...that story will be for a later time. haha

I noticed the front hook had been removed from the crankbait........that might be an important step......to keep from imbedding the 2nd hook in the back of your hand.

What knot did he use?

I have only been hooked once like that, I just grabbed the pliers and pulled it out... this kind of looked like it wasted a lot of time, especially in a tournament... interesting technique though...

the theory is. with the pressure on the eye. the line in the right location, and the quick jerk. you create a temporary cavity the clears the barb. supposed to not hurt too bad and not rip flesh out.

^^^ Yeah it didnt feel good pulling it out of my hand, but it wasn't terrible either... looks like this method worked pretty well though...

Never been hooked that deep, even with sharp hooks IDK how it could get that deep to the barb going all the way in. My earliest fishing memory was around 6 fishing a creek with older friends and I got my basketball shorts hooked in the man area. They were netted multi layer shorts so luckily it didn't go past the second layer but watch an 8 yr old go at that hook in that area with plyers still haunts my dreams haha.

They probably edited out the big swig of makers mark bourbon he took before the hook extraction took place. 

i also give props to the guys jamming hooks into their skin on purpose to educate us. ouch

I stuck a 1/0 hook on the underside of my arm while fly tying.  I reached over the upturned hook to pickup something and imbedded the hook.  I took a pair of pliers and turned up the hook point and forced it out of my arm.  Took a pair of side cutters and cut off the tip/barb and pulled out the rest of the hook with my fingers.  It came out easy with no barb.

He did it right. It depends how deep it is whether to just remove it by hand. The pain can be slow and more intense by hand too.

I have a Flatfish hook dig into my leg about six inches long it ripped up my leg. My dad was a medic in the army and was with us so he took it out. I was just a kid casting a open Penn reel.

Seen a bunch of hook removal vids on YouTube, and I'd have to say Swindle was by far the most B A. Thanks for posting it was very informative.
